1 Und Jehova sprach zu Mose: Gehe zu dem Pharao hinein und sprich zu ihm: So spricht Jehova: Laß mein Volk ziehen, daß sie mir dienen!

2 Und wenn du dich weigerst, es ziehen zu lassen, siehe, so will ich dein ganzes Gebiet mit Fröschen schlagen.

3 Und der Strom wird von Fröschen wimmeln, und sie werden heraufsteigen und in dein Haus kommen und in dein Schlafgemach und auf dein Bett und in die Häuser deiner Knechte und unter dein Volk und in deine Öfen und in deine Backtröge.

4 Und die Frösche werden heraufkommen über dich und über dein Volk und über alle deine Knechte.

5 Und Jehova sprach zu Mose: Sprich zu Aaron: Strecke deine Hand mit deinem Stabe aus über die Flüsse, über die Kanäle und über die Teiche, und laß die Frösche über das Land Ägypten heraufkommen.

6 Da streckte Aaron seine Hand aus über die Wasser in Ägypten, und die Frösche kamen herauf und bedeckten das Land Ägypten.

7 Und die Schriftgelehrten taten ebenso mit ihren Zauberkünsten und ließen die Frösche über das Land Ägypten heraufkommen.

8 Und der Pharao rief Mose und Aaron und sprach: Flehet zu Jehova, daß er die Frösche von mir und von meinem Volke wegnehme, so will ich das Volk ziehen lassen, daß sie Jehova opfern.

9 Und Mose sprach zum Pharao: Bestimme über mich, auf wann ich für dich und für deine Knechte und für dein Volk flehen soll, die Frösche von dir und aus deinen Häusern auszurotten; nur im Strome sollen sie übrigbleiben.

10 Und er sprach: Auf morgen. Da sprach er: Es sei nach deinem Worte, auf daß du wissest, daß niemand ist wie Jehova, unser Gott.

11 Und die Frösche werden von dir weichen und von deinen Häusern und von deinen Knechten und von deinem Volke; nur im Strome sollen sie übrigbleiben.

12 Und Mose und Aaron gingen von dem Pharao hinaus; und Mose schrie zu Jehova wegen der Frösche, die er über den Pharao gebracht hatte.

13 Und Jehova tat nach dem Worte Moses, und die Frösche starben weg aus den Häusern, aus den Gehöften und von den Feldern.

14 Und sie sammelten sie haufenweise, und das Land stank.

15 Und als der Pharao sah, daß Erleichterung geworden war, da verstockte er sein Herz, und er hörte nicht auf sie, so wie Jehova geredet hatte.

16 Und Jehova sprach zu Mose: Sprich zu Aaron: Strecke deinen Stab aus und schlage den Staub der Erde, und er wird zu Stechmücken werden im ganzen Lande Ägypten.

17 Und sie taten also; und Aaron streckte seine Hand mit seinem Stabe aus und schlug den Staub der Erde, und die Stechmücken kamen über die Menschen und über das Vieh; aller Staub der Erde wurde zu Stechmücken im ganzen Lande Ägypten.

18 Und die Schriftgelehrten taten ebenso mit ihren Zauberkünsten, um die Stechmücken hervorzubringen; aber sie konnten es nicht. Und die Stechmücken kamen über die Menschen und über das Vieh.

19 Da sprachen die Schriftgelehrten zum Pharao: Das ist Gottes Finger! Aber das Herz des Pharao verhärtete sich, und er hörte nicht auf sie, so wie Jehova geredet hatte.

20 Und Jehova sprach zu Mose: Mache dich des Morgens früh auf und tritt vor den Pharao siehe, er wird ans Wasser hinausgehen und sprich zu ihm: Also spricht Jehova: Laß mein Volk ziehen, daß sie mir dienen!

21 Denn wenn du mein Volk nicht ziehen lässest, siehe, so werde ich die Hundsfliegen senden über dich und über deine Knechte und über dein Volk und in deine Häuser; und die Häuser der Ägypter werden voll Hundsfliegen sein und auch der Erdboden, auf dem sie sind.

22 Und ich werde an selbigem Tage das Land Gosen aussondern, in welchem mein Volk weilt, daß daselbst keine Hundsfliegen seien, auf daß du wissest, daß ich, Jehova, in der Mitte des Landes bin.

23 Und ich werde eine Scheidung setzen zwischen meinem Volke und deinem Volke; morgen wird dieses Zeichen geschehen.

24 Und Jehova tat also; und es kamen Hundsfliegen in Menge in das Haus des Pharao und in die Häuser seiner Knechte; und im ganzen Lande Ägypten wurde das Land von den Hundsfliegen verderbt.

25 Und der Pharao rief Mose und Aaron und sprach: Gehet hin und opfert eurem Gott in dem Lande.

26 Und Mose sprach: Es geziemt sich nicht, also zu tun; denn wir würden Jehova, unserem Gott, der Ägypter Greuel opfern; siehe, opferten wir der Ägypter Greuel vor ihren Augen, würden sie uns nicht steinigen?

27 Drei Tagereisen weit wollen wir in die Wüste ziehen und Jehova, unserem Gott, opfern, so wie er zu uns geredet hat.

28 Und der Pharao sprach: Ich will euch ziehen lassen, daß ihr Jehova, eurem Gott, in der Wüste opfert; nur entfernet euch nicht so weit! Flehet für mich!

29 Da sprach Mose: Siehe, ich gehe von dir hinaus und will zu Jehova flehen; und morgen werden die Hundsfliegen von dem Pharao weichen, von seinen Knechten und von seinem Volke; nur handle der Pharao ferner nicht betrüglich, daß er das Volk nicht ziehen lasse, um Jehova zu opfern.

30 Und Mose ging von dem Pharao hinaus und flehte zu Jehova.

31 Und Jehova tat nach dem Worte Moses, und die Hundsfliegen wichen von dem Pharao, von seinen Knechten und von seinem Volke; nicht eine blieb übrig.

32 Aber der Pharao verstockte sein Herz auch dieses Mal und ließ das Volk nicht ziehen.

3762. And went to the land of the sons of the east. That this signifies to the truths of love (that is, elevation thereto) is evident from the signification of the “land of the sons of the east.” That Aram, or Syria, was called the “land of the sons of the east,” is evident, because it was thither that Jacob betook himself (see n. 3249). That by “Syria” in general are signified the knowledges of good, was shown above (n. 1232, 1234); but specifically, by “Aram-naharaim” (that is, “Syria of the rivers”) are signified the knowledges of truth (n. 3051, 3664). In this case however it is not said that he went “to Aram,” or “Syria,” but “to the land of the sons of the east,” in order to signify what is treated of in this chapter throughout, namely, an ascent to the truths of love. Those truths are called the truths of love which have been elsewhere termed celestial truths, for they are knowledges that relate to charity toward the neighbor and love to the Lord; in the supreme sense, in which the Lord is treated of, they are the truths of Divine love.

[2] These truths, that relate to charity toward the neighbor and to love to the Lord, must be learned before it is possible for a man to be regenerated; and must also be acknowledged and believed; and insofar as they are acknowledged, believed, and ingrafted in the life, so far the man is regenerated, and insofar they are at the same time implanted in the man’s natural, in which they are as in their own ground. They are first implanted therein through instruction by parents and teachers; next from the Word of the Lord; and afterwards through the man’s own reflection about them; but by these means they are merely stored up in the memory of the natural man, being classed among the knowledges therein, but still not acknowledged, believed, and ingrafted, unless the life is in accordance with them; for in this case the man comes into affection, and insofar as he comes into affection from life, so far these truths are implanted in his natural as in their ground. The truths which are not thus implanted are indeed with the man, but are merely in his memory as a matter of mere knowledge or history, which serves no other purpose than to be talked about and made the means of getting a reputation which is to serve for the acquisition of riches and honors. But in this case these truths are not implanted.

[3] That by the “land of the sons of the east” are signified the truths of love, thus the knowledges of truth which tend to good, may be seen from the signification of “sons,” as being truths (see n. 489, 491, 533, 1147, 2623); and from the signification of the “east,” as being love (n. 101, 1250, 3249). Their “land” is the ground in which they are. That the “sons of the east” are those who are in the knowledges of truth and good, and consequently in the truths of love, may be seen also from other passages in the Word. As in the first book of Kings:

The wisdom of Solomon was multiplied more than the wisdom of all the sons of the east, and than all the wisdom of the Egyptians (1 Kings:4:30); where by the “wisdom of the sons of the east” are signified the interior knowledges of truth and good, thus those who are in them;” but by the “wisdom of the Egyptians” is signified the memory-knowledge of the same, which is in a lower degree. (That by the “Egyptians” are signified memory-knowledges in general, may be seen n 1164-1165 . 1164, 1165, 1462.)

[4] In Jeremiah:

Thus saith Jehovah, Arise ye, go up against Kedar, lay waste the sons of the east. Their tents and their flocks they shall take; they shall take their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels (Jeremiah 49:28-29).

That by the “sons of the east” are here meant those who are in the knowledges of good and truth, is evident from the fact that they were to take their tents and flocks, also their curtains and all their vessels, and likewise their camels; for by “tents” are signified the holy things of good (n. 414, 1102, 2145, 2152, 3312); by “flocks,” the goods of charity (n. 343, 2566); by “curtains,” holy truths (n. 2576, 3478); by “vessels,” truths of faith and memory-knowledges (n. 3068, 3079); by “camels,” memory-knowledges in general (n. 3048, 3071, 3143, 3145). Thus by the “sons of the east” are signified those who are in these things, that is, who are in the knowledges of good and truth.

[5] That the wise men from the east who came to Jesus at His birth were of those who were called the “sons of the east,” is evident from the fact that they were in the knowledge that the Lord was to be born, and that they knew of His advent by a star which appeared to them in the east, concerning which things we read in Matthew:

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, Where is He that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him (Matthew 2:1-2

That from ancient times such a prophetic knowledge had existed among the sons of the east, who were of Syria, is evident from Balaam’s prophecy concerning the Lord’s advent, in Moses:

I see Him, but not now; I behold Him, but not nigh there shall arise a star out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise up out of Israel (Numbers 24:17).

That Balaam was from the land of the sons of the east, that is, from Syria, is evident from these words:

Balaam uttered his enunciation and said, Balak hath brought me from Syria, out of the mountains of the east (Numbers 23:7).

Those wise men who came to Jesus at His birth are called magi, 1 but wise men were so called at that time, as is evident from many passages; such as Genesis 41:8; Exodus 7:11; Daniel 2:27; 4:6-7; 1 Kings 4:30; and from the Prophets throughout.

[6] That in the opposite sense the “sons of the east” signify the knowledges of evil and falsity, thus those who are in them, is evident in Isaiah:

The envy of Ephraim shall depart, and the enemies of Judah shall be cut off; they shall fly on the shoulder of the Philistines toward the sea; and together shall they spoil the sons of the east (Isaiah 11:13-14).

In Ezekiel:

Against the sons of Ammon. Behold I have delivered thee to the sons of the east for a possession, and they shall set their ordinances in thee (Ezekiel 25:3-4).

And in the book of Judges:

When Israel sowed, Midian came up, and Amalek, and the sons of the east; they came up against him (Judg. 6:3).

“Midian” denotes those who are in falsity because not in the good of life (n. 3242); “Amalek,” those who are in falsities with which they assault truths (n. 1679); the “sons of the east,” those who are in the knowledges of falsity.

489. That by “sons and daughters” are signified the truths and goods which they had a perception of, and indeed by “sons” truths, and by “daughters” goods, is evident from many passages in the Prophets; for in the Word, as also in olden time, the conceptions and births of the church are called “sons and daughters” as in Isaiah:

The Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising; lift up thine eyes round about and see; all they gather themselves together and come to thee; thy sons shall come from far, and thy daughters shall be nursed at thy side; then thou shalt see and flow together, and thy heart shall be amazed, and shall be enlarged (Isaiah 60:3-5),

in which passage “sons” signify truths, and “daughters” goods.

[2] In David:

Deliver me and rescue me from the hand of the sons of the stranger, whose mouth speaketh vanity; that our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth, that our daughters may be as corner-stones hewn in the form of a temple (Psalms 44:11-12),

where the “sons of the stranger” signify spurious truths, or falsities; “our sons” signify doctrinals of truth; “our daughters” doctrinals of good.

[3] In Isaiah:

I will say to the north, Give up, and to the south, Keep not back; bring My sons from far, and My daughters from the ends of the earth; bring forth the blind people, and they shall have eyes; the deaf, and they shall have ears (Isaiah 43:6, 8),

in which passage “sons” signify truths; “daughters” goods; the “blind” those who would see truths; and the “deaf” those who would obey them.

[4] In Jeremiah:

Shame hath devoured the labor of our fathers from our youth; their flocks, their herds, their sons, and their daughters (Jeremiah 3:24),

where “sons” and “daughters” signify truths and goods. That “children” and “sons” signify truths, is plain from Isaiah: Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale; for when he shall see his children the work of My hands in the midst of him, they shall sanctify My name, and shall sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel; they also that erred in spirit shall know understanding (Isaiah 29:22-24,

where the “Holy One of Jacob, the God of Israel” signifies the Lord; “children” signify the regenerate, who have the understanding of good and truth, as is indeed explained.

[5] Again:

Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear, for more are the sons of the desolate than the sons of the married wife (Isaiah 54:1),

where the “sons of the desolate” signify the truths of the primitive Church, or that of the Gentiles; the “sons of the married wife” the truths of the Jewish Church.

[6] In, Jeremiah:

My tent is laid waste and all My cords are plucked out; My sons are gone forth of Me, and are not (Jeremiah 10:20),

where “sons” signify truths. Again:

His sons shall be as aforetime, and their congregation shall be established before Me (Jeremiah 30:20),

where “sons” signify the truths of the Ancient Church.

In Zechariah:

I will stir up thy sons, O Zion, with thy sons, O Javan, and make thee as the sword of a mighty man (Zechariah 9:13),

signifying the truths of the faith of love.
