In the mean time there arose a murmuring of the people against the Lord, as it were repining at their fatigue. And when the Lordheard it he was angry. And the fire of the Lord being kindled against them, devoured them that were at the uttermost part of the camp.
A 'thousand' means much, many, a countless number, a whole era of time, an abundance. When used in reference to the Lord, it actually means a number greater than that: In those cases it means what is infinite, what is truly without end.
