1030. Verses 1-2. And there came one of the seven angels that had the seven vials and spoke with me, saying unto me, Come, I will show thee the judgment of the great harlot that sitteth upon many waters, with whom the kings of the earth committed whoredom; and they that dwell on the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her whoredom.

1. "And there came one of the seven angels that had the seven vials and spoke with me" signifies a manifestation of the state of the church with the Papists (n. 1031); "saying unto me, Come, I will show thee the judgment of the great harlot," signifies the religious persuasion of those in whom all the good and truth of the church has been adulterated and profaned (n. 1032); "that sitteth upon many waters," signifies that has dominion over all things of the Word, and thus over the holy things of the church (n. 1033).

2. "With whom the kings of the earth committed whoredom," signifies that it has falsified all the truths of the church (n. 1034); "and they that dwell on the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her whoredom," signifies that from falsifications those who are of the church have become insane (n. 1035).

Aux excrétions impures correspondent aussi d'autres Esprits, à savoir, ceux qui dans le monde ont été tenaces dans leur vengeance ; ceux-ci m'ont apparu en avant vers la gauche ; à ces excrétions impures correspondent encore ceux qui réduisent les spirituels à des terrestres impurs ; il survint même de ces Esprits, et ils apportaient avec eux des pensées ordurières, d'après lesquelles ils proféraient même des obscénités ; puis aussi ils tournaient les choses pures en impures et les changeaient en obscénités ; plusieurs de ce genre avaient été de la classe la plus basse, et d'autres qui dans le monde avaient été dans les dignités ; ceux-ci, à la vérité, dans la vie du corps, n'avaient pas parlé ainsi dans leurs sociétés, mais toujours est-il qu'ils avaient pensé ainsi, car ils avaient été retenus de parler comme ils pensaient, afin de ne pas tomber par là dans l'infamie et de ne pas perdre amis, profits et honneurs ; mais néanmoins avec leurs semblables, quand ils étaient libres, leur langage avait été comme celui de la classe la plus basse, et encore plus sale, parce qu'ils étaient doués d'une certaine faculté intellectuelle, dont ils abusaient pour souiller même les choses saintes de la Parole et de la doctrine.
