In Genesis 21, 'wells' signify doctrines, both those disputed and not disputed. Without this significance digging wells and disputing about them would have been too trivial to be mentioned in the divine Word.

6781. 'And watered their flock' means that those governed by good received instruction from it. This is clear from the meaning of 'watering', or giving a drink, as giving instruction, dealt with in 3069, 3092, 3772; and from the meaning of 'the flock' as those who learn about and are led to the good of charity, dealt with in 343, 3772, 5913, 6048, thus those who are governed by good.
