1 Και ειπε Κυριος προς τον Μωυσην και προς τον Ααρων εν τη γη της Αιγυπτου, λεγων,

2 Ο μην ουτος θελει εισθαι εις εσας αρχη μηνων· θελει εισθαι εις εσας πρωτος των μηνων του ενιαυτου.

3 Λαλησατε προς πασαν την συναγωγην του Ισραηλ, λεγοντες, Την δεκατην τουτου του μηνος ας λαβωσιν εις εαυτους εκαστος εν αρνιον κατα τους οικους των πατριων αυτων, εν αρνιον δι' εκαστον οικον.

4 Εαν ομως ηναι οι εν τω οικω ολιγοστοι δια το αρνιον, αυτος και ο γειτων αυτου ο πλησιεστερος της οικιας αυτου ας λαβωσιν αυτο κατα τον αριθμον των ψυχων· εκαστος θελει συναριθμεισθαι δια το αρνιον αναλογως με το αρκετον εις αυτον να φαγη.

5 Το δε αρνιον σας θελει εισθαι τελειον, αρσενικον ενιαυσιον· εκ των προβατων η εκ των αιγων θελετε λαβει αυτο.

6 Και θελετε φυλαττει αυτο μεχρι της δεκατης τεταρτης του αυτου μηνος· και τοτε απαν το πληθος της συναγωγης του Ισραηλ θελει σφαξει αυτο προς το εσπερας.

7 Και θελουσι λαβει εκ του αιματος και βαλει επι τους δυο παραστατας και επι το ανωφλιον της θυρας των οικιων, οπου θελουσι φαγει αυτο.

8 Και θελουσι φαγει το κρεας την νυκτα εκεινην, οπτον εν πυρι· με αζυμα, και με χορτα πικρα θελουσι φαγει αυτο·

9 μη φαγητε απ' αυτου ωμον, μηδε βραστον εν υδατι, αλλα οπτον εν πυρι· την κεφαλην αυτου μετα των ποδων αυτου και μετα των εντοσθιων αυτου·

10 και μη αφησητε υπολοιπον απ' αυτου εως το πρωι· ο, τι δε περισσευση απ' αυτου εως το πρωι, καυσατε εν πυρι.

11 Και ουτω θελετε φαγει αυτο· Εζωσμενοι τας οσφυας σας, εχοντες τα υποδηματα σας εις τους ποδας σας και την ραβδον σας εις την χειρα σας· και θελετε φαγει αυτο μετα σπουδης· ειναι πασχα του Κυριου.

12 Διοτι την νυκτα ταυτην θελω περασει δια μεσου της γης της Αιγυπτου και θελω παταξει παν πρωτοτοκον εν τη γη της Αιγυπτου, απο ανθρωπου εως κτηνους· και θελω καμει κρισεις εναντιον παντων των θεων της Αιγυπτου. Εγω ο Κυριος.

13 Και το αιμα θελει εισθαι εις εσας δια σημειον επι των οικιων, εις τας οποιας κατοικειτε· και οταν ιδω το αιμα, θελω σας παρατρεξει, και η πληγη δεν θελει εισθαι εις εσας δια να σας εξολοθρευση, οταν παταξω την γην της Αιγυπτου.

14 Και η ημερα αυτη θελει εισθαι εις εσας εις μνημοσυνον· και θελετε εορταζει αυτην εορτην εις τον Κυριον εις τας γενεας σας· κατα νομον παντοτεινον θελετε εορταζει αυτην.

15 Επτα ημερας θελετε τρωγει αζυμα· απο της πρωτης ημερας θελετε σηκωσει το προζυμιον εκ των οικιων σας· διοτι οστις φαγη ενζυμα απο της πρωτης εως της εβδομης ημερας, η ψυχη εκεινη θελει εξολοθρευθη εκ του Ισραηλ.

16 Και εν τη πρωτη ημερα θελει εισθαι συναξις αγια· και εν τη εβδομη ημερα συναξις αγια θελει εισθαι εις εσας· ουδεμια εργασια θελει γινεσθαι εν αυταις, εκτος ο, τι χρειαζεται εις εκαστον ανθρωπον δια να φαγη· τουτο μονον θελετε καμει.

17 Θελετε φυλαξει λοιπον την εορτην των αζυμων· διοτι την αυτην ταυτην ημεραν θελω εξαγαγει τα ταγματα σας εκ της γης της Αιγυπτου· οθεν κατα νομον παντοτεινον θελετε φυλαττει την ημεραν ταυτην εις τας γενεας σας·

18 αρχομενοι απο της δεκατης τεταρτης ημερας του μηνος αφ' εσπερας, θελετε τρωγει αζυμα εως της εικοστης πρωτης ημερας του μηνος την εσπεραν·

19 επτα ημερας δεν θελει ευρισκεσθαι προζυμιον εν ταις οικιαις υμων· διοτι οστις φαγη ενζυμα, η ψυχη εκεινη θελει εξολοθρευθη εκ της συναγωγης του Ισραηλ, ειτε ξενος ειναι ειτε αυτοχθων·

20 ουδεν ενζυμον θελετε φαγει· εν πασαις ταις κατοικιαις υμων αζυμα θελετε τρωγει.

21 Τοτε εκαλεσεν ο Μωυσης παντας τους πρεσβυτερους του Ισραηλ και ειπε προς αυτους, Εκλεξατε και λαβετε εις εαυτους εν αρνιον, κατα τας οικογενειας σας, και θυσατε το πασχα·

22 επειτα θελετε λαβει δεσμην υσσωπου και θελετε εμβαψει αυτην εις το αιμα, το οποιον θελει εισθαι εις λεκανην· και απο του αιματος του εν τη λεκανη θελετε κτυπησει το ανωφλιον και τους δυο παραστατας των θυρων· και ουδεις απο σας θελει εξελθει εκ της θυρας της οικιας αυτου εως το πρωι·

23 διοτι ο Κυριος θελει περασει δια να παταξη τους Αιγυπτιους· και οταν ιδη το αιμα επι το ανωφλιον και επι τους δυο παραστατας, ο Κυριος θελει παρατρεξει την θυραν, και δεν θελει αφησει τον εξολοθρευτην να εισελθη εις τας οικιας σας, δια να παταξη.

24 Και θελετε φυλαξει το πραγμα τουτο ως νομον, εις σεαυτον και εις τους υιους σου, εως αιωνος.

25 Και οταν εισελθητε εις την γην, την οποιαν ο Κυριος θελει σας δωσει καθως ελαλησε, θελετε φυλαξει την λατρειαν ταυτην.

26 Και οταν σας λεγωσιν οι υιοι σας, Τι σημαινει εις εσας η λατρεια αυτη;

27 θελετε αποκρινεσθαι, Τουτο ειναι θυσια του πασχα εις τον Κυριον, διοτι παρετρεξε τας οικιας των υιων Ισραηλ εν Αιγυπτω, οτε επαταξε τους Αιγυπτιους και εσωσε τας οικιας ημων. Τοτε ο λαος κυψας προσεκυνησε.

28 Και αναχωρησαντες οι υιοι Ισραηλ, εκαμον καθως προσεταξεν ο Κυριος εις τον Μωυσην και τον Ααρων· ουτως εκαμον.

29 Κατα δε το μεσονυκτιον ο Κυριος επαταξε παν πρωτοτοκον εν τη γη της Αιγυπτου· απο του πρωτοτοκου του Φαραω οστις καθηται επι του θρονου αυτου, εως του πρωτοτοκου του αιχμαλωτου του εν τω δεσμωτηριω· και παντα τα πρωτοτοκα των κτηνων.

30 Και εσηκωθη ο Φαραω την νυκτα, αυτος και παντες οι θεραποντες αυτου και παντες οι Αιγυπτιοι· και εγεινε βοη μεγαλη εν τη Αιγυπτω· διοτι δεν ητο οικια εις την οποιαν δεν υπηρχε νεκρος.

31 Και εκαλεσε τον Μωυσην και τον Ααρων δια νυκτος και ειπε, Σηκωθητε, εξελθετε εκ μεσου του λαου μου και σεις και οι υιοι του Ισραηλ· και υπαγετε, λατρευσατε τον Κυριον, καθως ειπετε·

32 και τα ποιμνια σας και τας αγελας σας λαβετε, καθως ειπετε, και απελθετε· ευλογησατε δε και εμε.

33 Και εβιαζον οι Αιγυπτιοι τον λαον δια να εκβαλωσιν αυτον ταχεως εκ του τοπου· διοτι ειπον, Ημεις παντες αποθνησκομεν.

34 Και εσηκωσεν ο λαος την ζυμην αυτου πριν αναβη, εχων εκαστος την σκαφην αυτου επι τους ωμους αυτου, εντετυλιγμενην εις τα φορεματα αυτου.

35 Και εκαμον οι υιοι του Ισραηλ κατα τον λογον του Μωυσεως και εζητησαν παρα των Αιγυπτιων σκευη αργυρα και σκευη χρυσα, και ενδυματα·

36 και ο Κυριος εδωκεν εις τον λαον χαριν ενωπιον των Αιγυπτιων, και εδανεισαν εις αυτους οσα εζητησαν· και εγυμνωσαν τους Αιγυπτιους.

37 Ανεχωρησαν δε οι υιοι Ισραηλ απο Ραμεσση εις Σοκχωθ, περιπου εξακοσιαι χιλιαδες ανδρες πεζοι χωρις των παιδιων.

38 Μετ' αυτων συνανεβη και μεγα πληθος συμμικτον ανθρωπων και ποιμνια και αγελαι, κτηνη πολλα σφοδρα.

39 Και εκ της ζυμης, την οποιαν εφεραν εξ Αιγυπτου, εψησαν εγκρυφιας αζυμους· διοτι δεν ητο προζυμιον, επειδη εδιωχθησαν εξ Αιγυπτου και δεν εδυνηθησαν να βραδυνωσιν, ουδε εφοδιον προητοιμασαν εις εαυτους.

40 Ο καιρος δε της παροικιας των υιων Ισραηλ, την οποιαν παρωκησαν εν Αιγυπτω, ητο τετρακοσια και τριακοντα ετη.

41 Και μετα τα τετρακοσια και τριακοντα ετη, την αυτην εκεινην ημεραν εξηλθον παντα τα ταγματα του Κυριου εκ γης Αιγυπτου.

42 Αυτη ειναι νυξ, ητις πρεπει να φυλαττηται εις τον Κυριον, διοτι εξηγαγεν αυτους εκ γης Αιγυπτου· αυτη ειναι η νυξ εκεινη του Κυριου, ητις πρεπει να φυλαττηται παρα παντων των υιων Ισραηλ εις τας γενεας αυτων.

43 Ειπε δε Κυριος προς τον Μωυσην και Ααρων, Ουτος ειναι ο νομος του πασχα· ουδεις αλλογενης θελει φαγει απ' αυτου·

44 και εκαστος δουλος αργυρωνητος αφου περιτμηθη, τοτε θελει φαγει απ' αυτου·

45 ο ξενος δε και ο μισθωτος δεν θελουσι φαγει απ' αυτου.

46 Εν τη αυτη οικια θελει φαγωθη· απο του κρεατος δεν θελετε φερει εξω της οικιας, και οστουν δεν θελετε συντριψει απ' αυτου.

47 Πασα η συναγωγη του Ισραηλ θελει καμει τουτο.

48 Και εαν τις ξενος, παροικων μετα σου, θελη να καμη το πασχα εις τον Κυριον, ας περιτμηθωσι παντα τα αρσενικα αυτου, και τοτε ας πλησιαση δια να καμη αυτο· και θελει εισθαι ως ο αυτοχθων της γης· διοτι ουδεις απεριτμητος θελει φαγει απ' αυτου.

49 Ο αυτος νομος θελει εισθαι δια τον αυτοχθονα και δια τον ξενον τον παροικουντα μεταξυ σας.

50 Και εκαμον παντες οι υιοι του Ισραηλ καθως προσεταξεν ο Κυριος εις τον Μωυσην και τον Ααρων· ουτως εκαμον.

51 Και την αυτην εκεινην ημεραν εξηγαγεν ο Κυριος τους υιους Ισραηλ εκ γης Αιγυπτου κατα τα ταγματα αυτων.

7779. 'From Pharaoh's firstborn who is to sit on his throne' means falsified truths of faith that occupy the first place. This is clear from the meaning of 'firstborn' as faith, dealt with in 352, 2435, 6344, 7035; from the representation of 'Pharaoh' as factual knowledge in general perverting the Church's truths, dealt with in 6015, 6651, 6679, 6683, 6692, so that 'Pharaoh's firstborn' is faith consisting of such truths, that is, faith consisting of falsified truths of faith; and from the meaning of 'throne' as the rule of truth, and in the contrary sense the rule of falsity, dealt with in 5313. The fact that 'Pharaoh's firstborn who is to sit on his throne' means falsified truths of faith that occupy the first place is evident from the use of the words 'even to the firstborn of the servant-girl who is behind the mill', which mean falsified truths of faith that occupy the very last place; besides which the king's son means that which is primary since the king is the head.

[2] Falsified truths occupying the first place are those which are taken to be essential truths, such as these: Faith saves a person irrespective of the life he has been leading; it saves a person in the final hour of his life; he is at that point pure and free from sins, which means that these are removed in an instant like dirt on the hands by water. Those falsified truths posit that faith does exist without charity, that so far as a person's salvation is concerned it does not matter what kind of life he leads, and also that a person who is a devil can become an angel of God in an instant. Such notions and others like them are the falsified truths occupying the first place; those that are immediately derived from them occupy the second place; and those which are remotely derived from them occupy the last place. For every truth has a long wide-ranging sequence of derivations, some of which are in a direct line from it, some at an angle, while those that merely touch on that truth stand on the outermost edges.

[3] The fact that such notions and others like them are falsified truths of faith is very plain to see. Does anyone who thinks properly not know that the life of faith makes a person spiritual, not faith except to the extent that it has been integrated into his life? A person's life is his love, and what he loves, that he wills and intends; and what he wills and intends, that he does. This is the essential nature (esse) of the person, not what he knows, or what he thinks but does not will. That essential nature of a person cannot possibly be changed into a different one by his thinking about mediation and salvation, only by new birth, which is being effected throughout a large part of his life. For he must be conceived, be born, and mature anew; and this is not effected by thinking and speaking, but by willing and acting.

[4] These matters have been stated because 'Pharaoh's firstborn' and 'the firstborn of the Egyptians' mean faith separated from charity, which - as has been shown in what has gone before - is not faith but the knowledge of such things as constitute faith. The reason why 'the firstborn of the Egyptians' represented that kind of faith is that the Egyptians, more than all others who constituted the representative Church after the time of the Flood, possessed a knowledge of the religious observances of the Church, 4749, 4964, 4966, 6004. At that time all ceremonies were representative of spiritual realities in heaven. The Egyptians had a greater knowledge of these than all others had; but in course of time they began to love merely their knowledge of them. They now began to think, as one finds at the present day, that the Church consisted entirely in knowing the kinds of things that have to do with the Church, and no longer in a charitable life. Thus they turned the whole order of the Church upside down; and once this had been turned upside down truths which are called the truths of faith were inevitably falsified. For if truths are applied in ways contrary to Divine order - as happens when they are applied to evils, or in the case of the Egyptians to acts of magic - they are no longer truths with those people but acquire from the evils to which they are applied the nature of falsities.

[5] Let the calf-worship among Egyptians serve to illustrate this. They knew what a calf represented, namely the good of charity. As long as they knew this and had this in mind, then when they saw calves, or when they prepared calves at charitable feasts, such as the ancients held, or later on when calves were used in sacrifices, they thought in a way that was sane and at the same time in company with the angels in heaven since a calf is for them the good of charity. But when they began to make calves of gold, place them in their temples, and worship them, they thought in an insane manner and at the same time in company with the hells. In that way they turned a true representative into a false one.

6692. 'And Pharaoh commanded all his people' means a general influx into factual knowledge opposed to the Church's truths. This is clear from the meaning of 'commanding' as an influx, dealt with in 5486, 5732, here a general influx since the command came from Pharaoh, who represents factual knowledge in general, 6015; and from the meaning of 'his people' as factual knowledge opposed to the Church's truths. The meaning of the Egyptians, to whom 'people' refers here, as factual knowledge has been demonstrated often, see 6638. The reason why factual knowledge opposed to the Church's truths is meant by 'the Egyptians' is that the representative forms and meaningful signs of the Ancient Church, a Church which had existed also among them, had been turned there into magic. For through the Church's representative forms and meaningful signs there was contact at that time with heaven. This contact existed among those who led lives filled with the good of charity, and among many it was open contact. Among those however who did not lead a good charitable life but acted in ways contrary to it, open contact sometimes existed with evil spirits who perverted all the Church's truths, and along with them destroyed all that was good, from which magic arose. This may also be recognized from the hieroglyphics among the Egyptians, who also used them in their sacred rituals. They used them as signs of spiritual things, and they used them to pervert Divine order.

[2] Magic is nothing else than the perversion of order; in particular it is the misuse of correspondences. If true order is to exist, goodness and truth as they emanate from the Lord must find acceptance in a person. When they do, true order is present in every particular aspect of the person's intentions and thoughts. But when they do not find acceptance in him as true order originating in the Lord requires and he instead believes that everything is a purposeless stream of events, or if anything does have purpose, that it is attributable to his own prudence, he perverts true order. For he makes use of what belongs to order solely for his own interests and not those of his neighbour, except insofar as his neighbour is favourably disposed towards him. This accounts for the astonishing fact that all who have become firmly convinced that everything is attributable to their own prudence and nothing at all to Divine providence are very much inclined towards magic in the next life, and also involve themselves in it as much as they can. This is especially so with those who, trusting in themselves and ascribing everything to their own prudence, have worked out many sly and cunning ways of gaining superiority over others. Once people like this have undergone judgement in the next life they are sent off to the hells of those who work magic. These hells are on the right on a level with the soles of the feet, a little way out in front and extending to a considerable distance; and the Egyptians are in the deepest ones. Here then is why 'Pharaoh', 'the Egyptians', and 'Egypt' mean factual knowledge opposed to the Church's truths.

[3] To prevent therefore any further perversion of the Church's representative forms and meaningful signs into forms of magic, the Israelite people were selected, and among them the Church's representative forms and meaningful signs were to be re-established. The nature of this people was such that it could not create magic out of them, for they were interested solely in external things and had no belief in anything internal, let alone anything spiritual. Among people like this no magic can arise such as existed among the Egyptians.
