1 ויאמר יהוה אל־משה ואל אלעזר בן־אהרן הכהן לאמר׃

2 שאו את־ראש כל־עדת בני־ישראל מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה לבית אבתם כל־יצא צבא בישראל׃

3 וידבר משה ואלעזר הכהן אתם בערבת מואב על־ירדן ירחו לאמר׃

4 מבן עשרים שנה ומעלה כאשר צוה יהוה את־משה ובני ישראל היצאים מארץ מצרים׃

5 ראובן בכור ישראל בני ראובן חנוך משפחת החנכי לפלוא משפחת הפלאי׃

6 לחצרן משפחת החצרוני לכרמי משפחת הכרמי׃

7 אלה משפחת הראובני ויהיו פקדיהם שלשה וארבעים אלף ושבע מאות ושלשים׃

8 ובני פלוא אליאב׃

9 ובני אליאב נמואל ודתן ואבירם הוא־דתן ואבירם [כ= קרואי] [ק= קריאי] העדה אשר הצו על־משה ועל־אהרן בעדת־קרח בהצתם על־יהוה׃

10 ותפתח הארץ את־פיה ותבלע אתם ואת־קרח במות העדה באכל האש את חמשים ומאתים איש ויהיו לנס׃

11 ובני־קרח לא־מתו׃ ס

12 בני שמעון למשפחתם לנמואל משפחת הנמואלי לימין משפחת הימיני ליכין משפחת היכיני׃

13 לזרח משפחת הזרחי לשאול משפחת השאולי׃

14 אלה משפחת השמעני שנים ועשרים אלף ומאתים׃ ס

15 בני גד למשפחתם לצפון משפחת הצפוני לחגי משפחת החגי לשוני משפחת השוני׃

16 לאזני משפחת האזני לערי משפחת הערי׃

17 לארוד משפחת הארודי לאראלי משפחת האראלי׃

18 אלה משפחת בני־גד לפקדיהם ארבעים אלף וחמש מאות׃ ס

19 בני יהודה ער ואוןן וימת ער ואוןן בארץ כנען׃

20 ויהיו בני־יהודה למשפחתם לשלה משפחת השלני לפרץ משפחת הפרצי לזרח משפחת הזרחי׃

21 ויהיו בני־פרץ לחצרן משפחת החצרני לחמול משפחת החמולי׃

22 אלה משפחת יהודה לפקדיהם ששה ושבעים אלף וחמש מאות׃ ס

23 בני יששכר למשפחתם תולע משפחת התולעי לפוה משפחת הפוני׃

24 לישוב משפחת הישובי לשמרן משפחת השמרני׃

25 אלה משפחת יששכר לפקדיהם ארבעה וששים אלף ושלש מאות׃ ס

26 בני זבולן למשפחתם לסרד משפחת הסרדי לאלון משפחת האלני ליחלאל משפחת היחלאלי׃

27 אלה משפחת הזבולני לפקדיהם ששים אלף וחמש מאות׃ ס

28 בני יוסף למשפחתם מנשה ואפרים׃

29 בני מנשה למכיר משפחת המכירי ומכיר הוליד את־גלעד לגלעד משפחת הגלעדי׃

30 אלה בני גלעד איעזר משפחת האיעזרי לחלק משפחת החלקי׃

31 ואשריאל משפחת האשראלי ושכם משפחת השכמי׃

32 ושמידע משפחת השמידעי וחפר משפחת החפרי׃

33 וצלפחד בן־חפר לא־היו לו בנים כי אם־בנות ושם בנות צלפחד מחלה ונעה חגלה מלכה ותרצה׃

34 אלה משפחת מנשה ופקדיהם שנים וחמשים אלף ושבע מאות׃ ס

35 אלה בני־אפרים למשפחתם לשותלח משפחת השתלחי לבכר משפחת הבכרי לתחן משפחת התחני׃

36 ואלה בני שותלח לערן משפחת הערני׃

37 אלה משפחת בני־אפרים לפקדיהם שנים ושלשים אלף וחמש מאות אלה בני־יוסף למשפחתם׃ ס

38 בני בנימן למשפחתם לבלע משפחת הבלעי לאשבל משפחת האשבלי לאחירם משפחת האחירמי׃

39 לשפופם משפחת השופמי לחופם משפחת החופמי׃

40 ויהיו בני־בלע ארד ונעמן משפחת הארדי לנעמן משפחת הנעמי׃

41 אלה בני־בנימן למשפחתם ופקדיהם חמשה וארבעים אלף ושש מאות׃ ס

42 אלה בני־דן למשפחתם לשוחם משפחת השוחמי אלה משפחת דן למשפחתם׃

43 כל־משפחת השוחמי לפקדיהם ארבעה וששים אלף וארבע מאות׃ ס

44 בני אשר למשפחתם לימנה משפחת הימנה לישוי משפחת הישוי לבריעה משפחת הבריעי׃

45 לבני בריעה לחבר משפחת החברי למלכיאל משפחת המלכיאלי׃

46 ושם בת־אשר שרח׃

47 אלה משפחת בני־אשר לפקדיהם שלשה וחמשים אלף וארבע מאות׃ ס

48 בני נפתלי למשפחתם ליחצאל משפחת היחצאלי לגוני משפחת הגוני׃

49 ליצר משפחת היצרי לשלם משפחת השלמי׃

50 אלה משפחת נפתלי למשפחתם ופקדיהם חמשה וארבעים אלף וארבע מאות׃

51 אלה פקודי בני ישראל שש־מאות אלף ואלף שבע מאות ושלשים׃ ף

52 וידבר יהוה אל־משה לאמר׃

53 לאלה תחלק הארץ בנחלה במספר שמות׃

54 לרב תרבה נחלתו ולמעט תמעיט נחלתו איש לפי פקדיו יתן נחלתו׃

55 אך־בגורל יחלק את־הארץ לשמות מטות־אבתם ינחלו׃

56 על־פי הגורל תחלק נחלתו בין רב למעט׃ ס

57 ואלה פקודי הלוי למשפחתם לגרשון משפחת הגרשני לקהת משפחת הקהתי למררי משפחת המררי׃

58 אלה משפחת לוי משפחת הלבני משפחת החברני משפחת המחלי משפחת המושי משפחת הקרחי וקהת הולד את־עמרם׃

59 ושם אשת עמרם יוכבד בת־לוי אשר ילדה אתה ללוי במצרים ותלד לעמרם את־אהרן ואת־משה ואת מרים אחתם׃

60 ויולד לאהרן את־נדב ואת־אביהוא את־אלעזר ואת־איתמר׃

61 וימת נדב ואביהוא בהקריבם אש־זרה לפני יהוה׃

62 ויהיו פקדיהם שלשה ועשרים אלף כל־זכר מבן־חדש ומעלה כי לא התפקדו בתוך בני ישראל כי לא־נתן להם נחלה בתוך בני ישראל׃

63 אלה פקודי משה ואלעזר הכהן אשר פקדו את־בני ישראל בערבת מואב על ירדן ירחו׃

64 ובאלה לא־היה איש מפקודי משה ואהרן הכהן אשר פקדו את־בני ישראל במדבר סיני׃

65 כי־אמר יהוה להם מות ימתו במדבר ולא־נותר מהם איש כי אם־כלב בן־יפנה ויהושע בן־נון׃ ס

409. And it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. This symbolically means that consequently all the Word's truths had been completely falsified.

Rivers symbolize truths in abundance, because waters symbolize truths (no. 50); and springs of water or fountains symbolize the Word (no. 384). The meaning is that the Word's truths had been completely falsified, because in the next verse we are told that a third of the waters became wormwood, and wormwood symbolizes hellish falsity (no. 410).

[2] That rivers symbolize truths in abundance can be seen from the following passages:

...I am doing a new thing... ...I will give waters in the wilderness and rivers in the desert, to give drink to My people, My chosen. (Isaiah 43:19-20)

...I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and rivers on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your offspring, and My blessing on your descendants. (Isaiah 44:3)

Then... the tongue of the dumb shall sing; for waters shall burst forth in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert plain. (Isaiah 35:6)

I will open rivers in the heights, and put fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. (Isaiah 41:18)

(Jehovah) has founded (the world) upon the seas, ...established it upon the rivers. (Psalms 24:2)

I will set His hand over the sea, and His right hand on the rivers. (Psalms 89:25)

Was Jehovah angry with the rivers? Was Your anger against the rivers? Was Your wrath against the sea, that You rode on Your horses...? (Habakkuk 3:8)

There is a river whose streams shall make glad the city of God... (Psalms 46:4)

He showed me a pure river of water of life..., proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. (Revelation 22:1)

He split the rocks in the wilderness, and made the great abysses drink... ...He struck the rock..., and rivers flowed out... (Psalms 78:15-16, 20, cf. 105:41)

The waters will fail in the sea, and the river will be... dried up. (Isaiah 19:5-7; cf. 42:15; 50:2, Nahum 1:4, Psalms 107:33, Job 14:11)

(Jesus said, "If anyone comes to Me,) as the Scripture has said, out of his belly will flow rivers of living water." (John 7:37-38)

And so, too, elsewhere, such as Isaiah 33:21, Jeremiah 17:7-8, Deuteronomy 8:7.

[3] In an opposite sense, however, rivers symbolize falsities in abundance, as can be seen from the following:

(It) will send ambassadors by sea... to a nation... downtrodden, whose land the rivers have despoiled. (Isaiah 18:2)

If not for Jehovah on our side..., ...the waters would have overwhelmed us, (and) the river would have gone over our soul. (Psalms 124:2, 4-5)

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you. (Isaiah 43:2)

The cords of death surrounded me, and the rivers of Belial terrified me. (Psalms 18:5)

(The dragon) spewed water out of its mouth like a river after the woman, that it might cause her to be swallowed up by the stream. (Revelation 12:15)

...behold, Jehovah will cause to rise over them the waters of the river, strong and many..., and it will... overflow and pass through, and reach up to the neck. (Isaiah 8:7-8)

...the floods came, and... rushed upon that house; and (yet) it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. (Matthew 7:25; cf. 7:27, Luke 6:48-49)

Rivers here, too, stand for falsities in abundance, because the rock symbolizes the Lord in relation to Divine truth.

Rivers also symbolize temptations or trials, because temptations or trials are inundations of falsities.

48 He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it was founded on the rock.

49 But he who hears, and doesn't do, is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great."
