1 וידבר יהוה אל־משה לאמר׃

2 נקם נקמת בני ישראל מאת המדינים אחר תאסף אל־עמיך׃

3 וידבר משה אל־העם לאמר החלצו מאתכם אנשים לצבא ויהיו על־מדין לתת נקמת־יהוה במדין׃

4 אלף למטה אלף למטה לכל מטות ישראל תשלחו לצבא׃

5 וימסרו מאלפי ישראל אלף למטה שנים־עשר אלף חלוצי צבא׃

6 וישלח אתם משה אלף למטה לצבא אתם ואת־פינחס בן־אלעזר הכהן לצבא וכלי הקדש וחצצרות התרועה בידו׃

7 ויצבאו על־מדין כאשר צוה יהוה את־משה ויהרגו כל־זכר׃

8 ואת־מלכי מדין הרגו על־חלליהם את־אוי ואת־רקם ואת־צור ואת־חור ואת־רבע חמשת מלכי מדין ואת בלעם בן־בעור הרגו בחרב׃

9 וישבו בני־ישראל את־נשי מדין ואת־טפם ואת כל־בהמתם ואת־כל־מקנהם ואת־כל־חילם בזזו׃

10 ואת כל־עריהם במושבתם ואת כל־טירתם שרפו באש׃

11 ויקחו את־כל־השלל ואת כל־המלקוח באדם ובבהמה׃

12 ויבאו אל־משה ואל־אלעזר הכהן ואל־עדת בני־ישראל את־השבי ואת־המלקוח ואת־השלל אל־המחנה אל־ערבת מואב אשר על־ירדן ירחו׃ ס

13 ויצאו משה ואלעזר הכהן וכל־נשיאי העדה לקראתם אל־מחוץ למחנה׃

14 ויקצף משה על פקודי החיל שרי האלפים ושרי המאות הבאים מצבא המלחמה׃

15 ויאמר אליהם משה החייתם כל־נקבה׃

16 הן הנה היו לבני ישראל בדבר בלעם למסר־מעל ביהוה על־דבר־פעור ותהי המגפה בעדת יהוה׃

17 ועתה הרגו כל־זכר בטף וכל־אשה ידעת איש למשכב זכר הרגו׃

18 וכל הטף בנשים אשר לא־ידעו משכב זכר החיו לכם׃

19 ואתם חנו מחוץ למחנה שבעת ימים כל הרג נפש וכל נגע בחלל תתחטאו ביום השלישי וביום השביעי אתם ושביכם׃

20 וכל־בגד וכל־כלי־עור וכל־מעשה עזים וכל־כלי־עץ תתחטאו׃ ס

21 ויאמר אלעזר הכהן אל־אנשי הצבא הבאים למלחמה זאת חקת התורה אשר־צוה יהוה את־משה׃

22 אך את־הזהב ואת־הכסף את־הנחשת את־הברזל את־הבדיל ואת־העפרת׃

23 כל־דבר אשר־יבא באש תעבירו באש וטהר אך במי נדה יתחטא וכל אשר לא־יבא באש תעבירו במים׃

24 וכבסתם בגדיכם ביום השביעי וטהרתם ואחר תבאו אל־המחנה׃ ף

25 ויאמר יהוה אל־משה לאמר׃

26 שא את ראש מלקוח השבי באדם ובבהמה אתה ואלעזר הכהן וראשי אבות העדה׃

27 וחצית את־המלקוח בין תפשי המלחמה היצאים לצבא ובין כל־העדה׃

28 והרמת מכס ליהוה מאת אנשי המלחמה היצאים לצבא אחד נפש מחמש המאות מן־האדם ומן־הבקר ומן־החמרים ומן־הצאן׃

29 ממחציתם תקחו ונתתה לאלעזר הכהן תרומת יהוה׃

30 וממחצת בני־ישראל תקח אחד אחז מן־החמשים מן־האדם מן־הבקר מן־החמרים ומן־הצאן מכל־הבהמה ונתתה אתם ללוים שמרי משמרת משכן יהוה׃

31 ויעש משה ואלעזר הכהן כאשר צוה יהוה את־משה׃

32 ויהי המלקוח יתר הבז אשר בזזו עם הצבא צאן שש־מאות אלף ושבעים אלף וחמשת־אלפים׃

33 ובקר שנים ושבעים אלף׃

34 וחמרים אחד וששים אלף׃

35 ונפש אדם מן־הנשים אשר לא־ידעו משכב זכר כל־נפש שנים ושלשים אלף׃

36 ותהי המחצה חלק היצאים בצבא מספר הצאן שלש־מאות אלף ושלשים אלף ושבעת אלפים וחמש מאות׃

37 ויהי המכס ליהוה מן־הצאן שש מאות חמש ושבעים׃

38 והבקר ששה ושלשים אלף ומכסם ליהוה שנים ושבעים׃

39 וחמרים שלשים אלף וחמש מאות ומכסם ליהוה אחד וששים׃

40 ונפש אדם ששה עשר אלף ומכסם ליהוה שנים ושלשים נפש׃

41 ויתן משה את־מכס תרומת יהוה לאלעזר הכהן כאשר צוה יהוה את־משה׃

42 וממחצית בני ישראל אשר חצה משה מן־האנשים הצבאים׃

43 ותהי מחצת העדה מן־הצאן שלש־מאות אלף ושלשים אלף שבעת אלפים וחמש מאות׃

44 ובקר ששה ושלשים אלף׃

45 וחמרים שלשים אלף וחמש מאות׃

46 ונפש אדם ששה עשר אלף׃

47 ויקח משה ממחצת בני־ישראל את־האחז אחד מן־החמשים מן־האדם ומן־הבהמה ויתן אתם ללוים שמרי משמרת משכן יהוה כאשר צוה יהוה את־משה׃

48 ויקרבו אל־משה הפקדים אשר לאלפי הצבא שרי האלפים ושרי המאות׃

49 ויאמרו אל־משה עבדיך נשאו את־ראש אנשי המלחמה אשר בידנו ולא־נפקד ממנו איש׃

50 ונקרב את־קרבן יהוה איש אשר מצא כלי־זהב אצעדה וצמיד טבעת עגיל וכומז לכפר על־נפשתינו לפני יהוה׃

51 ויקח משה ואלעזר הכהן את־הזהב מאתם כל כלי מעשה׃

52 ויהי כל־זהב התרומה אשר הרימו ליהוה ששה עשר אלף שבע־מאות וחמשים שקל מאת שרי האלפים ומאת שרי המאות׃

53 אנשי הצבא בזזו איש לו׃

54 ויקח משה ואלעזר הכהן את־הזהב מאת שרי האלפים והמאות ויבאו אתו אל־אהל מועד זכרון לבני־ישראל לפני יהוה׃ ף

55. And I heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet, signifies manifest perception of Divine truth about to be revealed from heaven. This is evident from the signification of "hearing," as being to perceive and obey (See Arcana Coelestia 2542, 3869, 4653, 5017, 7216, 8361, 8990, 9311, 9397); and from the signification of "behind me," as being manifestly (of which hereafter); and from the signification of "voice," when heard out of heaven, as being Divine truth (See Arcana Coelestia 219-220, 3563, 6971, 8813, 8914); and from the signification of a "trumpet," as being truth to be revealed out of heaven (of which hereafter). "Behind me" signifies manifestly, because the things that flow in from heaven into man's affection flow in into the occipital region, and come thus into his manifest perception; for whatever enters into affection is manifestly perceived, for the whole life of perception is from affection; but whatever flows out of heaven immediately into the thought flows into the region above the forehead. (Concerning this influx, see in the work on Heaven and Hell 251.) From this it is clear what is signified by John's having heard "behind him," and by his afterwards "having turned to see the voice which spoke with him." A "trumpet" or "horn" signifies Divine truth about to be revealed out of heaven, because sometimes Divine truth is heard in this way when it flows down from the Lord through the heavens with man; for it is increased in coming down; and it thus flows in. But it is thus heard only in the beginning with those through whom Divine truth is to be revealed in the ultimate sense, which is representative of interior things. But afterwards it is heard as a human voice. From this it is evident why "the voice of a trumpet" or "horn" signifies Divine truth about to be revealed out of heaven.

[2] He who is aware that "trumpet" or "horn," signifies Divine truth out of heaven can understand many passages in the Word where these are mentioned. As in Matthew:

He shall send forth His angel, with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together the elect from the four winds (Matthew 24:31).

In Isaiah:

All ye inhabitants of the world, and ye dwellers on the earth, when the sign of the mountains shall be lifted up, see ye; and when the trumpet is blown, hear ye (Isaiah 18:3).

In Jeremiah:

Proclaim with the trumpet in the land. Set up a standard towards Zion. How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet? For my people are foolish, they are sottish sons, and they have no understanding (Jeremiah 4:5-6, 21-22).

In the same:

I set watchmen over you, saying, Hearken to the sound of the trumpet. But they said, We will not hearken. Therefore hear, ye nations (Jeremiah 6:17-18).

In Ezekiel:

He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him; whereas if he had taken warning he should have delivered his soul (Ezekiel 33:5).

In Hosea:

[Set] the trumpet to thy mouth, because they have transgressed My covenant, and trespassed against My law (Hosea 8:1).

In Zechariah:

The Lord Jehovih shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with the whirlwinds of the south (Zechariah 9:14).

In David:

God is gone up with a shout, and Jehovah with the sound of a trumpet (Psalms 47:5).

And also in Revelation (chap. Revelation 4:1; 8:2, 7-8, 13; 9:1, 13, 14; 10:7; 18:22). Because a "trumpet" signified Divine truth, therefore when Divine truth was first about to be revealed before the people of Israel:

Sounds of a trumpet were heard from Mount Sinai (Exodus 19:16).

For this reason sounding the trumpet became representative with them:

When they were to assemble, and when they went forward, and also in their solemnities, at the beginnings of months, at burnt-offerings and eucharistic sacrifices (Numbers 10:1-10).

They also sounded trumpets when they went forth to battle against the Midianites (Numbers 31:6).

And when they took the city of Jericho (Joshua 6:4-20);

for wars and battles signified spiritual combats, which are combats of truth against falsity, and of falsity against truth.

4 Seven priests shall bear Seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark. On the seventh day, you shall march around the city Seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets.

5 It shall be that when they make a long blast with the ram's horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout with a great shout; and the wall of the city shall fall down flat, and the people shall go up every man straight before him."

6 Joshua the son of Nun called the priests, and said to them, "Take up the ark of the covenant, and let seven priests bear seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of Yahweh."

7 They said to the people, "Advance! March around the city, and let the armed men pass on before Yahweh's ark."

8 It was so, that when Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before Yahweh advanced, and blew the trumpets; and the ark of the covenant of Yahweh followed them.

9 The armed men went before the priests who blew the trumpets, and the ark went after them. The trumpets sounded as they went.

10 Joshua commanded the people, saying, "You shall not shout, nor let your voice be heard, neither shall any word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I tell you to shout. Then you shall shout."

11 So he caused the ark of Yahweh to go around the city, going about it once. Then they came into the camp, and lodged in the camp.

12 Joshua rose early in the morning, and the priests took up the ark of Yahweh.

13 The seven priests bearing the seven trumpets of rams' horns before the ark of Yahweh went on continually, and blew the trumpets: and the armed men went before them. The rear guard came after the ark of Yahweh. The trumpets sounded as they went.

14 The second day they marched around the city once, and returned into the camp. They did this six days.

15 It happened on the seventh day, that they rose early at the dawning of the day, and marched around the city in the same way seven times. Only on this day they marched around the city seven times.

16 It happened at the seventh time, when the priests blew the trumpets, Joshua said to the people, "Shout, for Yahweh has given you the city!

17 The city shall be devoted, even it and all that is in it, to Yahweh. Only Rahab the prostitute shall live, she and all who are with her in the house, because she hid the messengers that we sent.

18 But as for you, only keep yourselves from the devoted thing, lest when you have devoted it, you take of the devoted thing; so would you make the camp of Israel accursed, and trouble it.

19 But all the silver, and gold, and vessels of brass and iron, are holy to Yahweh. They shall come into Yahweh's treasury."

20 So the people shouted, and the priests blew the trumpets. It happened, when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.
