Exploring the Meaning of Amos 3

Napsal(a) Rev. Martin Pennington and Rev. George McCurdy

A church cannot serve two masters. It cannot peacefully coexist with truths and falsities. To want to live with both and to seek a compromise will cause the church to be laid to waste. The church will perish, and the goods and truths of the Word will be taken away from it.

9 Whether is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and take up thy bed, and walk?

   Studovat vnitřní smysl

Exploring the Meaning of Mark 2

Napsal(a) Joe David

In this chapter, famous scenes play out in rapid succession as Jesus returns to Capernaum, and heals and teaches:

- Jesus heals a man who had palsy, and could not walk - "Arise, take up your bed, and walk."

- Jesus eats a meal with publicans and sinners, and fends off criticism: "They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick".

- Jesus makes it clear that he is charting a new course:
-- "And no man putteth new wine into old wineskins".
-- "The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath".

- Jesus calls himself the Son of man, and Lord of the sabbath.

For us, the events in this chapter symbolize our need to allow the Lord to remove our palsy - our evil loves and false ideas, so that we can "walk", or start to do good.

Even though we have sinned, and are still sinners, the Lord will eat with us - he will not reject us if we seek him.

He will fill us with good loves and true ideas, if we invite him to. They can't fit, though, in a merely external practice of ritual; the new loves and new truths being taught and practiced by Jesus Christ needed to be conjoined in a new religion.

---

Also, here's an older (1800s), detailed exposition by Rev. John Clowes:

Verses 1, 2. The LORD, as to His Humanity, again consults the doctrine of Truth and Good, and thence instructs in the interiors of the Word.

Verses 3, 4. So that they in whom truth and good are not fully conjoined, and who are yet in integrity of life, seek by that doctrine to attain the conjunction of those principles, which yet cannot be effected but by the removal of evil and false persuasions, and an elevation to the interior things of love and charity.

Verse 5. Since the removal of what is evil and false is one and the same thing with the conjunction of what is good and true.

Verses 6, 7. But the perverse church is not willing to allow that the LORD, in His Humanity, has any power to remove what is evil and false, insomuch as this power belongs only to Divinity.

Verses 6-13. Therefore they are instructed that the LORD'S Humanity is not like the humanity of other men, but is a DIVINE HUMANITY, since it has the power both of conjoining what is good and true in the human mind, and of removing what is evil and false, and thus of elevating the doctrine of Truth to conjunction with the life of Truth.

Verses 14, 15. That rational good, being required to obey the LORD, obeys, and that thus the affections and thoughts which had been perverted by evils and falsities, are restored to communication with goods and truths from the LORD.

Verses 16, 17. Which communication is offensive to such as are in hypocritical good, but this without cause, since the end of the LORD'S coming in the flesh, was not to save the celestial, or those who were in orderly love, but the spiritual, or those who were in disorderly love, with whom there nevertheless remained the affection of truth.

Verses 18-21. And who, by receiving the internal truths of the church in that affection, were blessed and happy so long as good was conjoined to their truths, but unblessed and unhappy when they are in truths without good.

Verses 21, 22. That these things were unknown in the Jewish church, which was a church representative of spiritual things, and therefore the truths of that church do not accord with the truths of the Christian church, which are spiritual truths themselves.

Verse 23. The LORD teaches by representatives, that when spiritual good and truth are conjoined, which conjunction is the true Sabbath, then the church may enter into the appropriation and enjoyment of all natural goods and truths.

Verse 24. Which liberty is condemned as contrary to order by those who are in the mere representative church, and thus only in the literal sense of the Word Sabbath.

Verse 25-28. But the LORD teaches that it is agreeable to the internal sense of the Word Sabbath, which sense teaches that by the Sabbath is meant the union of the LORD'S Divinity and Humanity, also His conjunction with heaven and the church, and lastly, every conjunction of heavenly good and truth, and thus that the LORD Himself is the Sabbath in the supreme sense.
