1 Silloin Joosef ei voinut kauemmin hillitä itseään kaikkien niiden nähden, jotka seisoivat hänen ympärillään. Hän huusi: "Antakaa kaikkien mennä pois minun luotani!" Niin ei ollut ketään saapuvilla, kun Joosef ilmaisi itsensä veljilleen.

2 Ja hän purskahti ääneensä itkemään, niin että egyptiläiset ja faraon hoviväki sen kuulivat.

3 Ja Joosef sanoi veljilleen: "Minä olen Joosef. Vieläkö minun isäni elää?" Mutta hänen veljensä eivät voineet vastata hänelle, niin hämmästyksissään he olivat hänen edessään.

4 Mutta Joosef sanoi veljilleen: "Tulkaa tänne luokseni". Ja he tulivat. Niin hän sanoi: "Minä olen Joosef, teidän veljenne, jonka myitte Egyptiin.

5 Mutta älkää nyt olko murheissanne älkääkä pahoitelko sitä, että olette myyneet minut tänne, sillä Jumala on minut lähettänyt teidän edellänne pitääkseen teidät hengissä.

6 Kaksi vuotta on nyt nälänhätä ollut maassa, ja vielä on jäljellä viisi vuotta, joina ei kynnetä eikä eloa korjata.

7 Niin Jumala lähetti minut teidän edellänne säilyttääkseen teille jälkeläisiä maan päällä ja pitääkseen teidät hengissä, pelastukseksi monille.

8 Ette siis te ole lähettäneet minua tänne, vaan Jumala; hän asetti minut faraon neuvonantajaksi ja koko hänen hovinsa herraksi ja koko Egyptin maan valtiaaksi.

9 Menkää, rientäkää minun isäni tykö ja sanokaa hänelle: 'Näin sanoo poikasi Joosef: Jumala on asettanut minut koko Egyptin herraksi, tule luokseni, älä viivyttele!

10 Sinä saat asettua Goosenin maakuntaan ja olla minun läheisyydessäni, sinä ja sinun lapsesi ja lastesi lapset, pikkukarjasi ja raavaskarjasi, kaikki, mitä sinulla on.

11 Minä elätän sinua siellä-vielä on näet viisi nälkävuotta-niin ettet sinä eikä sinun perheesi eikä kukaan omaisistasi ole sortuva puutteeseen.'

12 Te näette omin silmin, ja myöskin veljeni Benjamin näkee, että minä itse teille puhun.

13 Kertokaa siis isällenne kaikesta siitä kunniasta, joka on tullut minun osakseni Egyptissä, ja kaikesta, mitä olette nähneet, ja rientäkää ja tuokaa isäni tänne."

14 Ja hän lankesi veljensä Benjaminin kaulaan ja itki, ja myöskin Benjamin itki hänen kaulassaan.

15 Ja hän suuteli kaikkia veljiään ja itki heidän rinnoillaan. Senjälkeen hänen veljensä puhelivat hänen kanssaan.

16 Kun sanoma siitä, että Joosefin veljet olivat saapuneet, kuului faraon hoviin, oli se faraon ja kaikkien hänen palvelijainsa mieleen.

17 Ja farao sanoi Joosefille: "Sano veljillesi: 'Tehkää näin: sälyttäkää kuormat juhtainne selkään ja lähtekää kotiin Kanaanin maahan,

18 ottakaa isänne ja perheenne ja tulkaa minun luokseni, niin minä annan teille parasta, mitä Egyptissä on, ja te saatte syödä maan lihavuudesta'.

19 Ja näin sinun on käskettävä heitä: 'Tehkää näin: ottakaa itsellenne vaunuja Egyptin maasta lapsianne ja vaimojanne varten ja tuokaa isänne ja tulkaa.

20 Älkää surko taloustavaroitanne, sillä mitä parasta on koko Egyptin maassa, se on oleva teidän omanne.'"

21 Israelin pojat tekivät niin, ja Joosef antoi heille vaunuja faraon käskyn mukaan sekä evästä matkaa varten.

22 Hän antoi kullekin heistä juhlapuvun, mutta Benjaminille hän antoi kolmesataa hopeasekeliä sekä viisi juhlapukua.

23 Samoin hän lähetti isälleen lahjaksi kymmenen aasia, jotka olivat kuormitetut Egyptin parhaimmilla tavaroilla, ja kymmenen aasintammaa, jotka kantoivat viljaa ja leipää sekä eväitä hänen isälleen matkaa varten.

24 Sitten hän päästi veljensä menemään ja sanoi heille: "Älkää riidelkö matkalla".

25 Niin he lähtivät Egyptistä ja tulivat isänsä Jaakobin luo Kanaanin maahan.

26 Ja he kertoivat hänelle ja sanoivat: "Joosef on vielä elossa ja on koko Egyptin maan valtias". Mutta hänen sydämensä pysyi kylmänä, sillä hän ei uskonut heitä.

27 Niin he kertoivat hänelle kaiken, mitä Joosef oli heille puhunut. Ja kun hän näki vaunut, jotka Joosef oli lähettänyt häntä tuomaan, niin elpyi heidän isänsä Jaakobin henki.

28 Ja Israel sanoi: "Nyt on minulla kyllin; poikani Joosef elää vielä, minä menen häntä katsomaan, ennenkuin kuolen".

5962. And he sent his brethren away, and they departed. That this signifies concealment, is evident from the signification of “sending away,” as being to remove from himself, consequently to be no more present with them as before; and from the signification of “going” or “departing,” as being to live, also to live more remotely, and also to leave (see n. 3335, 3416, 3690, 4882, 5493, 5696); thus it denotes to be concealed. That removal from the internal celestial and thus the concealment of it, is now treated of, is evident from the things which follow in their internal sense.

[2] He who does not know how the case is with the state of life of spirits, and of the angels in the heavens, cannot know why the concealment of truth and of good should now be treated of, seeing that just before they had been in the light of these. In heaven this state is that spirits and angels have their morning, midday, and evening, also twilight, and again morning, and so on. It is their morning when the Lord is present and blesses them with manifest happiness: they are then in the perception of good. It is their midday when they are in the light of truths; and it is their evening when they are removed therefrom, and then it appears to them that the Lord is more remote and is hidden from them. All who are in heaven undergo and pass through these alternations, and cannot otherwise be continually perfected, for thereby they have relatives, and from the relatives a more perfect conception, since they thereby know what is not happy, because they thereby know what is not good and what is not true.

[3] It is worthy of admiration that to eternity one state is never exactly like another, and also that one spirit and angel does not pass through the like changes of state as another, for the reason that one is not exactly like another in respect to good and truth; just as neither is one man exactly like another in the face. Nevertheless out of these varieties the Lord makes a one. It is a general canon that everyone that has any quality comes forth from various things which are reduced into such unanimity that by agreement of harmony they all appear as a one. In the heavens the unity thus formed, or union, is effected through love and charity (see also n. 3241, 3267, 3744, 3745, 3986, 4005, 4149, 4598).

[4] The concealment which is signified by “Joseph’s sending his brethren away and their departing,” is called in the Word “evening,” and occurs with the angels at the times when they do not perceive the Lord to be present; for there is in heaven a continual perception of the Lord. When they are in a state of non-perception they are not then affected with good, neither do they see truth, as before; this troubles them, but shortly afterward the dawn comes, and so the morning.

4005. And he removed that day the he-goats that were party-colored and spotted. That this signifies that those truths of good were separated that were scattered over and mingled with the evils and falsities that were proper to the good signified by “Laban,” is evident from the signification of “removing,” as being to separate; and from the signification of “he-goats,” as being the truths of good (concerning which below); and from the signification of “party-colored,” as being things scattered over and mingled with evils (concerning which also in what follows); and from the signification of “spotted,” as being things that are scattered over and mingled with falsities (concerning which above). “He-goats” are here mentioned, and then “she-goats,” for the reason that “he-goats” [capri] signify the truths of good; and “she-goats,” the goods of truth; the difference between which is described above (n. 3995).

[2] An accurate distinction is made in the Word between the males and the females, as is evident from the sacrifices and burnt-offerings, in relation to which a specific command was given as to what should be offered, whether a he-lamb or a she-lamb, whether a she-goat or a he-goat, whether a sheep or a ram, and so on; from all which it may be seen that one thing was signified by the male, and another by the female. By the “male” in general is signified truth; and by the “female” good. Here therefore by the “he-goats” are signified the truths of good; and by the “she-goats” presently mentioned, the goods that are adjoined to them. And as the difference between these is of such a nature, it is also said that he removed the party-colored he-goats, but not the speckled ones, as is said of the she-goats; for “party-colored” signifies truth scattered over and mingled with evils; whereas “speckled” signifies good scattered over and mingled with evils (see n. 3993). Truth mingled with evils is properly of the understanding, but good mingled with evils is properly of the will. This is the difference. That all these are from the good signified by “Laban” is evident, because they were from Laban’s flock; for by a “flock” in the Word is signified good and truth, or what is the same, those who are in good and truth, and who are therefore of the Lord’s church.

[3] This arcanum cannot be explained further, because it cannot become plain except to an apprehension instructed in truths and goods, and at the same time enlightened. For it must be known what the truths of good are, and what the goods that are from them; and also that from the one good here represented by Laban so many various things can be separated. They who have no knowledge of these subjects do not know that in every good there are innumerable things, so many in fact that they can scarcely be classified into general kinds by the most learned man. For there are goods that are procured by means of truths; there are truths born from these goods; and again goods procured by means of these truths. There are also truths born of goods, and this also in a series; there are goods that are mingled with evils; and truths that are mingled with falsities, as described above (n. 3993); and the minglings and temperings of these are so various and manifold as to exceed myriads of myriads; and they are also varied according to all the states of life; and the states of life are varied in general in accordance with the man’s age, and specifically in accordance with his affections of all kinds. From this it may in some measure be apprehended that from the good of Laban there could be separated so many various things; of which some were adjoined to the truths signified by the sons of Jacob; some were left behind; and from these others were derived. But as before said these things are of such a nature as not to fall into the understanding unless it is instructed and at the same time enlightened.
