Exodus 23

Studie

1 Thou shalt not take··up a vain rumor. Put not thy hand with the wicked to be a witness of violence.

2 Thou shalt not follow after many to do evils; and thou shalt not answer upon a dispute to turn··aside* after many to cause others to turn··aside.

3 And thou shalt not honor a poor man in his plea.

4 When thou shalt come··upon thine enemy’s ox, or his donkey, going··astray, returning thou shalt return it to him.

5 When thou shalt see the donkey of him who hates thee couching under his burden, and wouldest desist from removing it for him, removing thou shalt remove it with him.

6 Thou shalt not distort the judgment of thy needy in his plea.

7 Keep thee far from a false word; and the innocent and the just, kill thou not; for I will not justify the wicked.

8 And thou shalt not take a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who have their eyes open, and perverts the words of the just.

9 And a sojourner shalt thou not oppress; and you know the soul of a sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.

10 And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather her increase.

11 And in the seventh thou shalt release it*, and shalt abandon it; and the needy of thy people shall eat; and what remains of them the wild··animal of the field shall eat. So shalt thou do to thy vineyard, and to thine olive trees.

12 Six days thou shalt do thy deeds, and on the seventh day thou shalt cease; so··that thine ox and thine ass may rest; and the son of thy maidservant, and the sojourner, may refresh· their ·soul.

13 And all that I have said to you, you shall keep; and you shall not make··mention of the name of other gods; it shall not be heard upon thy mouth.

14 Three times* thou shalt celebrate to Me in the year.

15 The festival of unleavened things shalt thou keep; seven days thou shalt eat unleavened things, as I commanded thee, at the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou wentest··out from Egypt; and My faces shall not be seen empty.

16 And the festival of the harvest, of the firstfruits of thy works, which thou sowedst in the field; and the festival of ingathering, in the going··out of the year, when thou gatherest in thy works from the field.

17 Three times in the year shall every male of thine be seen before the faces of the Lord Jehovah.

18 Thou shalt not sacrifice the blood of My sacrifice on what is leavened; and the fat of My festival shall not pass··the··night until the morning.

19 The first of the firstfruits of thy ground thou shalt bring··into the house of Jehovah thy God. Thou shalt not cook a kid in the milk of its mother.

20 Behold I send an angel before thee, to guard thee in the way, and to bring thee to the place which I have prepared.

21 Take··heed of his face, and obey his voice, lest thou make· him ·bitter; for he will not bear your transgression; for My name is in his midst.

22 For if hearing thou shalt hear his voice, and do all that I speak, I will be··an··enemy against thine enemies, and I will be··an··adversary against thine adversaries.

23 When My angel shall go before thee, and shall bring thee to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I shall cut· him ·off.

24 Thou shalt not bow··down thyself to their gods, and shalt not serve them, and shalt not do according··to their deeds; for breaking··down thou shalt break· them ·down, and breaking thou shalt break their statues.

25 And you shall serve Jehovah your God, and He shall bless thy bread, and thy waters; and I will remove sickness from among thee.

26 There shall not be one miscarrying, or barren, in thy land; the number of thy days I will··fulfill.

27 I will send My terror before thee, and I will rout all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will give to thee the neck of all thine enemies.

28 And I will send the hornet before thee, and it shall drive··out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee.

29 I will not drive· him ·out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the wild··animal of the field become many against thee.

30 By a··little and a··little I will drive· him ·out from before thee, until thou be··fruitful, and inherit the land.

31 And I will put thy border from the Suph sea*, and even··to the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness even··to the river; for I will give into your hand those who dwell··in the land; and I will drive· them ·out from before thee.

32 Thou shalt not cut a covenant with them, and with their gods.

33 They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against Me, that thou serve their gods; for it will be for a snare to thee.

Apocalypse Explained # 28

28. The Firstborn from the dead, signifies from whom is all good in heaven. This is evident from the signification of the "firstborn," as being, in reference to the Lord, Divine good in heaven, thus all good there. The "firstborn" signifies this, because by generations, in general and in particular, spiritual generations are signified, which are the generations of good and truth or of love and faith; from this it is, that by "father," "mother," "sons," "daughters," "sons-in-law," "daughters-in-law," and "son's sons," are signified goods and truths which generate and are generated in their order (Arcana Coelestia 10490), for in heaven there are no other nativities. This being so, by "firstborn" is not meant the firstborn, but the good of heaven and of the church, because this is in the first place. And since it is the Lord from whom all good in heaven is, He is called the "Firstborn." He is called "the Firstborn from the dead," because, when He arose from the dead, He made His Human to be Divine good by union with the Divine that was in Him from conception.

[2] This is why He is called "the Firstborn from the dead," and says of Himself in David:

I will make Him the Firstborn, high above the kings of the earth (Psalms 89:27).

What is meant by His being "high above the kings of the earth" will be seen in a subsequent article.

(That the Lord, when He departed from the world, made His Human Divine good, see Arcana Coelestia 3194, 3210, 6864, 7499, 8724, 9199, 10076; thus that He came forth from the Father and returned to the Father, n. 3194, 3210; and that after the union, the Divine truth, which is the Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, proceeds from Him, n. 3704, 3712, 3969, 4577, 5704, 7499, 8127, 8241, 9199, 9398, 9407. But this arcanum may be seen more fully explained in the small work on The Doctrine of the New Jerusalem 293-295; and in the passages there cited from the Arcana Coelestia 303-305.)

As the Lord in respect to the Divine Human is called "the Firstborn," for the reason that all good proceeds from Him, so all the firstborn in the Israelitish church were holy to Jehovah; so also the Levites were received in place of all the firstborn in Israel; for by the sons of Levi were represented those of the church who are in the good of charity: therefore also a double portion of inheritance was allotted to the firstborn; all this for the reason that the firstborn signified the good that is from the Lord, and in the highest sense, the Lord Himself in respect to the Divine Human from which is all good. For all things that were commanded in the Israelitish church were representative of Divine things, spiritual and celestial.

[3] That all the firstborn in the Israelitish church were holy to Jehovah appears from Moses, in the following passages:

Sanctify unto Me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the sons of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is Mine (Exodus 13:2).

Thou shalt cause to pass over unto Jehovah all that openeth the womb, and every firstling that cometh of a beast, as many as thou hast, the males shall be Jehovah's (Exodus 13:12).

Thou shalt not delay to offer the firstfruits of thy produce, and the firstfruits of thy wine. The firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto Me. Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen and with thy sheep; seven days it shall be with its dam: on the eighth day thou shalt give it Me. And ye shall be men of holiness unto Me (Exodus 22:29-31).

They were to give also the firstborn of beasts, because these, too, were representative; and because they represented they were also made use of in burnt-offerings and sacrifices.

(What the various beasts in these services represented, see Arcana Coelestia 1823, 3519, 9280, 9980, 10042. Why the Levites were accepted in place of all the firstborn in Israel, see Numbers 3:12, 13, 41, 45; 8:15-20, was, as was said above, because the "sons of Levi" represented, and therefore signified, the good of charity, and "Levi," in the highest sense, signified the Lord as to that good, see Arcana Coelestia 3875, 3877, 4497, 4502, 4503, 10017. A double portion of the inheritance was given to the firstborn, Deuteronomy 21:17, because a "double portion" signified the good of love, Arcana Coelestia 720, 1686, 5194, 8423)

Arcana Coelestia # 9398

9398. 'And they said, All that Jehovah has spoken we will do and hear' means receiving the truth that emanates from the Lord's Divine Human, and obeying it with heart and soul. This is clear from the meaning of 'all that Jehovah has spoken' as truth emanating from the Lord's Divine Human, dealt with below; from the meaning of 'doing' as obeying with the will, thus with the heart, dealt with in 9311, 9385; and from the meaning of 'hearing' as obeying with the understanding, thus with the soul, dealt with in 7216, 8361, 9311. Obeying with the heart describes obeying with the will, thus with affection and love, and obeying with the soul describes obeying with the understanding, thus in belief; for 'the heart' means will and love, 3883-3896, 7542, 8910, 9050, 9300, and 'the soul' means understanding and belief, 2930, 9050, 9281. All this explains why the words 'we will do and hear' are used. The reason why 'all that Jehovah has spoken' means truth emanating from the Lord's Divine Human is that all truth emanates from there. The fact that Divine Truth emanates not from the Divine Himself but from the Divine Human is made perfectly clear in John,

Nobody has ever seen God; the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father, He has made Him known. John 1:18.

This is the reason why the Lord is called 'the Word', John 1:1-3, which is Divine Truth, and why it is said that 'the Word was made flesh', that is, was made Man, John 1:14, to the end that the Divine Himself in human form might in actuality teach God's truth. Regarding the Lord, that He is the Divine Himself in human form, see 9315. From all this it is evident that 'all that Jehovah has spoken' means truth emanating from the Lord's Divine Human.
