2370. 'Stand back' means their angry threats, that is, threats against the good that flows from charity. This is clear from the meaning of 'Lot' as the good that flows from charity, to whom, and concerning whom, these words were addressed. That they are angry threats is evident from these words themselves and from those that follow. It may also be evident that they embody the consideration that if he spoke about or commended that good any further they would utterly reject it, meant by 'stand back'.
