1 απαρας δε ισραηλ αυτος και παντα τα αυτου ηλθεν επι το φρεαρ του ορκου και εθυσεν θυσιαν τω θεω του πατρος αυτου ισαακ

2 ειπεν δε ο θεος ισραηλ εν οραματι της νυκτος ειπας ιακωβ ιακωβ ο δε ειπεν τι εστιν

3 λεγων εγω ειμι ο θεος των πατερων σου μη φοβου καταβηναι εις αιγυπτον εις γαρ εθνος μεγα ποιησω σε εκει

4 και εγω καταβησομαι μετα σου εις αιγυπτον και εγω αναβιβασω σε εις τελος και ιωσηφ επιβαλει τας χειρας επι τους οφθαλμους σου

5 ανεστη δε ιακωβ απο του φρεατος του ορκου και ανελαβον οι υιοι ισραηλ τον πατερα αυτων και την αποσκευην και τας γυναικας αυτων επι τας αμαξας ας απεστειλεν ιωσηφ αραι αυτον

6 και αναλαβοντες τα υπαρχοντα αυτων και πασαν την κτησιν ην εκτησαντο εν γη χανααν εισηλθον εις αιγυπτον ιακωβ και παν το σπερμα αυτου μετ' αυτου

7 υιοι και οι υιοι των υιων αυτου μετ' αυτου θυγατερες και θυγατερες των υιων αυτου και παν το σπερμα αυτου ηγαγεν εις αιγυπτον

8 ταυτα δε τα ονοματα των υιων ισραηλ των εισελθοντων εις αιγυπτον ιακωβ και οι υιοι αυτου πρωτοτοκος ιακωβ ρουβην

9 υιοι δε ρουβην ενωχ και φαλλους ασρων και χαρμι

10 υιοι δε συμεων ιεμουηλ και ιαμιν και αωδ και ιαχιν και σααρ και σαουλ υιος της χανανιτιδος

11 υιοι δε λευι γηρσων κααθ και μεραρι

12 υιοι δε ιουδα ηρ και αυναν και σηλωμ και φαρες και ζαρα απεθανεν δε ηρ και αυναν εν γη χανααν εγενοντο δε υιοι φαρες ασρων και ιεμουηλ

13 υιοι δε ισσαχαρ θωλα και φουα και ιασουβ και ζαμβραμ

14 υιοι δε ζαβουλων σερεδ και αλλων και αλοηλ

15 ουτοι υιοι λειας ους ετεκεν τω ιακωβ εν μεσοποταμια της συριας και διναν την θυγατερα αυτου πασαι αι ψυχαι υιοι και θυγατερες τριακοντα τρεις

16 υιοι δε γαδ σαφων και αγγις και σαυνις και θασοβαν και αηδις και αροηδις και αροηλις

17 υιοι δε ασηρ ιεμνα και ιεσουα και ιεουλ και βαρια και σαρα αδελφη αυτων υιοι δε βαρια χοβορ και μελχιηλ

18 ουτοι υιοι ζελφας ην εδωκεν λαβαν λεια τη θυγατρι αυτου η ετεκεν τουτους τω ιακωβ δεκα εξ ψυχας

19 υιοι δε ραχηλ γυναικος ιακωβ ιωσηφ και βενιαμιν

20 εγενοντο δε υιοι ιωσηφ εν γη αιγυπτω ους ετεκεν αυτω ασεννεθ θυγατηρ πετεφρη ιερεως ηλιου πολεως τον μανασση και τον εφραιμ εγενοντο δε υιοι μανασση ους ετεκεν αυτω η παλλακη η συρα τον μαχιρ μαχιρ δε εγεννησεν τον γαλααδ υιοι δε εφραιμ αδελφου μανασση σουταλααμ και τααμ υιοι δε σουταλααμ εδεμ

21 υιοι δε βενιαμιν βαλα και χοβωρ και ασβηλ εγενοντο δε υιοι βαλα γηρα και νοεμαν και αγχις και ρως και μαμφιν και οφιμιν γηρα δε εγεννησεν τον αραδ

22 ουτοι υιοι ραχηλ ους ετεκεν τω ιακωβ πασαι ψυχαι δεκα οκτω

23 υιοι δε δαν ασομ

24 και υιοι νεφθαλι ασιηλ και γωυνι και ισσααρ και συλλημ

25 ουτοι υιοι βαλλας ην εδωκεν λαβαν ραχηλ τη θυγατρι αυτου η ετεκεν τουτους τω ιακωβ πασαι ψυχαι επτα

26 πασαι δε ψυχαι αι εισελθουσαι μετα ιακωβ εις αιγυπτον οι εξελθοντες εκ των μηρων αυτου χωρις των γυναικων υιων ιακωβ πασαι ψυχαι εξηκοντα εξ

27 υιοι δε ιωσηφ οι γενομενοι αυτω εν γη αιγυπτω ψυχαι εννεα πασαι ψυχαι οικου ιακωβ αι εισελθουσαι εις αιγυπτον εβδομηκοντα πεντε

28 τον δε ιουδαν απεστειλεν εμπροσθεν αυτου προς ιωσηφ συναντησαι αυτω καθ' ηρωων πολιν εις γην ραμεσση

29 ζευξας δε ιωσηφ τα αρματα αυτου ανεβη εις συναντησιν ισραηλ τω πατρι αυτου καθ' ηρωων πολιν και οφθεις αυτω επεπεσεν επι τον τραχηλον αυτου και εκλαυσεν κλαυθμω πλειονι

30 και ειπεν ισραηλ προς ιωσηφ αποθανουμαι απο του νυν επει εωρακα το προσωπον σου ετι γαρ συ ζης

31 ειπεν δε ιωσηφ προς τους αδελφους αυτου αναβας απαγγελω τω φαραω και ερω αυτω οι αδελφοι μου και ο οικος του πατρος μου οι ησαν εν γη χανααν ηκασιν προς με

32 οι δε ανδρες εισιν ποιμενες ανδρες γαρ κτηνοτροφοι ησαν και τα κτηνη και τους βοας και παντα τα αυτων αγειοχασιν

33 εαν ουν καλεση υμας φαραω και ειπη υμιν τι το εργον υμων εστιν

34 ερειτε ανδρες κτηνοτροφοι εσμεν οι παιδες σου εκ παιδος εως του νυν και ημεις και οι πατερες ημων ινα κατοικησητε εν γη γεσεμ αραβια βδελυγμα γαρ εστιν αιγυπτιοις πας ποιμην προβατων

6043. 'And say to him, My brothers and my father's house, who were in the land of Canaan, have come to me' means that the truths and forms of good which the Church possesses are to be introduced [into that knowledge]. This is clear from the representation of the sons of Israel, to whom his 'brothers' refers here, as spiritual truths within the natural, dealt with just above in 6040; from the meaning of 'father's house' as the forms of good there, also dealt with just above, in 6041; from the meaning of 'the land of Canaan' as the Church, dealt with in 3686, 3705, 4447, 4517, 5136; and from the meaning of 'coming' to Joseph, or to Egypt where Joseph was, as being introduced into the Church's factual knowledge, dealt with above in 6004, 6018. Regarding the introduction of the truths the Church possesses into the factual knowledge present in the natural, see above in 6023, and regarding the joining together of them, below in 6047.

4447. 'Hamor spoke to them, saying' means the good of the Church among the Ancients. This is clear from the representation of 'Hamor' as that which was received from the Ancients, dealt with in 4431, namely the good of the Church received from them, for the good of the Church is 'a father', and the truth derived from that good, meant here by 'Shechem', is 'a son' - which also is why 'father' in the Word means good, and 'son' truth. The expression 'the good of the Church among the Ancients' is used here, not the good of the Ancient Church, for the reason that the phrase 'the Church among the Ancients' is used to mean the Church that descended from the Most Ancient Church which existed before the Flood, whereas the Ancient Church is used to mean the Church which came into existence after the Flood. Those two Churches have been dealt with several times previous to this, when it has been shown that the Most Ancient Church which existed before the Flood was celestial whereas the Ancient Church which came into existence after the Flood was spiritual. The difference between the two has also been dealt with often.

[2] Remnants of the Most Ancient Church which was celestial were still in existence in the land of Canaan, especially among those in that land who were called Hittites and Hivites. The reason why such remnants did not exist anywhere else was that the Most Ancient Church, which was called Man or Adam, 478, 479, existed in the land of Canaan, where the garden of Eden, which meant the intelligence and wisdom of the members of that Church, 100, 1588, and the trees in it their perception, 103, 2163, 2722, 2972, was therefore situated. And because intelligence and wisdom were meant by that garden or paradise the Church itself is also meant by it. And because the Church is meant, so also is heaven; and because heaven is meant, so also in the highest sense is the Lord. So it is that in the highest sense the land of Canaan also means the Lord, in the relative sense heaven and also the Church, and in the personal sense the member of the Church, 1413, 1437, 1607, 3038, 3481, 3705. So it is too that the word 'land' standing by itself in the Word has a similar meaning, 566, 662, 1066, 1067, 1413, 1607, 3355; while a new heaven and a new earth mean a new Church, internally and externally, 1733, 1850, 2117, 2118 (end), 3355 (end). The Most Ancient Church was situated in the land of Canaan, see 567, and it was from this that places there became representative. It explains why Abram was commanded to go there, and also why the land was given to his descendants from Jacob, namely that the representatives connected with the places which were to be used in the composition of the Word might be perpetuated, 3686. This was why every place in that land, including mountains and rivers, and also all the borders surrounding it, became representative, 1585, 1866, 4240.

[3] From all these considerations one may see what the expression 'Church among the Ancients' is used to mean, namely remnants of the Most Ancient Church. And because those remnants existed among the Hittites and Hivites, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, with their wives, acquired a burial-place among the Hittites in their land, Genesis 23:1-end; Genesis 49:29-32; 50:13; and Joseph among the Hivites, Joshua 24:32. Hamor, Shechem's father, represented the remnants of that Church, and as a consequence means the good of the Church among the Ancients and therefore the origin of interior truth from a Divine stock, 4399. What the difference is between the Most Ancient Church which existed before the Flood and the Ancient Church which came into existence after the Flood, see 597, 607, 608, 640, 641, 765, 784, 895, 920, 1114-1128, 1238, 1327, 2896, 2897.
