Abram

When he is first mentioned, Abram, with his brothers Nahor and Haran, are listed as the three sons of Terah (Genesis 11:26). At that stage, they signify the three universal kinds of idolatry -- those that are grounded in 1) self-love, 2) the love of the world, and 3) the love of pleasures.

When Abram and Nahor take to themselves wives, Sarah and Milcah (Genesis 11:29), it signifies marriages of evil with falsity in idolatrous worship.

But Abram's journeying symbolizes spiritual journeys. When, in Genesis 13:1, Abram leaves Egypt to go to Canaan, he's changing. In Egypt, he absorbed natural knowledge, and then in heading for Canaan, he is seeking higher, more interior truths. (See Arcana Coelestia 1543). Abram represents different spiritual things, as his story develops.

In Genesis 17:1, Here, Abram signifies the Lord's gentle and kindly bending from idolatrous belief. (Arcana Coelestia 1992 )

In Genesis 14:19, 23, Abram signifies the Lord's rational to be united to His Interior, or Jehovah, by victories in temptations; and so the things of celestial love which He gained by the victories. (Arcana Coelestia 1732)
