Exodus 40

Studie

1 And Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying,

2 On the first day of the month, in the first month, shalt thou raise··up the Habitation of the Tabernacle of the congregation.

3 And thou shalt set in it the ark of the testimony, and thou shalt shelter the veil over the ark.

4 And thou shalt bring··in the table, and shalt arrange its arrangement; and thou shalt bring··in the lampstand, and shalt cause the flame of its lamps to go··up*.

5 And thou shalt put the altar of gold for incense before the ark of the Testimony, and shalt set the sheltering of the entrance to the Habitation.

6 And thou shalt put the altar of the burnt··offering before the entrance of the Habitation of the Tabernacle of the congregation.

7 And thou shalt put the laver between the Tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and shalt put waters therein.

8 And thou shalt set the court all around, and shalt put the sheltering at the gate of the court.

9 And thou shalt take the oil of anointing, and anoint the Habitation, and all that is in it, and thou shalt sanctify it, and all its vessels; and it shall be holy.

10 And thou shalt anoint the altar of burnt··offering, and all its vessels, and shalt sanctify the altar; and the altar shall be a holy of holies.

11 And thou shalt anoint the laver and its base, and shalt sanctify it.

12 And thou shalt make Aaron and his sons come··near to the entrance of the Tabernacle of the congregation, and shalt bathe them with waters.

13 And thou shall clothe Aaron with the garments of holiness, and thou shall anoint him, and sanctify him, that he may be··a··priest to Me.

14 And thou shalt make his sons to come··near, and shalt clothe them with tunics.

15 And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, and they shall be··priests to Me; and their anointing shall be for a priesthood of an age, to be to them for their generations.

16 And Moses did according··to all that Jehovah commanded him, so he did.

17 And it was in the first month, in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the Habitation was raised··up.

18 And Moses raised··up the Habitation, and put down its bases, and set up its planks, and put in its bars, and raised··up its pillars.

19 And he spread the Tabernacle over the Habitation, and put the covering of the Tabernacle upon it above, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

20 And he took and put the Testimony into the ark, and placed the poles upon the ark, and put the place of atonement upon the ark above.

21 And he brought the ark into the Habitation, and set the veil of the sheltering, and sheltered over the ark of the Testimony; as Jehovah commanded Moses.

22 And he put the table in the Tabernacle of the congregation, upon the thigh of the Habitation northward, outside the veil.

23 And he arranged on it the arrangement of the bread before Jehovah; as Jehovah commanded Moses.

24 And he set the lampstand in the Tabernacle of the congregation, opposite the table, on the thigh of the Habitation toward the south.

25 And he caused the flame of the lamps to go··up* before Jehovah; as Jehovah commanded Moses.

26 And he put the altar of gold in the Tabernacle of the congregation before the veil;

27 and he burnt··for··incense thereon fragrant incense, as Jehovah commanded Moses.

28 And he set the sheltering of the entrance to the Habitation.

29 And he set the altar of the burnt··offering at the entrance of the Habitation of the Tabernacle of the congregation, and he brought··up on it the burnt··offering and the gift··offering; as Jehovah commanded Moses.

30 And he set the laver between the Tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and put waters therein, to bathe.

31 And Moses and Aaron and his sons bathed out of it their hands and their feet.

32 When they came into the Tabernacle of the congregation, and when they came··near to the altar, they bathed; as Jehovah commanded Moses.

33 And he raised··up the court all around the Habitation, and the altar, and put up the sheltering of the gate of the court. And Moses completed the work*,

34 And the cloud covered the Tabernacle of the congregation, and the glory of Jehovah filled the Habitation.

35 And Moses was· not ·able to come into the Tabernacle of the congregation, for the cloud abode on it, and the glory of Jehovah filled the Habitation*.

36 And when the cloud went··up from over the Habitation, the sons of Israel journeyed in all their journeys.

37 And if the cloud went· not ·up, then they journeyed not until the day that it went··up.

38 For the cloud of Jehovah was upon the Habitation by··day, and there was fire in it by night, to the eyes of all the house of Israel, in all their journeys.

Works

'Works,' as in Revelation 16:11, signify falsities of faith, and the resulting evils of life.

In Revelation, 'I know thy works,' is said frequently. This makes it clear that 'works' signify, generally, every aspect of the church.

'Works,' as in Genesis 46:33, denote goods, because they are from the will, and anything from the will is either good or evil, but anything from the understanding, like spoken words, are either truths or falsities.

In Genesis 2:2, the work signifies the celestial man, the highest use of God; or the accomplishment when the spiritual man becomes celestial. (Arcana Coelestia 84, 88)

In Exodus 5:9, work signifies assault for the purpose of subjugation. (Arcana Coelestia 7120)

In Genesis 39:11, it signifies the process when the Lord was conjoining Himself with spiritual good in the natural. (Arcana Coelestia 5004)

In Genesis 47:3; Psalms 8:3; 44:1; 63:12, works concern offices and uses which are done for the neighbor, the country, the church, and the Lord's kingdom.

In Exodus 5:4, work signifies that the people were not to be exempted from things that were hard to bear. (Arcana Coelestia 6073, Arcana Coelestia 7104)

In Revelation 2:2, works signify that the Lord sees man's exterior as well as his interior things. (Apocalypse Revealed 76)

In Revelation 2:6, it signifies that people do not want to claim personal merit. (Apocalypse Revealed 86)

In Revelation 2:19, 23, 26, it signifies all things of charity and faith. (Apocalypse Revealed 138, 141)

In Revelation 9:20, it signifies that they did not shun as sins their own things, which are evils of every kind. (Apocalypse Revealed 457)

76. "'I know your works.'" (2:2) This symbolically means that the Lord sees all a person's inner and outer qualities simultaneously.

Works are often mentioned in the book of Revelation, but few know what works mean. This much is known, that ten people may do works which outwardly appear alike, but which are nevertheless not alike within them all, because the works emanate from different ends and different causes, and it is the end and cause that make works to be either good or evil. For every work is a work of the mind. Consequently whatever the character of the mind, such is the character of the work. If the mind is an embodiment of charity, the work becomes an expression of charity. But if the mind is not an embodiment of charity, the work does not become an expression of charity. Yet the two may appear alike outwardly.

Works are visible in their outward form to people, but in their inward form to angels, and to the Lord they appear as they are from their inmost elements to their outmost ones.

Works in their outward form have an appearance not unlike that of unpeeled fruit, while works in their inward form have an appearance like that of the fruit inside the peel, where one finds countless edible parts, and at the center seeds containing once again countless constituents, which are far too small to be seen by the eyes, indeed which surpass the scope of the human intellect.

Such is the nature of all works, whose inward character the Lord alone sees, and which angels also perceive from the Lord when a person is doing them.

But more on this subject may be seen in Angelic Wisdom Regarding Divine Love and Wisdom, nos. 209-220 and nos. 277-281; and also here below, nos. 141, 641, 868.

It can be seen from this that the declaration, "I know your works," means, symbolically, that the Lord sees all a person's inner and outer qualities simultaneously.
