3059. Verses 12-14 And he said, O Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham, make it go right for me today 1 and deal mercifully with my master Abraham. Behold, I am standing beside a spring of water and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. And let it be that the girl to whom I say, Let down now your pitcher and I will drink, and she says, Drink, and also I will give your camels a drink - let her be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac. And in this I shall know that You have dealt mercifully with my master.

'He said' means communication. 'O Jehovah, the God of my master Abraham' means of the Divine itself, which is the Father, with the Divine Human, which is the Son. 'Make it go right for me today' means providence at work from eternity. 'And deal mercifully' means an influx of love. 'With my master Abraham' means the Divine Human. 'Behold, I am standing beside a spring of water' means a state when within the Human conjunction takes places involving Divine truth. 'And the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water' means affections for truth, and instruction acquired through those affections. 'And let the girl to whom I say' means an affection that has innocence within it. 'Let down now your pitcher' means submitting facts. 'And I will drink' means instruction from them in truth. 'And she says, Drink' means an affirmative response to the same. 'And also I will give your camels a drink' means consequent enlightenment of all facts within the natural man. 'Let her be the one whom You have appointed for Your servant Isaac' means the joining together of Divine truth and Divine Good in the Rational. 'And in this I shall know that You have dealt mercifully with my master' means that the beginning of the marriage lies in Divine love.

Gate

People around a village gate, by Adrianus Eversen

Gates" in ancient times had a significance that does not hold in the modern world. Cities then were enclosed by walls for protection; gates in the walls let people in and out to do their business, but were also the weak points in the cities' defenses. In the Bible, cities on one level represent the minds of individual people. On a broader level, they represent beliefs shared by a community. The gates, then, represent openings where the Lord can feed us an understanding of truth and a desire for good. They also represent points where the hells can invade and sway us with false ideas and evil desires. We are kept in balance during our lifetimes, with influences from both the Lord and from hell. Ideally, we will over our lifetimes continue to invite the Lord farther and farther in and drive the hells back until ultimately the Lord can occupy our minds completely. And that point our belief in Him and His power and love will hold the gates and deny evil any entrance. As individuals, we at that point become angels. As communities, we at that point become part of the Lord's church. And at that point the gates become an entry point, introductory truths that allow people to enter churches and start bringing the Lord into their lives.
