1 ויהי כאשר־תמו כל־הגוי לעבור את־הירדן ף ויאמר יהוה אל־יהושע לאמר׃

2 קחו לכם מן־העם שנים עשר אנשים איש־אחד איש־אחד משבט׃

3 וצוו אותם לאמר שאו־לכם מזה מתוך הירדן ממצב רגלי הכהנים הכין שתים־עשרה אבנים והעברתם אותם עםכם והנחתם אותם במלון אשר־תלינו בו הלילה׃ ס

4 ויקרא יהושע אל־שנים העשר איש אשר הכין מבני ישראל איש־אחד איש־אחד משבט׃

5 ויאמר להם יהושע עברו לפני ארון יהוה אלהיכם אל־תוך הירדן והרימו לכם איש אבן אחת על־שכמו למספר שבטי בני־ישראל׃

6 למען תהיה זאת אות בקרבכם כי־ישאלון בניכם מחר לאמר מה האבנים האלה לכם׃

7 ואמרתם להם אשר נכרתו מימי הירדן מפני ארון ברית־יהוה בעברו בירדן נכרתו מי הירדן והיו האבנים האלה לזכרון לבני ישראל עד־עולם׃

8 ויעשו־כן בני־ישראל כאשר צוה יהושע וישאו שתי־עשרה אבנים מתוך הירדן כאשר דבר יהוה אל־יהושע למספר שבטי בני־ישראל ויעברום עםם אל־המלון וינחום שם׃

9 ושתים עשרה אבנים הקים יהושע בתוך הירדן תחת מצב רגלי הכהנים נשאי ארון הברית ויהיו שם עד היום הזה׃

10 והכהנים נשאי הארון עמדים בתוך הירדן עד תם כל־הדבר אשר־צוה יהוה את־יהושע לדבר אל־העם ככל אשר־צוה משה את־יהושע וימהרו העם ויעברו׃

11 ויהי כאשר־תם כל־העם לעבור ויעבר ארון־יהוה והכהנים לפני העם׃

12 ויעברו בני־ראובן ובני־גד וחצי שבט המנשה חמשים לפני בני ישראל כאשר דבר אליהם משה׃

13 כארבעים אלף חלוצי הצבא עברו לפני יהוה למלחמה אל ערבות יריחו׃ ס

14 ביום ההוא גדל יהוה את־יהושע בעיני כל־ישראל ויראו אתו כאשר יראו את־משה כל־ימי חייו׃ ף

15 ויאמר יהוה אל־יהושע לאמר׃

16 צוה את־הכהנים נשאי ארון העדות ויעלו מן־הירדן׃

17 ויצו יהושע את־הכהנים לאמר עלו מן־הירדן׃

18 ויהי [כ= בעלות] [ק= כעלות] הכהנים נשאי ארון ברית־יהוה מתוך הירדן נתקו כפות רגלי הכהנים אל החרבה וישבו מי־הירדן למקוםם וילכו כתמול־שלשום על־כל־גדותיו׃

19 והעם עלו מן־הירדן בעשור לחדש הראשון ויחנו בגלגל בקצה מזרח יריחו׃

20 ואת שתים עשרה האבנים האלה אשר לקחו מן־הירדן הקים יהושע בגלגל׃

21 ויאמר אל־בני ישראל לאמר אשר ישאלון בניכם מחר את־אבותם לאמר מה האבנים האלה׃

22 והודעתם את־בניכם לאמר ביבשה עבר ישראל את־הירדן הזה׃

23 אשר־הוביש יהוה אלהיכם את־מי הירדן מפניכם עד־עברכם כאשר עשה יהוה אלהיכם לים־סוף אשר־הוביש מפנינו עד־עברנו׃

24 למען דעת כל־עמי הארץ את־יד יהוה כי חזקה היא למען יראתם את־יהוה אלהיכם כל־הימים׃ ס

9415. 'Come up to Me into the mountain, and be there' means the Lord's presence with them through an intermediary. This is clear from the meaning of 'going up' as being raised towards higher, that is, more internal things, dealt with in 3084, 4539, 4969, 5406, 5817, 6007, and consequently being joined to them, 8760, 9373. The Lord's presence is meant because it says, 'Come up to Me into the mountain, and be there'; for Jehovah to whom Moses was told to go up means the Lord, see above in 9414, and 'Mount Sinai' means the Word which comes from the Lord, and in which the Lord is for that reason present, 8399, 8753, 8793, 8805. Heaven too is meant by that mountain, for the Word is Divine Truth emanating from the Lord, and heaven is a receptacle of God's truth, thus of the Lord Himself, as has often been shown before. From this it is evident that 'going up to Jehovah into the mountain' means the Lord's presence. His presence with that people is through an intermediary, because Moses now represents the people as its head, and so as an intermediary, as stated immediately above in 9414.

[2] The words 'the Lord's presence with them through an intermediary' are used here because the Lord makes Himself present with man, but man does not make himself present with the Lord. For all the good that belongs to love and the truth that belongs to faith comes from the Lord, and no good or truth whatever comes from man. Therefore the Lord's presence exists with those who let Him in, that is, with those who receive in faith and love God's truth coming from Him. That the Lord comes to them, and not they to him, is the Lord's own teaching in John,

He who loves Me keeps My word, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. John 14:23.

In the same gospel,

He who abides in Me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for without Me you can do nothing. John 15:5.

And in the same gospel,

Man cannot receive 1 anything unless it is given him from heaven. John 3:27.
