Numbers 28

Studie

1 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

2 Command the sons of Israel, and say to them, My offering, My bread for My fire··offerings, a restful smell to Me, you shall keep, to offer to Me in its season.

3 And thou shalt say to them, This is the fire··offering which you shall offer to Jehovah: two perfect lambs, sons of a year, for the day, a continual burnt··offering.

4 The one lamb shalt thou make in the morning, and the second lamb shalt thou make between the two··evenings*.

5 and a tenth of an ephah of flour for a gift··offering, mixed with the fourth of a hin of beaten oil.

6 It is a continual burnt··offering, made in Mount Sinai for a restful smell, a fire··offering to Jehovah.

7 And its poured··offering shall be a fourth of a hin for the one lamb; in the holy place shalt thou pour··out a poured··offering of strong··drink to Jehovah.

8 And the second lamb thou shalt make between the evenings; as the gift··offering of the morning, and as its poured··offering, thou shalt make it, a fire··offering, a restful smell to Jehovah.

9 And on the Sabbath day two perfect lambs, sons of a year, and two tenths of flour for a gift··offering, mixed with oil, and its poured··offering;

10 this is the burnt··offering of the Sabbath in its Sabbath, by the continual burnt··offering, and its poured··offering.

11 And in the beginnings of your months you shall offer a burnt··offering to Jehovah: two bullocks, sons of the herd, and one ram, seven perfect lambs, sons of a year;

12 and three tenths of flour for a gift··offering, mixed with oil, for one bullock; and two tenths of flour for a gift··offering, mixed with oil, for one ram;

13 and a tenth, a tenth of flour, mixed with oil for a gift··offering for one lamb, it is a burnt··offering, a restful smell, a fire··offering to Jehovah.

14 And their poured··offerings shall be half a hin of wine to a bullock, and the third part of a hin to a ram, and a fourth part of a hin to a lamb; this is the burnt··offering month by month for the months of the year.

15 And one male goat of the goats for a sin offering to Jehovah shall be made, by the continual burnt··offering, and its poured··offering.

16 And in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month is the Passover of Jehovah.

17 And in the fifteenth day of this month is the festival; seven days shall unleavened bread be eaten.

18 In the first day shall be a holy convocation; you shall not do any work* of service in it;

19 but you shall offer a fire··offering for a burnt··offering to Jehovah: two bullocks, sons of the herd, and one ram, and seven lambs, sons of a year; they shall be to you perfect;

20 and their gift··offering shall be of flour mixed with oil; three tenths you shall make for a bullock, and two tenths for a ram;

21 a tenth, a tenth shalt thou make for one lamb, for the seven lambs;

22 and one male goat for a sin offering, to make··atonement for you.

23 You shall make these offerings, apart from the burnt··offering of the morning, which is for a continual burnt··offering.

24 According··to these things you shall do for the day, for seven days, the bread of the fire··offering, a restful smell to Jehovah; it shall be made on the continual burnt··offering, and its poured··offering.

25 And on the seventh day shall be for you a holy convocation; you shall not do any work of service in it.

26 And in the day of the firstfruits, when you offer a new gift··offering to Jehovah, in your feast of weeks, there shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall not do any work of service in it;

27 but you shall offer the burnt··offering for a restful smell to Jehovah: two bullocks, sons of the herd, one ram, seven lambs, sons of a year;

28 and their gift··offering of flour mixed with oil, three tenths to one bullock, two tenths to one ram,

29 a tenth, a tenth to one lamb, for the seven lambs;

30 And one male goat of the goats, to make··atonement for you.

31 Apart from the continual burnt··offering and its gift··offering, you shall make them; they shall be to you perfect; and their poured··offerings.

Evening

Evening Street, by Jakub Schikaneder

Evening, a time when the light and heat are fading away, represents a state in which a person -- or a community of people -- is turning away from the Lord, with little desire left to be good and little knowledge left regarding what good is. Evening is often a time of judgment.

In Genesis 19:1, the evening signifies the visitation that comes before judgment. (Arcana Coelestia 2318)

In Genesis 30:16, this signifies the good or truth in a state of good, but in the obscurity that is characteristic of the natural. (Arcana Coelestia 3949)

2318. 'The two angels came to Sodom in the evening' means the visitation which takes place prior to judgement. This becomes clear from the statements made by the three men, that is, by Jehovah, in the previous chapter, also from what follows in the present chapter, as well as from the meaning of 'the evening'. In the previous chapter Jehovah said, 'I will go down and I will see whether the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah have done altogether according to the cry which has come to Me; and if not, I will know', verses 20-21. At that point it was shown that those words meant the visitation that takes place prior to judgement. In the present chapter the actual process of visitation is described and after that judgement, as is evident from what follows. That 'evening' means the time when visitation takes place will be seen below. As for what visitation is and the fact that visitation takes place prior to judgement, see 2242. In the previous chapter the subject was the corrupt state of the human race and the Lord's grief and intercession on behalf of those who are immersed in evil and yet with whom some good and truth exist. The present chapter therefore goes on to deal with the salvation of those with whom some good and truth exist, it being these who are represented in this chapter by Lot. At the same time it deals with the destruction of those who are immersed completely in evil and falsity, it being these who are meant here by Sodom and Gomorrah.
