Studie

   

1 Alors Moïse et les enfants d'Israël chantèrent ce cantique à l'Eternel. Ils dirent: Je chanterai à l'Eternel, car il a fait éclater sa gloire; Il a précipité dans la mer le cheval et son cavalier.

2 L'Eternel est ma force et le sujet de mes louanges; C'est lui qui m'a sauvé. Il est mon Dieu: je le célèbrerai; Il est le Dieu de mon père: je l'exalterai.

3 L'Eternel est un vaillant guerrier; L'Eternel est son nom.

4 Il a lancé dans la mer les chars de Pharaon et son armée; Ses combattants d'élite ont été engloutis dans la mer Rouge.

5 Les flots les ont couverts: Ils sont descendus au fond des eaux, comme une pierre.

6 Ta droite, ô Eternel! a signalé sa force; Ta droite, ô Eternel! a écrasé l'ennemi.

7 Par la grandeur de ta majesté Tu renverses tes adversaires; Tu déchaînes ta colère: Elle les consume comme du chaume.

8 Au souffle de tes narines, les eaux se sont amoncelées, Les courants se sont dressés comme une muraille, Les flots se sont durcis au milieu de la mer.

9 L'ennemi disait: Je poursuivrai, j'atteindrai, Je partagerai le butin; Ma vengeance sera assouvie, Je tirerai l'épée, ma main les détruira.

10 Tu as soufflé de ton haleine: La mer les a couverts; Ils se sont enfoncés comme du plomb, Dans la profondeur des eaux.

11 Qui est comme toi parmi les dieux, ô Eternel? Qui est comme toi magnifique en sainteté, Digne de louanges, Opérant des prodiges?

12 Tu as étendu ta droite: La terre les a engloutis.

13 Par ta miséricorde tu as conduit, Tu as délivré ce peuple; Par ta puissance tu le diriges Vers la demeure de ta sainteté.

14 Les peuples l'apprennent, et ils tremblent: La terreur s'empare des Philistins;

15 Les chefs d'Edom s'épouvantent; Un tremblement saisit les guerriers de Moab; Tous les habitants de Canaan tombent en défaillance.

16 La crainte et la frayeur les surprendront; Par la grandeur de ton bras Ils deviendront muets comme une pierre, Jusqu'à ce que ton peuple soit passé, ô Eternel! Jusqu'à ce qu'il soit passé, Le peuple que tu as acquis.

17 Tu les amèneras et tu les établiras sur la montagne de ton héritage, Au lieu que tu as préparé pour ta demeure, ô Eternel! Au sanctuaire, Seigneur! que tes mains ont fondé.

18 L'Eternel régnera éternellement et à toujours.

19 Car les chevaux de Pharaon, ses chars et ses cavaliers sont entrés dans la mer, Et l'Eternel a ramené sur eux les eaux de la mer; Mais les enfants d'Israël ont marché à sec au milieu de la mer.

20 Marie, la prophétesse, soeur d'Aaron, prit à sa main un tambourin, et toutes les femmes vinrent après elle, avec des tambourins et en dansant.

21 Marie répondait aux enfants d'Israël: Chantez à l'Eternel, car il a fait éclater sa gloire; Il a précipité dans la mer le cheval et son cavalier.

22 Moïse fit partir Israël de la mer Rouge. Ils prirent la direction du désert de Schur; et, après trois journées de marche dans le désert, ils ne trouvèrent point d'eau.

23 Ils arrivèrent à Mara; mais ils ne purent pas boire l'eau de Mara parce qu'elle était amère. C'est pourquoi ce lieu fut appelé Mara.

24 Le peuple murmura contre Moïse, en disant: Que boirons-nous?

25 Moïse cria à l'Eternel; et l'Eternel lui indiqua un bois, qu'il jeta dans l'eau. Et l'eau devint douce. Ce fut là que l'Eternel donna au peuple des lois et des ordonnances, et ce fut là qu'il le mit à l'épreuve.

26 Il dit: Si tu écoutes attentivement la voix de l'Eternel, ton Dieu, si tu fais ce qui est droit à ses yeux, si tu prêtes l'oreille à ses commandements, et si tu observes toutes ses lois, je ne te frapperai d'aucune des maladies dont j'ai frappé les Egyptiens; car je suis l'Eternel, qui te guérit.

27 Ils arrivèrent à Elim, où il y avait douze sources d'eau et soixante-dix palmiers. Ils campèrent là, près de l'eau.

521. And many men died of the waters. - This signifies that all who were of such a character perished by means of the falsities into which the truths of the Word were changed, is evident from the signification of many in the Word, which are all who are of such a nature and from the signification of dying, as denoting to perish as to spiritual life, and to be damned (concerning this see n. 78, 186, 383, 487); and from the signification of waters, as denoting falsities, in this case the falsities of evil, because they became wormwood. For all spiritual life, which is also called life in the Word, and life eternal, comes to man by means of truths, and all spiritual death, which is damnation, comes upon him through the falsities of evil, and especially the falsities of evil, into which he converts the truths of the Word. The meaning of many men died of the waters, because they were made bitter, is therefore evident from these things.

78. As dead. That this signifies the failing of his own life, is evident from the signification of as dead, when the Divine presence with man is treated of, as being the failing of one's own life. For a man's own life is that into which he is born, which in itself is nothing but evil, for it is altogether inverted, regarding only itself and the world, and therefore turning itself backwards from God and from heaven. The life which is not man's own, is that into which he is led when he is regenerated by the Lord; and when he comes into this life, he looks to God and heaven in the first place, and himself and the world in the second. This life flows into man when the Lord is present; hence it is clear, that, so far as it flows in, so far there is effected a turning of the life; this turning, when it is effected suddenly, causes man to appear to himself as dead; hence it is that by these words is signified the failing of his own life. But these two states cannot be described to the apprehension; they are different also with man from what they are with a spirit, and they differ altogether with the evil and with the good.

[2] It is impossible for man to live in the body in the presence of the Divine; and they who do live are surrounded with a column of angels, which moderates the Divine influx; for the body of no man whatever is capable of receiving of the Divine, therefore it dies and is cast off. That man cannot live in the body in the presence of the Divine, is evident from the words of the Lord to Moses, "Thou canst not see my face; for there shall no man see me, and live" (Exodus 33:20); therefore Moses, because he desired to see Him, was placed in the hole of a rock, and covered until the Lord had passed by. It was known also to the ancients that man could not see God and live, as is evident from the book of Judges: "Manoah said unto his wife, Dying we shall die, because we have seen God" (13:22).

This was also testified among the sons of Israel, when the Lord was seen from Mount Sinai, concerning which it is thus written in Moses:

"Be ready against the third day; for the third day Jehovah will come down in the sight of all the people upon Mount Sinai. And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves that ye go not up into the mountain, or touch the border of it; whosoever toucheth the mountain, dying he shall die;" and because terror seized upon them, they said to Moses, "Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die" (Exodus 19:11, 12; 20:19).

(That by Mount Sinai is signified heaven, where the Lord is, and that by touching is signified to communicate, to transfer, and to receive, and that for this reason it was forbidden to touch the border of that mountain, may be seen in the explanation of that chapter in Arcana Coelestia.)

[3] The reason why Jehovah was seen by many, as recorded in the Word, was, that they were at the time surrounded with a column of spirits, and thus preserved, as said above; thus also the Lord has been oftentimes seen by me. But the state of spirits before the Divine presence differs from the state of man; spirits cannot die; therefore, if they are evil, they undergo a spiritual death at the Divine presence, the nature of which death will be presently described; but those who are good, are taken to societies, where the sphere of the Divine presence is tempered and accommodated to reception. This is why there are three heavens, and in each heaven many societies, and those who are in the higher heavens are nearer to the Lord, and those who are in the lower are more remote from Him (concerning this see what is said in the work, Heaven and Hell 20-28, 29-40, 41-50, 206-209). What the spiritual death is which evil spirits undergo at the Divine presence, shall be briefly stated.

[4] Spiritual death is an aversion and removal from the Lord; but, when evil spirits who are not yet vastated, that is, determined to their ruling love, enter any angelic society, then, because the Divine of the Lord is there present, they are direfully tortured, and not only avert themselves, but also cast themselves into the deep, where no light from heaven enters; some into dark caverns of rocks; in a word, into the hells (concerning this see what is shown in the work, Heaven and Hell 54, 400, 410, 525, 527). This aversion and removal from the Lord is called spiritual death; the spiritual of heaven is also dead with them.
