That this signifies that this was in the natural where memory-knowledges are, and within the church, is evident from the signification of the “land of Egypt,” as being the natural mind where memory-knowledges are (n. 5276, 5278, 5280, 5288, 5301); from the signification of the “land of Canaan,” as being the church (of which above, see n. 6067); and from the signification of “famine,” as being desolation (as just above, n. 6110). Hence it is evident that by the words “the land of Egypt and the land of Canaan labored by reason of the famine” is signified that there was desolation in the natural where memory-knowledges are, and within the church.
