1 Derpå sagde HE EN til Moses: "Tilhug dig to Stentavler ligesom de forrige, så vil jeg på Tavlerne skrive de samme Ord, som stod på de forrige Tavler, du slog i Stykker.

2 Gør dig så rede til i Morgen, stig om Morgenen op på Sinaj Bjerg og stil dig hen og vent på mig der på Bjergets Top.

3 Ingen må følge med dig derop, og ingen må vise sig noget Sted på Bjerget, end ikke Småkvæg eller Hornkvæg må græsse i Nærheden af dette Bjerg."

4 Da tilhuggede han to Stentavler ligesom de forrige, og tidligt næste Morgen steg Moses op på Sinaj Bjerg, som Gud havde pålagt ham, og tog de to Stentavler med sig.

5 Da steg HE EN ned i Skyen; og Moses stillede sig hos ham der og påkaldte HE ENs Navn.

6 Og HE EN gik forbi ham og råbte: "HE EN, HE EN, Gud, som er barmhjertig og nådig, langmodig og rig på Miskundhed og Trofasthed,

7 som bevarer Miskundhed mod Tusinder, som tilgiver Brøde, Overtrædelse og Synd, men ikke lader den skyldige ustraffet, som straffer Fædres Brøde på Børn og Børnebørn, på dem i tredje og fjerde Led!"

8 Da bøjede Moses sig hastelig til Jorden, tilbad

9 og sagde: "Har jeg fundet Nåde for dine Øjne, Herre, så drage min Herre med i vor Midte; thi det er et halsstarrigt Folk. Men tilgiv vor Brøde og vor Synd og lad os være din Ejendom!"

10 Han sagde: "Se, jeg vil slutte en Pagt; i hele dit Folks Påsyn vil jeg gøre Undere, som aldrig før er sket nogensteds på Jorden og blandt noget Folkeslag, og hele det Folk, i hvis Midte du lever, skal Se HE ENs Værk; thi det, jeg vil udføre ved dig, er forfærdeligt.

11 Hold dig det efterrettelig, som jeg i Dag byder dig! Se, jeg vil drive Amoriterne, Kana'anæerne, Hetiterne, Perizziterne, Hivviterne og Jebusiterne bort foran dig!

12 Vogt dig vel for at slutte nogen Pagt med Indbyggerne i det Land, du kommer til, for at de ikke skal blive en Snare for dig, når de lever i din Midte.

13 Men I skal nedbryde deres Altre, sønderslå deres Stenstøtter og omhugge deres Asjerastøtter!

14 Thi du må ikke tilbede nogen anden Gud, thi "Nidkær" er HE ENs Navn, nidkær Gud er han.

15 Du må ikke slutte Pagt med Landets Indbyggere, og når de boler med deres Guder og ofrer til dem og man indbyder dig til at være med, må du ikke spise af deres Ofre;

16 og du må ikke af deres Døtre tage Hustruer til dine Sønner, så deres Døtre, når de boler med deres Guder, får dine Sønner til også at bole med dem.

17 Du må ikke gøre dig noget støbt Gudebillede.

18 Du skal lejre de usyrede Brøds Højtid; i syv Dage skal du spise usyret Brød, som jeg har pålagt dig, lå den fastsatte Tid i Abib Måned, thi i Abib Måned drog du ud af Ægypten.

19 Alt førstefødt tilhører mig; af dine Hjorde skal du ofre mig det førstefødte af Handyrene, både af Okset og småt Kvæg;

20 men de førstefødte Æsler skal du udløse med et Stykke småt Kvæg, og hvis du ikke udløser det, skal du sønderbryde Halsen derpå; alle dine førstefødte Sønner skal du udløse. Du må ikke stedes for mit Åsyn med tomme Hænder

21 I seks Dage må du arbejde, men på den syvende skal du hvile; i Pløje og Høsttiden skal du holde Hviledag.

22 Du skal fejre Ugehøjtid med Førstegrøden af Hvedehøsten og Frugthøsthøjtid ved Jævndøgnstide.

23 Tre Gange om Året skal alle at Mandkøn hos dig stedes for den Herre HE EN Israels Guds Åsyn.

24 Thi jeg vil drive Folkeslag bort foran dig og gøre dine Landemærker vide, og ingen skal attrå dit Land, medens du drager hen for at stedes for HE EN din Guds Åsyn tre Gange 01n Året.

25 Du må ikke ofre Blodet af mit offer sammen med syret Brød. Påskehøjtidens Offer må ikke gemmes til næste Morgen.

26 Det bedste af din Jords Førstegrøde skal du bringe til HE EN din Guds Hus. Du må ikke koge et Hid i dets Moders Mælk!"

27 Og HE EN sagde til Moses: "Skriv disse Ord op, thi på Grundlag af disse Ord slutter jeg Pagt med dig og Israel."

28 Og han blev der hos HE EN fyrretyve Dage og fyrretyve Nætter uden at spise eller drikke; og han skrev Pagtsordene, de ti Ord, på Tavlerne.

29 Da Moses steg ned fra Sinaj Bjerg med Vidnesbyrdets to Tavler i Hånden, vidste han ikke, at hans Ansigts Hud var kommet til at stråle, ved at han talede med ham.

30 Men Aron og alle Israeliterne så Moses, og se, hans Ansigts Hud strålede, og de turde ikke komme ham nær.

31 Men Moses kaldte på dem, og da vendte Aron og alle Menighedens Øverster tilbage til ham, og Moses talte til dem.

32 Derpå kom alle Israeliterne hen til ham, og han pålagde dem alt, hvad HE EN havde talet til ham på Sinaj Bjerg.

33 Men da Moses var færdig med at tale til dem, lagde han et Dække over sit Ansigt.

34 Hver Gang han derefter trådte frem for HE ENs Åsyn for at tale med ham, tog han Sløret af, indtil han kom ud igen; og når han kom ud, meddelte han Israeliterne, hvad der var blevet ham påbudt.

35 Da så Israeliterne, at Moses's Ansigts Hud strålede; og Moses lagde da Dækket over sit Ansigt, indtil han atter gik ind for at tale med ham.

10603. Hew thee two tables of stones like the former ones. That this signifies the external of the Word, of the church, and of worship, such as it was on account of that nation, is evident from the signification of the “tables of stones,” as being the external of the Word (see n. 10453, 10461). The external of the Word is the sense of its letter. That it also denotes the external of the church and of worship is because the church is from the Word, and also worship; for all the truth that is of faith and the good that is of love, which make the church and also worship, must be from the Word; consequently as there are in the Word an external and an internal, there are also an external and an internal in the church, and in worship. And from the signification of “hewing” them, when done by Moses, as being to make the external such on account of that nation (of which in what follows); and from the signification of “like the former ones,” as being in imitation, for the former ones were made by Jehovah, but these by Moses.

[2] That the former ones, made by Jehovah, were broken by Moses when he saw the worship by that nation of the golden calf as jehovah, 1 was of Providence, because the external of the Word, which is signified by the “two tables of stones,” could not be so written among that nation, which at heart was merely idolatrous. Hence it was that the former tables were broken, and that it is now said to Moses that he should hew others in imitation of the former ones. It is said “in imitation,” because the internal sense remained the same, and the external sense was changed. The internal sense is signified by Jehovah writing upon these tables the same words that were upon the former ones.

[3] That this subject may appear in clearer light, it may here be explained in what manner the external sense, or sense of the letter, was changed for the sake of that nation. On account of that nation, altars, burnt-offerings, sacrifices, meat-offerings and drink-offerings were commanded, and therefore in both the historic and the prophetic Word these things are mentioned as the most holy things of worship; when yet they were allowed merely because they were first instituted by Eber, and had been quite unknown in the ancient representative church (see n. 1128, 2180, 2818).

[4] It was on account of that nation also that there was Divine worship in Jerusalem alone, and that for this reason that city was esteemed holy, and was also called holy in both the historic and the prophetic Word. The reason was that that nation was at heart idolatrous, and therefore unless they had all come together unto that city at each feast, everyone in his own place would have worshiped some god of the Gentiles, or else a graven and molten image. On account of that nation also it was forbidden to have holy worship upon mountains and in groves, as had the ancients; which was done to prevent them from placing idols there, and worshiping the trees themselves.

[5] On account of that nation also a plurality of wives was permitted, a thing quite unknown in ancient times; and likewise the putting away of their wives for various causes. Consequently laws were enacted relating to such marriages and divorces, which otherwise would not have entered into the external of the Word. Wherefore this external is spoken of by the Lord as given by Moses; and as having been granted because of the hardness of their hearts (Matthew 19:8). On account of that nation mention is so often made of Jacob, and likewise of the twelve sons of Israel, as the only elect and heirs (as in Revelation 7:4-8, and in other places), although they were such as are described in the Song of Moses (Deuteronomy 32:15-43), and also in the prophets throughout, and by the Lord Himself. Not to mention other things whence comes the external of the Word on account of that nation.

[6] This is the external which is signified by the two tables hewn by Moses. That nevertheless within this external the Divine internal is not changed, is signified by Jehovah writing upon these tables the same words that were upon the former tables.

10453. And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, graven upon the tables. That this signifies that the external and the internal sense of the Word were from the Divine, and are Divine truth, is evident from the signification of “the tables,” as being the Word in the whole complex (of which just above, n. 10452), but here the external of the Word (of which in what follows); from the signification of “the work of God,” as being that it was from the Divine; from the signification of “the writing,” as being the internal of the Word (of which also below), consequently “the writing of God,” denotes the internal of the Word from the Divine; and from the signification of “graven upon the tables,” as being the internal above the external, thus within it.

[2] That “the tables” here signify the external of the Word, is because they are here distinguished from the writing, which denotes its internal. But when they are not distinguished from the writing, then by “the tables” is signified the internal and the external of the Word together, thus the Word in the whole complex (as above, n. 10452). The reason why they are here distinguished, is that the tables were broken, and yet the same words were afterward written by Jehovah upon other tables which were hewn out by Moses. The external of the Word is the sense of its letter. This sense of the letter is signified by “the tables” because this sense is like a table, or a plane, upon which the internal sense has been written.

[3] That the tables which were the work of God were broken by Moses when he saw the calf and the dances, and that by command of Jehovah other tables were hewn out by Moses, and on these were afterward written the same words, and thus that the tables were no longer the work of God, but the work of Moses, whereas the writing was still the writing of God, involves a secret as yet unknown. The secret is that the sense of the letter of the Word would have been different if the Word had been written among a different people, or if that people had not been such as it was. For the sense of the letter of the Word treats of that people, because the Word was written among them, as is plain from both the historic and the prophetic parts of the Word, and that people was in evil, because at heart it was idolatrous; and yet in order that the internal and the external sense might agree together, that people had to be lauded, and to be called the people of God, a holy nation, a peculiar possession; consequently the simple, who were to be instructed by the external sense of the Word, had to believe that that nation was such as it is called; as also that nation itself believes, and as also believe very many of the Christian world at this day. Moreover, also many things are present in the external sense of the Word, and make it, that were permitted them on account of the hardness of their hearts, such as those mentioned in Matthew 19:8, and other things also which are here passed by.

[4] As therefore the sense of the letter of the Word was made such for the sake of that people, therefore those tables which were the work of God were broken, and at the command of Jehovah others were hewn out by Moses. But whereas the same Divine holiness was still within, therefore the same words which had been written upon the former tables were written by Jehovah on the latter, as is plain from these words in Moses:

Jehovah said unto Moses, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, that I may write upon the tables the words that were on the first tables, which thou broke. And Jehovah wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten words (Exodus 34:1, 4 (Exodus 34:4), 28).

At that time Jehovah said unto me, Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first, and I will write on the tables the words that were on the first tables which thou broke. And Jehovah wrote on the tables, according to the first writing, the ten words, and Jehovah gave them unto me (Deuteronomy 10:1-4).

[5] That Jehovah did not acknowledge that people as His own people (although it was so said for the sake of the agreement of the internal sense with the external), but as the people of Moses, is evident in these passages:

Thy people have corrupted themselves, which thou madest to come up out of the land of Egypt. Go, lead the people unto the place I told thee (Exodus 32:7, 34).

Jehovah spoke unto Moses, Go up, thou and the people which thou hast made to come up out of the land of Egypt, unto the land of which I sware unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. And I will send an angel before thee; for I will not go up in the midst of thee, for thou art a stiff-necked people (Exodus 33:1-3).

[6] The like is signified by Moses being put in a cleft of the rock, and not being allowed to see the faces of Jehovah, but only the back parts (Exodus 33:22-23); and in like manner by Moses, when the skin of his face shone, putting a veil over his face when he spoke to the sons of Israel (Exodus 34:30-35). What the quality of that people was to be, is foretold by Jehovah to Abraham, when it was His will that his seed should inherit the land of Canaan, and it is said:

After Abraham had divided a heifer of three years old, and a she-goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, in the midst, which were for entering into a covenant, a deep sleep fell upon Abraham, and behold a terror of great darkness falling upon him. And when the sun was set, there was thick darkness; and behold a furnace of smoke, and a torch of fire that passed between those pieces (Genesis 15:9-10, 12, 17).
