The reason why 'a darting serpent on the path' means reasoning from truth regarding good is that 'a serpent' means reasoning, so that 'a darting serpent' means reasoning that pushes itself forward - from truth towards good, since truth residing with those represented by 'Dan' is below, while good is above.
