1 Herra puhui Moosekselle sanoen:

2 "Sano israelilaisille, että he kääntyvät takaisin ja leiriytyvät Pii-Hahirotin kohdalle Migdolin ja meren välille; leiriytykää vastapäätä Baal-Sefonia meren rannalle.

3 Ja farao on ajatteleva, että israelilaiset ovat eksyneet maassa ja että erämaa on saartanut heidät.

4 Ja minä paadutan faraon sydämen, niin että hän ajaa heitä takaa; mutta minä näytän kunniani tuhoamalla faraon ja koko hänen sotajoukkonsa; ja niin egyptiläiset tulevat tietämään, että minä olen Herra." Ja he tekivät niin.

5 Kun Egyptin kuninkaalle ilmoitettiin, että kansa oli paennut, muuttui faraon ja hänen palvelijainsa mieli kansaa kohtaan, ja he sanoivat: "Mitä teimmekään, kun päästimme Israelin meitä palvelemasta!"

6 Ja hän valjastutti hevoset sotavaunujensa eteen ja otti väkensä mukaansa;

7 ja hän otti kuudetsadat valitut sotavaunut sekä kaikki muut Egyptin sotavaunut ynnä vaunusoturit niihin kaikkiin.

8 Sillä Herra paadutti faraon, Egyptin kuninkaan, sydämen, niin että hän lähti ajamaan takaa israelilaisia, vaikka israelilaiset olivat lähteneet matkaan voimallisen käden suojassa.

9 Ja egyptiläiset, kaikki faraon hevoset, sotavaunut ja ratsumiehet ja koko hänen sotajoukkonsa, ajoivat heitä takaa ja saavuttivat heidät leiriytyneinä meren rannalle, Pii-Hahirotin kohdalle, vastapäätä Baal-Sefonia.

10 Ja kun farao oli lähellä, nostivat israelilaiset silmänsä ja näkivät, että egyptiläiset olivat tulossa heidän jäljessänsä. Silloin israelilaiset peljästyivät kovin ja huusivat Herraa.

11 Ja he sanoivat Moosekselle: "Eikö Egyptissä ollut hautoja, kun toit meidät tänne erämaahan kuolemaan? Mitä teit meille, kun johdatit meidät pois Egyptistä!

12 Emmekö sanoneet tätä sinulle Egyptissä? Sanoimmehan: Anna meidän olla rauhassa, että palvelisimme egyptiläisiä. Sillä parempi olisi ollut palvella egyptiläisiä kuin kuolla erämaahan."

13 Mooses vastasi kansalle: "Älkää peljätkö; pysykää paikoillanne, niin te näette, minkä pelastuksen Herra tänä päivänä antaa teille; sillä sellaista, minkä näette egyptiläisille tapahtuvan tänä päivänä, ette koskaan enää tule näkemään.

14 Herra sotii teidän puolestanne, ja te olkaa hiljaa."

15 Ja Herra sanoi Moosekselle: "Miksi huudat minulle? Sano israelilaisille, että he lähtevät liikkeelle.

16 Mutta sinä nosta sauvasi ja ojenna kätesi meren yli ja halkaise se, niin että israelilaiset voivat käydä meren poikki kuivaa myöten.

17 Ja katso, minä paadutan egyptiläisten sydämet, niin että he tulevat heidän perässänsä; minä näytän kunniani tuhoamalla faraon ja koko hänen sotajoukkonsa, hänen sotavaununsa ja ratsumiehensä.

18 Ja egyptiläiset tulevat tietämään, että minä olen Herra, kun minä näytän kunniani tuhoamalla faraon, hänen sotavaununsa ja ratsumiehensä."

19 Niin Jumalan enkeli, joka oli kulkenut Israelin joukon edellä, siirtyi kulkemaan heidän takanansa; ja pilvenpatsas siirtyi heidän edeltänsä ja asettui heidän taaksensa

20 ja tuli egyptiläisten joukon ja Israelin joukon väliin; ja pilvi oli pimeä noille ja valaisi yön näille. Näin koko yönä toinen joukko ei voinut lähestyä toista.

21 Ja Mooses ojensi kätensä meren yli. Niin Herra saattoi vahvalla itätuulella, joka puhalsi koko yön, meren väistymään ja muutti meren kuivaksi maaksi; ja vesi jakautui kahtia.

22 Ja israelilaiset kulkivat meren poikki kuivaa myöten, ja vesi oli heillä muurina sekä oikealla että vasemmalla puolella.

23 Ja egyptiläiset, kaikki faraon hevoset, hänen sotavaununsa ja ratsumiehensä, ajoivat heitä takaa ja tulivat heidän perässänsä keskelle merta.

24 Kun aamuvartio tuli, katsahti Herra egyptiläisten joukkoa tulenpatsaasta ja pilvestä ja saattoi hämminkiin egyptiläisten joukon.

25 Ja hän antoi heidän vaunujensa pyöräin irtautua, niin että heille kävi vaikeaksi päästä eteenpäin. Niin egyptiläiset sanoivat: "Paetkaamme Israelia, sillä Herra sotii heidän puolestansa egyptiläisiä vastaan".

26 Mutta Herra sanoi Moosekselle: "Ojenna kätesi meren yli, että vedet palautuisivat ja peittäisivät egyptiläiset, heidän sotavaununsa ja ratsumiehensä".

27 Niin Mooses ojensi kätensä meren yli, ja aamun koittaessa meri palasi paikoillensa, egyptiläisten paetessa sitä vastaan; ja Herra syöksi egyptiläiset keskelle merta.

28 Ja vedet palasivat ja peittivät sotavaunut ja ratsumiehet, koko faraon sotajoukon, joka oli seurannut heitä mereen; ei yksikään heistä pelastunut.

29 Mutta israelilaiset kulkivat kuivaa myöten meren poikki, ja vesi oli heillä muurina sekä oikealla että vasemmalla puolella.

30 Niin Herra pelasti Israelin sinä päivänä egyptiläisten käsistä, ja Israel näki egyptiläiset kuolleina meren rannalla.

5215. 'And scorched by an east wind' means full of evil desires. This is clear from the meaning of 'being scorched by an east wind' as being consumed by the fire of evil desires. For an east wind' and the east' in the genuine sense mean love to the Lord and love towards the neighbour, lot, 1250, 3249, 3708, 3762, and therefore in the contrary sense self-love and love of the world, and so cravings and evil desires since these spring from those loves. The word 'fire' is used to refer to such desires for the reason dealt with in 5071, and therefore 'being scorched' is used also.

[2] There are two sources of heat, as there are also two sources of light, the one source of heat being the sun of this world, the other source of heat being the sun of heaven, which is the Lord. It is a well known fact that the sun of this world pours out heat into its own world and onto everything there, but it is a less well known fact that the sun of heaven pours out heat into the whole of heaven. Yet this too may become an equally well known fact if one reflects merely on the heat which exists intrinsically in the human being but which has nothing in common with the heat of the world, that is, if one reflects on what is called vital heat. From this one could know that this heat is of a different nature from the world's heat. That is to say, the former is a living heat but the latter is not at all a living one; also the former, being a living one, fires a person interiorly, namely his will and understanding, imparting to him desires and loves, and affections too. This also explains why desires, loves and affections are spiritual forms of heat, and are also called such. The fact that they are forms of heat is quite evident, for heat is radiated from all parts of the bodies of live persons, even where it is intensely cold. More than that, when desires and affections, that is, when loves, increase, the body grows correspondingly warmer. This kind of heat is what is meant in the Word by 'heat', 'fire', and 'flame'; in the genuine sense celestial and spiritual love is meant, in the contrary sense bodily and earthly love. From this it becomes clear that here 'being scorched by an east wind' means being consumed by the fire of evil desires, and that when used in reference to known facts meant by 'heads' that are 'thin', facts full of evil desires are meant.

[3] 'The east wind' means the blasts of evil desires and of derivative false notions, as is clear from places in the Word where that wind is mentioned, for example, in David,

He caused an east wind to blow 1 in the heavens, and by His power He brought forth the south wind; and He caused flesh to rain onto them like the dust, winged birds like the sand of the sea. Psalms 78:26-27.

'The flesh' which that wind brought meant cravings, and 'winged birds' resulting false notions, as is evident in Numbers 11:31-35, where it is said that the name of the place where the people were struck down for eating flesh was called 'the graves of craving, for there they buried the people who had the craving'.

[4] In Ezekiel,

Behold, the vine that was planted, will it thrive? When the east wind strikes it, will it not wither completely? It will wither on the small spaces where it began to grow. Ezekiel 17:10.

And in the same prophet,

The vine has been plucked up in anger, it has been cast down onto the ground, and the east wind has dried its fruit. They have been plucked out and have withered, each rod of its strength; fire has consumed each one. For fire has gone out from a rod of its branches and has consumed its fruit, so that there is no rod of strength in it, a sceptre for dominion. Ezekiel 19:12, 14.

Here 'the east wind' stands for the blasts of evil desires. In Isaiah,

He gave thought to His rough wind, on the day of the east wind. Isaiah 17:8.

[5] In Hosea,

An east wind will come, Jehovah's wind rising up from the desert, and his spring will become dry, and his fountain dried up. It will strip his treasury of every precious vessel. Hosea 13:15.

Here also 'an east wind' stands for blasts of evil desires. Similarly in Jeremiah,

Like an east wind I will scatter them before the enemy. Jeremiah 18:17.

[6] In David,

By means of an east wind You will shatter the ships of Tarshish. Psalms 48:7.

In Isaiah,

You have forsaken Your people, the house of Jacob, because they have been filled from the east wind, and they are diviners like the Philistines. Isaiah 2:6.

In Hosea,

Ephraim feeds the wind, and pursues the east wind. All the day long he multiplies lies and devastation. Hosea 11:1.

'The wind' here stands for false notions, and 'the east wind' for evil desires. Something similar is also meant in the internal sense by 'an east wind' by means of which 'locusts were brought forth' and by means of which 'the locusts were cast into the sea', 2 Exodus 10:13, 19, and also by means of which 'the waters of the sea Suph' were divided, Exodus 14:21.

1 Yahweh spoke to Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before Yahweh, and died;

2 and Yahweh said to Moses, "Tell Aaron your brother, not to come at all times into the Most Holy Place within the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark; lest he die: for I will appear in the cloud on the mercy seat.

3 "Herewith shall Aaron come into the sanctuary: with a young bull for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.

4 He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches on his body, and shall put on the linen sash, and he shall be clothed with the linen turban. They are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water, and put them on.

5 He shall take from the congregation of the children of Israel two male goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.

6 "Aaron shall offer the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house.

7 He shall take the two goats, and set them before Yahweh at the door of the Tent of Meeting.

8 Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats; one lot for Yahweh, and the other lot for the scapegoat.

9 Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for Yahweh, and offer him for a sin offering.

10 But the goat, on which the lot fell for the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before Yahweh, to make atonement for him, to send him away for the scapegoat into the wilderness.

11 "Aaron shall present the bull of the sin offering, which is for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall kill the bull of the sin offering which is for himself.

12 He shall take a censer full of coals of fire from off the altar before Yahweh, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil:

13 and he shall put the incense on the fire before Yahweh, that the cloud of the incense may cover the mercy seat that is on the testimony, so that he will not die.

14 He shall take some of the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.

15 "Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with his blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:

16 and he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, even all their sins; and so he shall do for the Tent of Meeting, that dwells with them in the midst of their uncleanness.

17 No one shall be in the Tent of Meeting when he enters to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out, and has made atonement for himself and for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.

18 "He shall go out to the altar that is before Yahweh and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the bull's blood, and some of the goat's blood, and put it around on the horns of the altar.

19 He shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and make it holy from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.

20 "When he has made an end of atoning for the Holy Place, the Tent of Meeting, and the altar, he shall present the live goat.

21 Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, even all their sins; and he shall put them on the head of the goat, and shall send him away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness.

22 The goat shall carry all their iniquities on himself to a solitary land, and he shall let the goat go in the wilderness.

23 "Aaron shall come into the Tent of Meeting, and shall take off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the Holy Place, and shall leave them there.

24 Then he shall bathe himself in water in a holy place, and put on his garments, and come out and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people.

25 The fat of the sin offering he shall burn on the altar.

26 "He who lets the goat go for the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.

27 The bull for the sin offering, and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the Holy Place, shall be carried forth outside the camp; and they shall burn their skins, their flesh, and their dung with fire.

28 He who burns them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.

29 "It shall be a statute to you forever: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and shall do no kind of work, the native-born, or the stranger who lives as a foreigner among you:

30 for on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins you shall be clean before Yahweh.

31 It is a Sabbath of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict your souls; it is a statute forever.

32 The priest, who is anointed and who is consecrated to be priest in his father's place, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen garments, even the holy garments.

33 Then he shall make atonement for the Holy Sanctuary; and he shall make atonement for the Tent of Meeting and for the altar; and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly.

34 "This shall be an everlasting statute for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel once in the year because of all their sins." It was done as Yahweh commanded Moses.
