¹ イサクは年老い、目がかすんで見えなくなった時、長子エサウを呼んで言った、「子よ」。彼は答えて言った、「ここにおります」。

² イサクは言った。「わたしは年老いて、いつ死ぬかも知れない。

³ それであなたの武器、弓矢をもって野に出かけ、わたしのために、しかの肉をとってきて、

⁴ わたしの好きなおいしい食べ物を作り、持ってきて食べさせよ。わたしは死ぬ前にあなたを祝福しよう」。

⁵ イサクがその子エサウに語るのをリベカは聞いていた。やがてエサウが、しかの肉を獲ようと野に出かけたとき、

⁶ リベカはその子ヤコブに言った、「わたしは聞いていましたが、父は兄エサウに、

⁷ 『わたしのために、しかの肉をとってきて、おいしい食べ物を作り、わたしに食べさせよ。わたしは死ぬ前に、主の前であなたを祝福しよう』と言いました。

⁸ それで、子よ、わたしの言葉にしたがい、わたしの言うとおりにしなさい。

⁹ 群れの所へ行って、そこからやぎの子の良いのを二頭わたしの所に取ってきなさい。わたしはそれで父のために、父の好きなおいしい食べ物を作りましょう。

¹⁰ あなたはそれを持って行って父に食べさせなさい。父は死ぬ前にあなたを祝福するでしょう」。

¹¹ ヤコブは母リベカに言った、「兄エサウは毛深い人ですが、わたしはなめらかです。

¹² おそらく父はわたしにさわってみるでしょう。そうすればわたしは父を欺く者と思われ、祝福を受けず、かえってのろいを受けるでしょう」。

¹³ 母は彼に言った、「子よ、あなたがうけるのろいはわたしが受けます。ただ、わたしの言葉に従い、行って取ってきなさい」。

¹⁴ そこで彼は行ってやぎの子を取り、母の所に持ってきたので、母は父の好きなおいしい食べ物を作った。

¹⁵ リベカは家にあった長子エサウの晴着を取って、弟ヤコブに着せ、

¹⁶ また子やぎの皮を手と首のなめらかな所とにつけさせ、

¹⁷ 彼女が作ったおいしい食べ物とパンとをその子ヤコブの手にわたした。

¹⁸ そこでヤコブは父の所へ行って言った、「父よ」。すると父は言った、「わたしはここにいる。子よ、あなたはだれか」。

¹⁹ ヤコブは父に言った、「長子エサウです。あなたがわたしに言われたとおりにいたしました。どうぞ起きて、すわってわたしのしかの肉を食べ、あなたみずからわたしを祝福してください」。

²⁰ イサクはその子に言った、「子よ、どうしてあなたはこんなに早く手に入れたのか」。彼は言った、「あなたの神、主がわたしにしあわせを授けられたからです」。

²¹ イサクはヤコブに言った、「子よ、近寄りなさい。わたしは、さわってみて、あなたが確かにわが子エサウであるかどうかをみよう」。

²² ヤコブが、父イサクに近寄ったので、イサクは彼にさわってみて言った、「声はヤコブの声だが、手はエサウの手だ」。

²³ ヤコブの手が兄エサウの手のように毛深かったため、イサクはヤコブを見わけることができなかったので、彼を祝福した。

²⁴ イサクは言った、「あなたは確かにわが子エサウですか」。彼は言った、「そうです」。

²⁵ イサクは言った、「わたしの所へ持ってきなさい。わが子のしかの肉を食べて、わたしみずから、あなたを祝福しよう」。ヤコブがそれを彼の所に持ってきたので、彼は食べた。またぶどう酒を持ってきたので、彼は飲んだ。

²⁶ そして父イサクは彼に言った、「子よ、さあ、近寄ってわたしに口づけしなさい」。

²⁷ 彼が近寄って口づけした時、イサクはその着物のかおりをかぎ、彼を祝福して言った、「ああ、わが子のかおりは、主が祝福された野のかおりのようだ。

²⁸ どうか神が、天の露と、地の肥えたところと、多くの穀物と、新しいぶどう酒とをあなたに賜わるように。

²⁹ もろもろの民はあなたに仕え、もろもろの国はあなたに身をかがめる。あなたは兄弟たちの主となり、あなたの母の子らは、あなたに身をかがめるであろう。あなたをのろう者はのろわれ、あなたを祝福する者は祝福される」。

³⁰ イサクがヤコブを祝福し終って、ヤコブが父イサクの前から出て行くとすぐ、兄エサウが狩から帰ってきた。

³¹ 彼もまたおいしい食べ物を作って、父の所に持ってきて、言った、「父よ、起きてあなたの子のしかの肉を食べ、あなたみずから、わたしを祝福してください」。

³² 父イサクは彼に言った、「あなたは、だれか」。彼は言った、「わたしはあなたの子、長子エサウです」。

³³ イサクは激しくふるえて言った、「それでは、あのしかの肉を取って、わたしに持ってきた者はだれか。わたしはあなたが来る前に、みんな食べて彼を祝福した。ゆえに彼が祝福を得るであろう」。

³⁴ エサウは父の言葉を聞いた時、大声をあげ、激しく叫んで、父に言った、「父よ、わたしを、わたしをも祝福してください」。

³⁵ イサクは言った、「あなたの弟が偽ってやってきて、あなたの祝福を奪ってしまった」。

³⁶ エサウは言った、「よくもヤコブと名づけたものだ。彼は二度までもわたしをおしのけた。さきには、わたしの長子の特権を奪い、こんどはわたしの祝福を奪った」。また言った、「あなたはわたしのために祝福を残しておかれませんでしたか」。

³⁷ イサクは答えてエサウに言った、「わたしは彼をあなたの主人とし、兄弟たちを皆しもべとして彼に与え、また穀物とぶどう酒を彼に授けた。わが子よ、今となっては、あなたのために何ができようか」。

³⁸ エサウは父に言った、「父よ、あなたの祝福はただ一つだけですか。父よ、わたしを、わたしをも祝福してください」。エサウは声をあげて泣いた。

³⁹ 父イサクは答えて彼に言った、「あなたのすみかは地の肥えた所から離れ、また上なる天の露から離れるであろう。

⁴⁰ あなたはつるぎをもって世を渡り、あなたの弟に仕えるであろう。しかし、あなたが勇み立つ時、首から、そのくびきを振り落すであろう」。

⁴¹ こうしてエサウは父がヤコブに与えた祝福のゆえにヤコブを憎んだ。エサウは心の内で言った、「父の喪の日も遠くはないであろう。その時、弟ヤコブを殺そう」。

⁴² しかしリベカは長子エサウのこの言葉を人づてに聞いたので、人をやり、弟ヤコブを呼んで言った、「兄エサウはあなたを殺そうと考えて、みずから慰めています。

⁴³ 子よ、今わたしの言葉に従って、すぐハランにいるわたしの兄ラバンのもとにのがれ、

⁴⁴ あなたの兄の怒りが解けるまで、しばらく彼の所にいなさい。

⁴⁵ 兄の憤りが解けて、あなたのした事を兄が忘れるようになったならば、わたしは人をやって、あなたをそこから迎えましょう。どうして、わたしは一日のうちにあなたがたふたりを失ってよいでしょうか」。

⁴⁶ リベカはイサクに言った、「わたしはヘテびとの娘どものことで、生きているのがいやになりました。もしヤコブがこの地の、あの娘どものようなヘテびとの娘を妻にめとるなら、わたしは生きていて、何になりましょう」。

¹ There was a famine in the land, besides the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Philistines, to Gerar.

² Yahweh appeared to him, and said, "Don't go down into Egypt. Live in the land I will tell you about.

³ Live in this land, and I will be with you, and will bless you. For to you, and to your seed, I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

⁴ I will multiply your seed as the stars of the sky, and will give to your seed all these lands. In your seed will all the nations of the earth be blessed,

⁵ because Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my requirements, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws."

⁶ Isaac lived in Gerar.

⁷ The men of the place asked him about his wife. He said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say, "My wife," lest, he thought, "the men of the place might kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to look at."

⁸ It happened, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was caressing Rebekah, his wife.

⁹ Abimelech called Isaac, and said, "Behold, surely she is your wife. Why did you say, 'She is my sister?'" Isaac said to him, "Because I said, 'Lest I die because of her.'"

¹⁰ Abimelech said, "What is this you have done to us? One of the people might easily have lain with your wife, and you would have brought guilt on us!"

¹¹ Abimelech commanded all the people, saying, "He who touches this man or his wife will surely be put to death."

¹² Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year one hundred times what he planted. Yahweh blessed him.

¹³ The man grew great, and grew more and more until he became very great.

¹⁴ He had possessions of flocks, possessions of herds, and a great household. The Philistines envied him.

¹⁵ Now all the wells which his father's servants had dug in the days of Abraham his father, the Philistines had stopped, and filled with earth.

¹⁶ Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go from us, for you are much mightier than we."

¹⁷ Isaac departed from there, encamped in the valley of Gerar, and lived there.

¹⁸ Isaac dug again the wells of water, which they had dug in the days of Abraham his father. For the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham. He called their names after the names by which his father had called them.

¹⁹ Isaac's servants dug in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.

²⁰ The herdsmen of Gerar argued with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, "The water is ours." He called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him.

²¹ They dug another well, and they argued over that, also. He called its name Sitnah.

²² He left that place, and dug another well. They didn't argue over that one. He called it Rehoboth. He said, "For now Yahweh has made room for us, and we will be fruitful in the land."

²³ He went up from there to Beersheba.

²⁴ Yahweh appeared to him the same night, and said, "I am the God of Abraham your father. Don't be afraid, for I am with you, and will bless you, and multiply your seed for my servant Abraham's sake."

²⁵ He built an altar there, and called on the name of Yahweh, and pitched his tent there. There Isaac's servants dug a well.

²⁶ Then Abimelech went to him from Gerar, and Ahuzzath his friend, and Phicol the captain of his army.

²⁷ Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me, since you hate me, and have sent me away from you?"

²⁸ They said, "We saw plainly that Yahweh was with you. We said, 'Let there now be an oath between us, even between us and you, and let us make a covenant with you,

²⁹ that you will do us no harm, as we have not touched you, and as we have done to you nothing but good, and have sent you away in peace.' You are now the blessed of Yahweh."

³⁰ He made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

³¹ They rose up some time in the morning, and swore one to another. Isaac sent them away, and they departed from him in peace.

³² It happened the same day, that Isaac's servants came, and told him concerning the well which they had dug, and said to him, "We have found water."

³³ He called it Shibah. Therefore the name of the city is Beersheba to this day.

³⁴ When Esau was forty years old, he took as wife Judith, the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath, the daughter of Elon the Hittite.

³⁵ They grieved Isaac's and Rebekah's spirits.
