"St. Peter Walking on the Water" by Allesandro Allori

The wind represents the Lord's divine power, and being afraid represents the over-awed feeling that comes when we are confronted with a potential move to a more exalted spiritual state. Here, then, we see the intellect (Peter, who represents true ideas springing from a desire for good) seeing the full power of the Lord's desire for good and feeling overwhelmed with a sense that it can't live up to what the Lord is. That lack of confidence is enough for the natural facts and ideas of those in the outskirts of the church – represented by the sea – to start pulling the intellect down. When Peter cries "Lord, save me," it represents a plea for true ideas that can keep the intellect from being immersed.
