1 וְלֹא־יָכֹל יֹוסֵף לְהִתְאַפֵּק לְכֹל הַנִּצָּבִים עָלָיו וַיִּקְרָא הֹוצִיאוּ כָל־אִישׁ מֵעָלָי וְלֹא־עָמַד אִישׁ אִתֹּו בְּהִתְוַדַּע יֹוסֵף אֶל־אֶחָיו׃

2 וַיִּתֵּן אֶת־קֹלֹו בִּבְכִי וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ מִצְרַיִם וַיִּשְׁמַע בֵּית פַּרְעֹה׃

3 וַיֹּאמֶר יֹוסֵף אֶל־אֶחָיו אֲנִי יֹוסֵף הַעֹוד אָבִי חָי וְלֹא־יָכְלוּ אֶחָיו לַעֲנֹות אֹתֹו כִּי נִבְהֲלוּ מִפָּנָיו׃

4 וַיֹּאמֶר יֹוסֵף אֶל־אֶחָיו גְּשׁוּ־נָא אֵלַי וַיִּגָּשׁוּ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲנִי יֹוסֵף אֲחִיכֶם אֲשֶׁר־מְכַרְתֶּם אֹתִי מִצְרָיְמָה׃

5 וְעַתָּה אַל־תֵּעָצְבוּ וְאַל־יִחַר בְּעֵינֵיכֶם כִּי־מְכַרְתֶּם אֹתִי הֵנָּה כִּי לְמִחְיָה שְׁלָחַנִי אֱלֹהִים לִפְנֵיכֶם׃

6 כִּי־זֶה שְׁנָתַיִם הָרָעָב בְּקֶרֶב הָאָרֶץ וְעֹוד חָמֵשׁ שָׁנִים אֲשֶׁר אֵין־חָרִישׁ וְקָצִּיר׃

7 וַיִּשְׁלָחֵנִי אֱלֹהִים לִפְנֵיכֶם לָשׂוּם לָכֶם שְׁאֵרִית בָּאָרֶץ וּלְהַחֲיֹות לָכֶם לִפְלֵיטָה גְּדֹלָה׃

8 וְעַתָּה לֹא־אַתֶּם שְׁלַחְתֶּם אֹתִי הֵנָּה כִּי הָאֱלֹהִים וַיְשִׂימֵנִי לְאָב לְפַרְעֹה וּלְאָדֹון לְכָל־בֵּיתֹו וּמֹשֵׁל בְּכָל־אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם׃

9 מַהֲרוּ וַעֲלוּ אֶל־אָבִי וַאֲמַרְתֶּם אֵלָיו כֹּה אָמַר בִּנְךָ יֹוסֵף שָׂמַנִי אֱלֹהִים לְאָדֹון לְכָל־מִצְרָיִם רְדָה אֵלַי אַל־תַּעֲמֹד׃

10 וְיָשַׁבְתָּ בְאֶרֶץ־גֹּשֶׁן וְהָיִיתָ קָרֹוב אֵלַי אַתָּה וּבָנֶיךָ וּבְנֵי בָנֶיךָ וְצֹאנְךָ וּבְקָרְךָ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־לָךְ׃

11 וְכִלְכַּלְתִּי אֹתְךָ שָׁם כִּי־עֹוד חָמֵשׁ שָׁנִים רָעָב פֶּן־תִּוָּרֵשׁ אַתָּה וּבֵיתְךָ וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־לָךְ׃

12 וְהִנֵּה עֵינֵיכֶם רֹאֹות וְעֵינֵי אָחִי בִנְיָמִין כִּי־פִי הַמְדַבֵּר אֲלֵיכֶם׃

13 וְהִגַּדְתֶּם לְאָבִי אֶת־כָּל־כְּבֹודִי בְּמִצְרַיִם וְאֵת כָּל־אֲשֶׁר רְאִיתֶם וּמִהַרְתֶּם וְהֹורַדְתֶּם אֶת־אָבִי הֵנָּה׃

14 וַיִּפֹּל עַל־צַוְּארֵי בִנְיָמִן־אָחִיו וַיֵּבְךְּ וּבִנְיָמִן בָּכָה עַל־צַוָּארָיו׃

15 וַיְנַשֵּׁק לְכָל־אֶחָיו וַיֵּבְךְּ עֲלֵיהֶם וְאַחֲרֵי כֵן דִּבְּרוּ אֶחָיו אִתֹּו׃

16 וְהַקֹּל נִשְׁמַע בֵּית פַּרְעֹה לֵאמֹר בָּאוּ אֲחֵי יֹוסֵף וַיִּיטַב בְּעֵינֵי פַרְעֹה וּבְעֵינֵי עֲבָדָיו׃

17 וַיֹּאמֶר פַּרְעֹה אֶל־יֹוסֵף אֱמֹר אֶל־אַחֶיךָ זֹאת עֲשׂוּ טַעֲנוּ אֶת־בְּעִירְכֶם וּלְכוּ־בֹאוּ אַרְצָה כְּנָעַן׃

18 וּקְחוּ אֶת־אֲבִיכֶם וְאֶת־בָּתֵּיכֶם וּבֹאוּ אֵלָי וְאֶתְּנָה לָכֶם אֶת־טוּב אֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם וְאִכְלוּ אֶת־חֵלֶב הָאָרֶץ׃

19 וְאַתָּה צֻוֵּיתָה זֹאת עֲשׂוּ קְחוּ־לָכֶם מֵאֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם עֲגָלֹות לְטַפְּכֶם וְלִנְשֵׁיכֶם וּנְשָׂאתֶם אֶת־אֲבִיכֶם וּבָאתֶם׃

20 וְעֵינְכֶם אַל־תָּחֹס עַל־כְּלֵיכֶם כִּי־טוּב כָּל־אֶרֶץ מִצְרַיִם לָכֶם הוּא׃

21 וַיַּעֲשׂוּ־כֵן בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיִּתֵּן לָהֶם יֹוסֵף עֲגָלֹות עַל־פִּי פַרְעֹה וַיִּתֵּן לָהֶם צֵדָה לַדָּרֶךְ׃

22 לְכֻלָּם נָתַן לָאִישׁ חֲלִפֹות שְׂמָלֹת וּלְבִנְיָמִן נָתַן שְׁלֹשׁ מֵאֹות כֶּסֶף וְחָמֵשׁ חֲלִפֹת שְׂמָלֹת׃

23 וּלְאָבִיו שָׁלַח כְּזֹאת עֲשָׂרָה חֲמֹרִים נֹשְׂאִים מִטּוּב מִצְרָיִם וְעֶשֶׂר אֲתֹנֹת נֹשְׂאֹת בָּר וָלֶחֶם וּמָזֹון לְאָבִיו לַדָּרֶךְ׃

24 וַיְשַׁלַּח אֶת־אֶחָיו וַיֵּלֵכוּ וַיֹּאמֶר אֲלֵהֶם אַל־תִּרְגְּזוּ בַּדָּרֶךְ׃

25 וַיַּעֲלוּ מִמִּצְרָיִם וַיָּבֹאוּ אֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן אֶל־יַעֲקֹב אֲבִיהֶם׃

26 וַיַּגִּדוּ לֹו לֵאמֹר עֹוד* יֹוסֵף חַי וְכִי־הוּא מֹשֵׁל בְּכָל־אֶרֶץ מִצְרָיִם וַיָּפָג לִבֹּו כִּי לֹא־הֶאֱמִין לָהֶם׃

27 וַיְדַבְּרוּ אֵלָיו אֵת כָּל־דִּבְרֵי יֹוסֵף אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אֲלֵהֶם וַיַּרְא אֶת־הָעֲגָלֹות אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַח יֹוסֵף לָשֵׂאת אֹתֹו וַתְּחִי רוּחַ יַעֲקֹב אֲבִיהֶם׃

28 וַיֹּאמֶר יִשְׂרָאֵל רַב עֹוד־יֹוסֵף בְּנִי חָי אֵלְכָה וְאֶרְאֶנּוּ בְּטֶרֶם אָמוּת׃

5929. 'And he kissed all his brothers' means a linking together through grace. This is clear from the meaning of 'kissing' as a joining together through affection, dealt with in 3573, 3574, 4753, in this case a linking together through grace because the truths of the Church within the natural, represented by 'the sons of Jacob', are more remote from internal good, which is 'Joseph'. And although truths that are more remote are, it is true, joined through the intermediary to internal good, yet for a long time they retain features such as are not in agreement with internal good. This is why 'kissing his brothers' means a linking together through grace.

[2] The expression 'through grace' is used, and not 'through mercy', because truths that are more remote and not in full agreement are not equipped with the kind of humility that enables people to plead for mercy. Indeed they are unable in their hearts even to use the word mercy, only the word grace. The reason for this is that the discordant features that cling to those truths arise from self-love, and one who loves only himself cannot at heart possibly humble himself. Rather, he exalts himself, for in every single thing he regards only himself and has little concern for anything outside himself.

3574. 'And he came near and kissed him' means presence and union. This is clear from the meaning of 'coming near' as presence, and from the meaning of 'kissing' as uniting or joining together resulting from affection, 3573. That 'kissing' has this meaning is evident from other places in the Word, as in David,

Serve Jehovah with fear, and kiss the Son lest He be angry and you perish in the way; for His wrath will shortly blaze up. Blessed are all who trust in Him. Psalms 2:11-12.

This refers to the Lord, whose Divine Human is 'the Son'. 'Kissing Him' is being joined to Him by means of faith grounded in love. In the same author,

Let mercy and truth meet, let righteousness and peace kiss each other. Psalms 85:10.

'Let righteousness and peace kiss each other' stands for let them join themselves to each other. In Hosea,

Ephraim has uttered what is horrible and has become guilty through Baal. And now they sin more and more; they are making for themselves a molten image from their silver, even an idol by their own intelligence, the complete work of craftsman to these saying, Those offering human sacrifice kiss the calves. Hosea 13:1-2.

[2] 'Ephraim' stands for intelligence, in this case one's own intelligence. That is, 'Ephraim' stands for those who believe and wish to believe that it is not the Lord who is the source of their wisdom. 'A molten image made from their silver' stands for good made false. 'The complete work of craftsmen' stands for intelligence that is one's own. Those who are such are said to 'kiss the calves', that is, to embrace magic and ally themselves to it. In the first Book of Kings,

Jehovah said to Elijah, I have caused seven thousand to be left over in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him. 1 Kings 19:18.

'Kissing' stands for becoming joined to 'Baal' because of one's affection for him - and so stands for worshipping him.
