2685. En s'éloignant d'environ une portée d'arc, signifie l'état en tant qu'il s'éloignait de la doctrine du vrai. On le voit par la signification de s'éloigner, en ce que c'est être absent ; et par la signification de l'arc, en ce qu'il est la doctrine du vrai, ainsi qu'il va être expliqué ; une portée signifie qu'il était éloigné autant que possible, comme autant que le trait peut être lancé par l'arc ; ici, il est dit une portée d'arc, parce que l'arc se dit de l'homme spirituel, et qu'Ismaël fut un tireur d'arc, ainsi qu'il est dit de lui, dans le Vers. 20 :

« Et il habita dans le désert, et il fut tireur d'arc. »

9662. 'And you shall make bars from shittim wood' means the power of the truth springing from good. This is clear from the meaning of 'bars' or 'poles' as the power which truth from good possesses, dealt with in 9496; and from the meaning of 'shittim wood' as the good of merit, which is the Lord's alone, dealt with in 9472, 9486, this good being the one and only good that reigns in heaven, see 9486, and therefore the source of the power that truths possess.
