1 Aga rahvas nurises ja see oli Issanda kõrvus paha. Kui Issand seda kuulis, siis ta viha süttis põlema: nende keskel süttis Issanda tuli ja põletas leeri äärt.

2 Siis rahvas kisendas Moosese poole. Mooses palus Issandat ja tuli kustus.

3 Sellele paigale pandi nimeks Tabeera, sellepärast et Issanda tuli oli põlenud nende keskel.

4 Aga segarahval, kes oli nende hulgas, tekkis himu, ja Iisraeli lapsed hakkasid ka jälle nutma ning ütlesid: 'Kes annaks meile liha süüa?

5 Meil on meeles kala, mida me sõime Egiptuses muidu, kurgid, melonid, laugud, sibulad ja küüslaugud.

6 Aga nüüd kuivetub meie hing, ei ole enam midagi kõigest sellest. Meie silme ees on ainult see manna!'

7 Manna oli nagu koriandri seeme, välimuselt otsekui pedolavaik.

8 Rahvas uitas ringi ja korjas, jahvatas käsikivil või tampis uhmris, keetis potis või valmistas sellest kooke. See maitses nagu õliga küpsetatud maiuspala.

9 Kui öösel langes kaste leeri peale, siis langes ka manna selle peale.

10 Ja Mooses kuulis rahvast nutvat oma suguvõsade kaupa, igaüks oma telgi ukse ees. Siis Issanda viha süttis väga põlema ja see oli Moosese silmis paha.

11 Ja Mooses ütles Issandale: 'Miks oled teinud paha oma sulasele? Miks ei ole ma leidnud armu sinu silma ees, et paned kogu selle rahva koormaks minu peale?

12 Kas olen mina kogu selle rahva pärast olnud lapseootel või olen mina tema sünnitanud, et sa ütled mulle: Kanna teda süles, nagu hoidja kannab imikut, maale, mille sa vandega tõotasid anda tema vanemaile?

13 Kus on mul liha anda kogu sellele rahvale? Sest nad nutavad mu ees, öeldes: Anna meile liha süüa!

14 Ei jaksa mina üksi kanda kogu seda rahvast, sest see on mulle liiga raske.

15 Kui sa tahad mind kohelda nõnda, siis parem tapa mind, kui ma leian armu su silmis, et ma ei näeks oma viletsust!'

16 Aga Issand ütles Moosesele: 'Kogu mulle seitsekümmend meest Iisraeli vanemaist, kellest sa tead, et nad on tõesti rahvavanemad ja ülevaatajad; too need kogudusetelgi juurde ja nad seisku seal koos sinuga!

17 Siis ma astun alla ja räägin seal sinuga, ja ma võtan sinu peal oleva Vaimu, ja panen nende peale, et nad koos sinuga kannaksid rahva koormat ja sul ei oleks vaja üksinda kanda.

18 Aga rahvale ütle: Pühitsege endid homseks, siis te saate liha süüa, sest te olete nutnud Issanda kõrva ees, öeldes: Kes annaks meile liha süüa? Egiptuses oli meil ju hea olla! Issand annab teile nüüd liha süüa.

19 Te ei söö seda mitte üks päev, ka mitte kaks päeva, viis päeva, kümme päeva ega kakskümmend päeva,

20 vaid terve kuu, kuni see tuleb teil ninast välja ja muutub teile vastikuks, sellepärast et te olete põlanud Issandat, kes on teie keskel, ja olete nutnud ta palge ees, öeldes: Miks tulime siis Egiptusest ära?'

21 Aga Mooses ütles: 'Kuussada tuhat jalameest on seda rahvast, kelle keskel ma olen, ja sina ütled: Ma annan neile liha süüa terveks kuuks!

22 Ons lambaid, kitsi ja veiseid tapmiseks, nõnda et neile jätkuks? Või tuleks neile koguda kõik mere kalad, et neile jätkuks?'

23 Aga Issand vastas Moosesele: 'Kas Issanda käsi on jäänud lühemaks? Nüüd sa saad näha, kas mu sõna sulle tõestub või mitte!'

24 Ja Mooses tuli välja ning andis rahvale edasi Issanda sõnad; ta kogus seitsekümmend meest rahva vanemaist ja pani need seisma ümber telgi.

25 Siis Issand astus alla pilve sees ja rääkis temaga ning võttis tema peal oleva Vaimu, ja pani nende seitsmekümne mehe peale, kes olid vanemad. Ja kui Vaim oli nende peal, siis nad rääkisid prohveti viisil, aga pärast seda mitte enam.

26 Kaks meest aga oli jäänud leeri, ühe nimi oli Eldad ja teise nimi Meedad; nendegi peal oli Vaim, sest nad olid üleskirjutatute hulgast, kuid nad ei olnud läinud telgi juurde, vaid nad rääkisid leeris prohveti viisil.

27 Siis jooksis üks poiss ja kuulutas Moosesele ning ütles: 'Eldad ja Meedad räägivad leeris prohveti viisil!'

28 Siis võttis sõna Joosua, Nuuni poeg, Moosese teener oma noorusest alates, ja ütles: 'Mooses, mu isand, keela neid!'

29 Aga Mooses vastas temale: 'Kas sa ägestud minu eest? Kes küll annaks, et kogu Issanda rahvas saaks prohveteiks, et Issand paneks oma Vaimu nende peale!'

30 Ja Mooses läks tagasi leeri, tema ja Iisraeli vanemad.

31 Siis tõusis tuul Issanda juurest ja ajas mere poolt vutte, paisates need üle leeri, päevateekond siit- ja päevateekond sealtpoolt ümber leeri, ligi kahe küünra kõrguselt üle maapinna.

8468. 'An omer a head' means the amount for each individual. This is clear from the meaning of 'an omer' as the sufficient amount, dealt with below; and from the meaning of 'a head' as for each person. The reason why 'an omer' means the sufficient amount is that it was the tenth part of an ephah, as is evident from the final verse of the present chapter; and 'ten' means what is complete, 3107, so that 'a tenth part' means the sufficient amount, at this point for each individual, meant by 'a head'. 'An omer' is mentioned in the present chapter alone; the term used elsewhere is 'a homer', which was a measure that held ten ephahs, and therefore meant what was complete, as in Hosea,

I acquired an adulterous woman for fifteen [shekels] of silver, and a homer of barley and half a homer of barley. Hosea 3:2.

Here 'an adulterous woman' is used to mean the house of Israel, in the spiritual sense the Church there. Her being acquired for the full price is meant by 'fifteen [shekels] of silver' and 'a homer of barley' - 'fifteen [shekels] of silver' having reference to truth and 'a homer of barley' to good.

[2] In Ezekiel,

You shall have just balances, and a just ephah, and a just bath. The ephah and the bath shall be of one measure, so that a tenth of a homer is offered for a bath, and a tenth of a homer for an ephah; your measure shall be after the homer. This is the offering which you shall offer: A sixth of an ephah from a homer of wheat, ... from the barley. And the fixed portion of oil, the bath for oil, shall be a tenth of a bath from a cor, which is ten baths to the homer; for ten baths are a homer. Ezekiel 45:10-11, 13-14.

This refers to a new earth or land and new temple, meaning the Lord's spiritual kingdom. Anyone may see that there will be no homer, ephah, bath, or cor there, and no wheat, barley, or oil either. From this it is clear that these objects mean the kinds of things that belong to that spiritual kingdom, which things, it is evident, are spiritual realities, that is, they are connected with either the good of charity or the truth of faith. 'Homer' has reference to good because it is a measure of wheat or barley, and so does 'ephah'; but 'bath' has reference to truth because it is a measure of wine. Yet being also a measure of oil, by which the good of love is meant, it says that a bath shall be the same part of a homer as an ephah is, which means in the spiritual sense that everything there will have a connection with good, and also that truth there will be good. It will also exist in full measure, for 'a homer' means what is complete.

[3] In Isaiah,

Many houses will be a ruination, large and beautiful ones, so that there is no inhabitant; for ten acres of vineyard will yield but one bath, and the sowing of a homer will yield an ephah. Isaiah 5:9-10.

Here 'ten acres' stands for complete and also for much, and so does 'a homer'; but 'a bath' and 'an ephah' stand for little. For when 'ten' means much, 'a tenth part' means little. In Moses,

If a man sanctifies to Jehovah part of a field of his possession, your valuation shall be according to its sowing; the sowing of a homer of barley [shall be valued] at fifty shekels of silver. Leviticus 27:16.

Here 'the sowing of a homer' and also 'fifty shekels' stand for the full or complete valuation. Since 'a homer' means what is complete, ten homers means at Numbers 11:32 what is in excess and superfluous.

1 They took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.

2 The whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness;

3 and the children of Israel said to them, "We wish that we had died by the hand of Yahweh in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots, when we ate our fill of bread, for you have brought us out into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger."

4 Then Yahweh said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from the sky for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law, or not.

5 It shall come to pass on the sixth day, that they shall prepare that which they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily."

6 Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, "At evening, then you shall know that Yahweh has brought you out from the land of Egypt;

7 and in the morning, then you shall see the glory of Yahweh; because he hears your murmurings against Yahweh. Who are we, that you murmur against us?"

8 Moses said, "Now Yahweh shall give you meat to eat in the evening, and in the morning bread to satisfy you; because Yahweh hears your murmurings which you murmur against him. And who are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against Yahweh."

9 Moses said to Aaron, "Tell all the congregation of the children of Israel, 'Come near before Yahweh, for he has heard your murmurings.'"

10 It happened, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and behold, the glory of Yahweh appeared in the cloud.

11 Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

12 "I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying, 'At evening you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread: and you shall know that I am Yahweh your God.'"

13 It happened at evening that quail came up and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew lay around the camp.

14 When the dew that lay had gone, behold, on the surface of the wilderness was a small round thing, small as the frost on the ground.

15 When the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, "What is it?" For they didn't know what it was. Moses said to them, "It is the bread which Yahweh has given you to eat."

16 This is the thing which Yahweh has commanded: "Gather of it everyone according to his eating; an omer a head, according to the number of your persons, you shall take it, every man for those who are in his tent."

17 The children of Israel did so, and gathered some more, some less.

18 When they measured it with an omer, he who gathered much had nothing over, and he who gathered little had no lack. They gathered every man according to his eating.

19 Moses said to them, "Let no one leave of it until the morning."

20 Notwithstanding they didn't listen to Moses, but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and became foul: and Moses was angry with them.

21 They gathered it morning by morning, everyone according to his eating. When the sun grew hot, it melted.

22 It happened that on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one, and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Moses.

23 He said to them, "This is that which Yahweh has spoken, 'Tomorrow is a solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to Yahweh. Bake that which you want to Bake, and boil that which you want to boil; and all that remains over lay up for yourselves to be kept until the morning.'"

24 They laid it up until the morning, as Moses asked, and it didn't become foul, neither was there any worm in it.

25 Moses said, "Eat that today, for today is a Sabbath to Yahweh. today you shall not find it in the field.

26 Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day is the Sabbath. In it there shall be none."

27 It happened on the seventh day, that some of the people went out to gather, and they found none.

28 Yahweh said to Moses, "How long do you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws?

29 Behold, because Yahweh has given you the Sabbath, therefore he gives you on the sixth day the bread of two days. Everyone stay in his place. Let no one go out of his place on the seventh day."

30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

31 The house of Israel called its name Manna, and it was like coriander seed, white; and its taste was like wafers with honey.

32 Moses said, "This is the thing which Yahweh has commanded, 'Let an omer-full of it be kept throughout your generations, that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you forth from the land of Egypt.'"

33 Moses said to Aaron, "Take a pot, and put an omer-full of manna in it, and lay it up before Yahweh, to be kept throughout your generations."

34 As Yahweh commanded Moses, so Aaron laid it up before the Testimony, to be kept.

35 The children of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land. They ate the manna until they came to the borders of the land of Canaan.

36 Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.
