1 Dite a’ vostri fratelli: Ammi; ed alle vostre sorelle: Ruhama.

2 Contendete con la madre vostra, contendete, dicendole ch’ella non è più mia moglie, e che io non sono più suo marito; e che tolga le sue fornicazioni dalla sua faccia, e i suoi adulterii d’infra le sue mammelle.

3 Che talora io non la spogli tutta nuda, e non la metta nello stato ch’era nel giorno che nacque; e non la renda simile ad un deserto, e non la riduca ad essere come una terra arida, e non la faccia morir di sete.

4 E non abbia pietà de’ suoi figliuoli; perciocchè son figliuoli di fornicazione.

5 Conciossiachè la madre loro abbia fornicato; quella che li ha partoriti è stata svergognata; perciocchè ha detto: Io andrò dietro a’ miei amanti, che mi dànno il mio pane, e la mia acqua, la mia lane, e il mio lino, il mio olio, e le mie bevande.

6 Perciò, ecco, io assieperò la sua via di spine, e le farò una chiusura attorno, ed ella non ritroverà i suoi sentieri.

7 Ed andrà dietro a’ suoi amanti, ma non li aggiungerà; e li ricercherà, ma non li troverà; laonde dirà: Io andrò, e ritornerò al mio primiero marito; perciocchè allora io stava meglio che al presente.

8 Or ella non ha riconosciuto che io le avea dato il frumento, e il mosto, e l’olio, e che io le avea accresciuto l’argento, e l’oro, il quale essi hanno impiegato intorno a Baal.

9 Perciò, io ripiglierò il mio frumento nel suo tempo, e il mio mosto nella sua stagione; e riscoterò la mia lana, e il mio lino, ch’erano per coprir le sue vergogne.

10 Ed ora io scoprirò le sue vergogne, alla vista de’ suoi amanti; e niuno la riscoterà di man mia.

11 E farò venir meno tutte le sue letizie, le sue feste, le sue calendi, e i suoi sabati, e tutte le sue solennità.

12 E deserterò le sue viti, e i suoi fichi, dei quali ella diceva: Queste cose sono il mio premio, che i miei amanti mi hanno donato; ed io li ridurrò in bosco, e le fiere della campagna li mangeranno.

13 E farò punizione sopra lei de’ giorni dei Baali, ne’ quali ella ha fatti loro profumi, e si è adorna de’ suoi pendenti, e monili, ed è andata dietro a’ suoi amanti, e mi ha dimenticato, dice il Signore.

14 Perciò, ecco, io l’attrarrò, e la farò camminare per lo deserto, e la racconsolerò;

15 e le darò le sue vigne, da quel luogo; e la valle di Acor, per entrata di speranza; ed ella canterà quivi, come ai dì della sua fanciullezza, e come quando salì fuor del paese di Egitto.

16 E in quel giorno avverrà, dice il Signore, che tu mi chiamerai: Marito mio; e non mi chiamerai più: Baal mio.

17 Ed io torrò via dalla sua bocca i Baali, e quelli non saranno più ricordati per li nomi loro.

18 E in quel tempo farò che avran patto con le fiere della campagna, e con gli uccelli del cielo, e co’ rettili della terra; e romperò archi, e spade, e strumenti di guerra, e farò che verranno meno nel paese; e li farò giacere in sicurtà.

19 Ed io ti sposerò in eterno; e ti sposerò in giustizia, e in giudicio, e in benignità, e in compassioni.

20 Anzi ti sposerò in verità; e tu conoscerai il Signore.

21 Ed avverrà in quel giorno, che io risponderò, dice il Signore, risponderò al cielo, ed esso risponderà alla terra.

22 E la terra risponderà al frumento, ed al mosto, ed all’olio; e queste cose risponderanno ad Izreel.

23 Ed io me la seminerò nella terra, ed avrò pietà di Lo-ruhama; e dirò a Lo-ammi: Tu sei mio popolo; ed egli mi dirà: Dio mio.

Diodati’s first Italian Bible edition was printed in 1607, and his second in 1641. He died in 1649. Throughout the 1800s two editions of Diodati’s text were printed by the British Foreign Bible Society. This is the more recent 1894 edition, translated by Claudiana.

Visitation

  

The final period of the Church in general and of the individual in particular is called visitation in the Word. It occurs prior to judgement, so that visitation is nothing else than an investigation into what such are like, that is, into the nature of the Church in general or of the individual in particular." (Arcana Coelestia 2242)

"The words in particular and in general are used because there is 'a day of visitation' for each person in particular when he enters the next life, as happens when he dies. There is also such a day for the Church in general when it comes to an end. At that time people undergo examination of their characters and separation from one another. Those ruled by evils are cast down to hell and those governed by forms of good are raised to heaven. This does not take place on earth however, but in the next life." (Arcana Coelestia 10509)

'Visitation' is mentioned throughout in the Word and signifies either vastation in reference to the church and to individuals, or deliverance, so exploration of quality. (See Arcana Coelestia 6588).

2242. That 'I will go down now, and I will see' means visitation becomes clear from the meaning of 'going down to see' as judgement, dealt with in Volume One, in 1311, and consequently as visitation. The final period of the Church in general and of the individual in particular is called visitation in the Word. It occurs prior to judgement, so that visitation is nothing else than an investigation into what such are like, that is, into the nature of the Church in general or of the individual in particular. Such investigation is expressed in the sense of the letter as Jehovah coming down and seeing.

[2] From this the nature of the sense of the letter is made clear, for Jehovah does not go down; indeed one cannot speak of the Lord going down because He always dwells in highest things. Nor does Jehovah look and see whether a thing is so; for one cannot speak of the Lord looking to see whether a thing is so because every single thing is known to Him from eternity. Yet the sense of the letter speaks of Jehovah going down to see because to man that is what He does appear to do. For man dwells among lowest things and when anything presents itself there he does not think about, nor does he even know, what the situation is with higher things and so does not know about how these flow in. He has no knowledge of these things because his thought does not extend beyond what is immediately about him, and therefore he cannot perceive what the Lord does as anything other than some such going down to see; and that perception is even more limited when he imagines that no one knows what he himself is thinking. Besides this, he has no other idea than that an actual coming down from on high is meant, and when said of God, from the highest. But it is not in fact a coming down from the highest but from the inmost.

[3] From this one may see what the sense of the letter is like, namely that it is shaped according to appearances, and that if it were not, nobody would understand and acknowledge the Word, nor thus accept it. But angels are not limited by appearances in the way that man is, and therefore since the Word as to the letter is for man, it is as to the internal sense for angels, and also for those men who in the Lord's Divine mercy have been allowed during their lifetime in the world to be as the angels.

[4] Visitation is mentioned in various places in the Word, where it either means the vastation of the Church or of the individual, or else deliverance, and thus the investigation into the nature of persons or things. It stands for vastation in Isaiah,

What will you do on the day of visitation? It will come from afar. To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your glory? Isaiah 10:3.

In the same prophet,

The stars of the heavens and their constellations will not give their light. The sun will be darkened in its going out, and the moon will not shed its light. And I will visit the world for evil, and the wicked for their iniquity. Isaiah 13:10-11.

'The stars and the constellations which will not give their light, and the sun which will be darkened, and the moon which will not shed its light' means that no love and no charity will exist, see 2120. And since this is vastation it is 'the day of visitation'.

[5] In Jeremiah,

They will fall among those who fall, and in the time of their visitation they will stumble. Jeremiah 8:12.

This stands for the time when they have been vastated, that is, when no charity and faith exist. In Ezekiel,

The visitations of the city have drawn near, and each man has his weapon of destruction in his hand. Ezekiel 9:1.

This too is a reference to vastation; consequently 'each man has a weapon of destruction'. In Hosea,

The days of visitation have come, the days of recompense have come. Hosea 9:7.

Here the meaning is similar. In Micah,

The day of your watchmen, your visitation, has come; now will be their confusion. Micah 7:4.

Here also it stands for charity that has been laid waste. In Moses, On the day of My visiting, I will visit them with their sin. Exodus 32:34.

This refers to the people in the wilderness after they had made themselves the golden calf. That visitation also means deliverance is evident from the following places, Exodus 3:16; 4:31; Jeremiah 27:22; 29:10; Luke 1:68, 78; 19:41-42.
