1 Alussa loi Jumala taivaan ja maan.

2 Ja maa oli autio ja tyhjä, ja pimeys oli syvyyden päällä, ja Jumalan Henki liikkui vetten päällä.

3 Ja Jumala sanoi: "Tulkoon valkeus". Ja valkeus tuli.

4 Ja Jumala näki, että valkeus oli hyvä; ja Jumala erotti valkeuden pimeydestä.

5 Ja Jumala kutsui valkeuden päiväksi, ja pimeyden hän kutsui yöksi. Ja tuli ehtoo, ja tuli aamu, ensimmäinen päivä.

6 Ja Jumala sanoi: "Tulkoon taivaanvahvuus vetten välille erottamaan vedet vesistä".

7 Ja Jumala teki taivaanvahvuuden ja erotti vedet, jotka olivat taivaanvahvuuden alla, vesistä, jotka olivat taivaanvahvuuden päällä; ja tapahtui niin.

8 Ja Jumala kutsui vahvuuden taivaaksi. Ja tuli ehtoo, ja tuli aamu, toinen päivä.

9 Ja Jumala sanoi: "Kokoontukoot vedet, jotka ovat taivaan alla, yhteen paikkaan, niin että kuiva tulee näkyviin". Ja tapahtui niin.

10 Ja Jumala kutsui kuivan maaksi, ja paikan, mihin vedet olivat kokoontuneet, hän kutsui mereksi. Ja Jumala näki, että se oli hyvä.

11 Ja Jumala sanoi: "Kasvakoon maa vihantaa, ruohoja, jotka tekevät siementä, ja hedelmäpuita, jotka lajiensa mukaan kantavat maan päällä hedelmää, jossa niiden siemen on". Ja tapahtui niin:

12 maa tuotti vihantaa, ruohoja, jotka tekivät siementä lajiensa mukaan, ja puita, jotka lajiensa mukaan kantoivat hedelmää, jossa niiden siemen oli. Ja Jumala näki, että se oli hyvä.

13 Ja tuli ehtoo, ja tuli aamu, kolmas päivä.

14 Ja Jumala sanoi: "Tulkoot valot taivaanvahvuuteen erottamaan päivää yöstä, ja olkoot ne merkkeinä osoittamassa aikoja, päiviä ja vuosia,

15 ja olkoot valoina taivaanvahvuudella paistamassa maan päälle". Ja tapahtui niin:

16 Jumala teki kaksi suurta valoa, suuremman valon hallitsemaan päivää ja pienemmän valon hallitsemaan yötä, sekä tähdet.

17 Ja Jumala pani ne taivaanvahvuuteen, paistamaan maan päälle

18 ja hallitsemaan päivää ja yötä ja erottamaan valon pimeästä. Ja Jumala näki, että se oli hyvä.

19 Ja tuli ehtoo, ja tuli aamu, neljäs päivä.

20 Ja Jumala sanoi: "Viliskööt vedet eläviä olentoja, ja lentäkööt linnut maan päällä, taivaanvahvuuden alla".

21 Ja Jumala loi suuret merieläimet ja kaikkinaiset liikkuvat, vesissä vilisevät elävät olennot, kunkin lajinsa mukaan, ja kaikkinaiset siivekkäät linnut, kunkin lajinsa mukaan. Ja Jumala näki, että se oli hyvä.

22 Ja Jumala siunasi ne sanoen: "Olkaa hedelmälliset ja lisääntykää ja täyttäkää meren vedet, ja linnut lisääntykööt maan päällä".

23 Ja tuli ehtoo, ja tuli aamu, viides päivä.

24 Ja Jumala sanoi: "Tuottakoon maa elävät olennot, kunkin lajinsa mukaan, karjaeläimet ja matelijat ja metsäeläimet, kunkin lajinsa mukaan". Ja tapahtui niin:

25 Jumala teki metsäeläimet, kunkin lajinsa mukaan, ja karjaeläimet, kunkin lajinsa mukaan, ja kaikki maan matelijat, kunkin lajinsa mukaan. Ja Jumala näki, että se oli hyvä.

26 Ja Jumala sanoi: "Tehkäämme ihminen kuvaksemme, kaltaiseksemme; ja vallitkoot he meren kalat ja taivaan linnut ja karjaeläimet ja koko maan ja kaikki matelijat, jotka maassa matelevat".

27 Ja Jumala loi ihmisen omaksi kuvaksensa, Jumalan kuvaksi hän hänet loi; mieheksi ja naiseksi hän loi heidät.

28 Ja Jumala siunasi heidät, ja Jumala sanoi heille: "Olkaa hedelmälliset ja lisääntykää ja täyttäkää maa ja tehkää se itsellenne alamaiseksi; ja vallitkaa meren kalat ja taivaan linnut ja kaikki maan päällä liikkuvat eläimet".

29 Ja Jumala sanoi: "Katso, minä annan teille kaikkinaiset siementä tekevät ruohot, joita kasvaa kaikkialla maan päällä, ja kaikki puut, joissa on siementä tekevä hedelmä; olkoot ne teille ravinnoksi.

30 Ja kaikille metsäeläimille ja kaikille taivaan linnuille ja kaikille, jotka maassa matelevat ja joissa on elävä henki, minä annan kaikkinaiset viheriät ruohot ravinnoksi". Ja tapahtui niin.

31 Ja Jumala katsoi kaikkea, mitä hän tehnyt oli, ja katso, se oli sangen hyvää. Ja tuli ehtoo, ja tuli aamu, kuudes päivä.

9336. By little and little I will drive him out from before thee. That this signifies a removal by degrees according to order, is evident from the signification of “by little and little,” as being by degrees, thus slowly; from the signification of “driving out,” when said of the falsities and evils which are signified by the nations of the land of Canaan, as being removal (of which just above, n. 9333). It is said “by degrees according to order,” because with the man who is being regenerated all things are disposed according to the order of heaven; for the regenerate man is a heaven in the least form, and therefore there is in him an order like that which is in heaven.

[2] When a man is born, in respect to hereditary evils he is a hell in the least form; and he also becomes a hell insofar as he takes the hereditary evils to himself, and adds to them things which are his own. Hence it is that both from birth and from actual life the order of his life is opposite to the order of heaven; for from his own a man loves himself more than the Lord, and the world more than heaven; when yet the life of heaven consists in loving the Lord above all things and the neighbor as oneself. From this it is evident that the former life, which is of hell, must be utterly destroyed (that is to say, the evils and falsities must be removed), in order that the new life, which is the life of heaven, may be implanted (see n. 4551, 4552, 4839, 6068). This cannot possibly be done hastily; for every evil that is rooted in with its falsities has a connection with all evils and their falsities; and such evils and falsities are innumerable, and their connection is so complex that it cannot be comprehended, not even by the angels, but only by the Lord. From this it is evident that the life of hell with a man cannot be destroyed suddenly; for if it were, he would straightway expire; and neither can the life of heaven be implanted suddenly, for if it were, he would also expire.

[3] There are thousands and thousands of arcana, of which scarcely a single one is known to man, whereby a man is led by the Lord out of the life of hell into the life of heaven. That this is so, has been given me to know from heaven, and it has likewise been confirmed by many things which have come to my notice. As man knows scarcely anything of these matters, many have fallen into errors about the liberation of man from evils and falsities (that is, the forgiveness of sins), believing that through mercy the life of hell in a man can be instantly turned into the life of heaven in him; when yet the whole act of regeneration is mercy, and none are regenerated except those who receive the mercy of the Lord in faith and life while in the world; according to the Lord’s words in John:

As many as received, to them gave He the power to be sons of God, even to them that believe in His name; who were born, not of bloods, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God (John 1:12-13);

what is meant by “bloods,” by “the will of the flesh,” and “the will of man,” also by being “born of God,” may be seen above (n. 5826).

[4] What is properly meant by removal from evils and falsities by degrees according to order, shall also be briefly stated. The Divine truth which proceeds from the Divine good of the Lord disposes all things into order in heaven; and therefore this Divine truth, in which there is good from the Lord, is order itself (n. 1728, 1919, 2258, 2447, 5703, 6338, 8700, 8988). According to this order all things in heaven come forth, and according to the same order they subsist; for to subsist is perpetually to come forth. In order therefore that heaven may come forth in a man it is necessary that he receive Divine truth in the good proceeding from the Lord. This can only be done by degrees according to an order similar to that by which the Lord sets heaven in order; for the case with a thing of the same nature is the same in what is small as in what is great. This successive setting in order is what is here meant by “order according to degrees.” From all this it is also evident that the case with the new creation of man-which is his regeneration-is the same as with the creation of heaven and earth. Wherefore also in the Word by “a new heaven and a new earth” is meant a new church (n. 1733, 1850, 2117, 2118, 3355, 4535); and also by the creation of heaven and earth in the first chapter of Genesis is meant the new creation of the celestial church, which is called “Man” (of which see in the explications there).

2447. From Jehovah out of heaven. That this signifies from the laws of order as to truth, because they separate themselves from good, cannot be seen except from the internal sense, by which there is disclosed how the case stands with punishments and damnations: that they in no wise come from Jehovah, that is, from the Lord, but from the man himself, the evil spirit, and the devil; and this from the laws of order as to truth, because they separate themselves from good.

[2] All order is from Jehovah, that is, from the Lord, and according to this order are all things directed by Him both in general and in particular, but in many different ways, to wit, from Will, from Good-pleasure, from Leave, and from Permission. The things that are from His will and good-pleasure are from the laws of order as to good, and so also are many of those which are from leave, and some of those which are from permission. But when a man separates himself from good he casts himself into the rule of the laws of order that are of truth separated from good, which are such that they condemn; for all truth condemns man and casts him down into hell; whereas the Lord from good, that is, from mercy, saves him, and uplifts him into heaven. From this we see that it is man himself who condemns himself.

[3] The things done from permission are mostly of this nature, as for example, that one devil punishes and torments another; and innumerable other things of this kind. These things are from the laws of order as to truth separated from good; for the devils could not otherwise be held in bonds, and withheld from rushing upon all the well disposed and good, and eternally destroying them. It is the prevention of this which is the good the Lord has in view. The case herein is similar to that which exists on earth, where a mild and clement king, who intends and does nothing but good, must needs suffer his laws to punish the evil and the wicked (although he punishes no one, but rather grieves that they are such that their evils must punish them), for otherwise he would leave his kingdom itself a prey to them; which would be the height of rigor and of unmercifulness.

[4] This shows that Jehovah in no wise caused it to rain brimstone and fire, that is in no wise condemned to hell; but that the men themselves who were in evil and thence in falsity did this, because they had separated themselves from good, and so had cast themselves into the rule of the laws of order that come from truth alone. From all which it follows that this is the internal sense of these words.

[5] That in the Word “evil,” “punishing,” “cursing,” “damnation,” and many other such things are attributed to Jehovah or the Lord, as here that He made it “rain brimstone and fire,” we read in Ezekiel:

I will contend against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him fire and brimstone (Ezekiel 38:22).

In Isaiah:

The breath of Jehovah like a stream of brimstone doth kindle it (Isaiah 30:33).

In David:

Jehovah shall rain upon the wicked snares, fire, and brimstone (Psalms 11:6).

Again:

There went up a smoke out of His nostrils, and fire out of His mouth, coals did burn from Him (Psalms 18:8).

In Jeremiah:

Lest My fury go forth like fire, and burn, and there is none to quench it (Jeremiah 21:12).

In Moses:

A fire is kindled in Mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell (Deuteronomy 32:22);

besides similar things in many other places. The reason why such things are attributed in the Word to Jehovah or the Lord has been explained in Part First (n. 223, 245, 589, 592, 696, 735, 1093, 1638, 1683, 1874); for such things are as far from coming from the Lord, as good is far from evil, or as heaven is from hell, or what is Divine from what is diabolical. Evil, hell, and the devil do these things; but by no means the Lord, who is mercy itself and good itself; but because He appears to do them, therefore for the reasons mentioned in the numbers cited, they are attributed to Him.

[6] From its being said in this verse that Jehovah caused it to rain from Jehovah out of heaven, it appears in the sense of the letter as if there were two; one on earth, and one in heaven; but the internal sense teaches how this also is to be understood, namely, that by the Jehovah first named is meant the Lord’s Divine Human and Holy proceeding (meant in this chapter by the “two men”) and by the Jehovah named in the second place is meant the Divine Itself that is called the “Father” (spoken of in the preceding chapter); and that this Trine is in the Lord, as He himself says in John:

He that hath seen Me hath seen the Father; believe Me, that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me (John 14:9-11).

And concerning the Holy proceeding, in the same:

The Comforter shall not speak from Himself but He shall take of Mine, and shall declare it unto you (John 16:13-15).

Thus Jehovah is one, although two are here named; two being named for the reason that all the laws of order are from the Lord’s Divine Itself, Divine Human, and Holy proceeding.
