1 Tämä on se sana, jonka propheta Jeremia puhui Barukille Nerijan pojalle, kuin hän nämät sanat kirjoitti kirjaan Jeremian suusta, neljäntenä Jojakimin Josian pojan, Juudan kuninkaan vuonna, ja sanoi:

2 Näin sanoo Herra Zebaot, Israelin Jumala, sinusta Baruk:

3 Sinä sanoit: voi nyt minua! kuinka on Herra vaivaa minun kivulleni lisännyt; minä huokaan minuni väsyksiin, ja en löydä lepoa.

4 Sano hänelle näin: näin sanoo Herra: katso, mitä minä rakensin, sen minä kukistan, ja mitä minä istutin, sen minä hävitän, niin myös koko tämän maan.

5 Ja sinä etsit itselles suuria kappaleita. Älä niitä pyydä, sillä katso, minä tahdon antaa tulla onnettomuuden kaikelle lihalle, sanoo Herra; mutta sinun sielus minä tahdon sinulle niinkuin saaliin antaa joka paikassa, kuhunka sinä vaellat.

4582. 'And poured oil onto it' means the Divine Good of love. This is clear from the meaning of 'oil' as the Divine Good of love, dealt with in 886, 3728. In the internal sense 'setting up a stone pillar, pouring out a drink-offering onto it, and pouring oil onto it' describes the process of progression from truth, as this exists in the ultimate degree, to truth and good that are more interior, and at length to the good of love. For 'a stone pillar' means truth as this exists in the ultimate degree of order, 4580; 'a drink-offering' means truth and good that are more interior, 4581; but 'oil' means the good of love. This was the nature of the process by which the Lord progressed when making Divine His Human; it is also the nature of the process by which man progresses when, through regeneration, the Lord makes him heaven-like.

2805. 'Where is the animal for a burnt offering?' means, Where are those members of the human race who are to be sanctified? This is clear from the representation of sacrifices, in particular burnt offerings. Burnt offerings and sacrifices were representative of internal worship, see 922, 923; they were made from the flock and from the herd - when from the flock, lambs, sheep, she-goats, kids, rams, or he-goats were used, when from the herd, oxen, young bulls, or calves, all of which meant various kinds of celestial and spiritual things - see 922, 1823, 2180; and by means of them people were sanctified, 2776. From all this it may become clear that Isaac's question, 'Where is the animal for the burnt offering?' means, Where are those members of the human race who are to be sanctified? The same is more plainly evident from what comes next, that is to say, from the reply made by Abraham his father, 'God will see for Himself to the animal for a burnt offering', verse 8, which means that the Divine Human will provide those who are to be sanctified; from the fact that later on he saw a ram behind him caught by its horns in a thicket, and offered that as the burnt offering, verse 13, which means members of the human race who belong to the Lord's spiritual Church; as well as from the details that follow after this in verses 14-17.
