1597. 'And Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain' means the external man dwelt in factual knowledge. This is clear from the representation of 'Lot' as the external man, and from the meaning of 'a city' or 'cities' as matters of doctrine, which in themselves are nothing else than facts when used in reference to the external man once this has been separated from the internal. That 'cities' means matters of doctrine, whether true or false, has been shown already in 402.
