1 Und des HERRN Wort geschah zu mir und sprach:

2 Du Menschenkind, richte dein Angesicht wider Jerusalem und träufe wider die Heiligtümer und weissage wider das Land Israel

3 und sprich zum Lande Israel: So spricht der HERR HERR: Siehe, ich will an dich; ich will mein Schwert aus der Scheide ziehen und will in dir ausrotten beide, Gerechte und Ungerechte.

4 Weil ich denn in dir beide, Gerechte und Ungerechte, ausrotte, so wird mein Schwert aus der Scheide fahren über alles Fleisch vom Mittage her bis gen Mitternacht.

5 Und soll alles Fleisch erfahrern, daß ich, der HERR, mein Schwert hab' aus seiner Scheide gezogen; und soll nicht wieder eingesteckt werden.

6 Und du, Menschenkind, sollst seufzen, bis dir die Lenden weh tun; ja, bitterlich sollst du seufzen, daß sie es sehen.

7 Und wenn sie zu dir sagen werden: Warum seufzest du? sollst du sagen: Um des Geschreies willen, das da kommt, vor welchem alle Herzen verzagen und alle Hände sinken, aller Mut fallen, und alle Kniee wie Wasser gehen werden. Siehe, es kommt und wird geschehen, spricht der HERR HERR.

8 Und des HERRN Wort geschah zu mir und sprach:

9 Du Menschenkind, weissage und sprich: So spricht der HERR: Sprich: Das Schwert, ja, das Schwert ist geschärft und gefegt.

10 Es ist geschärft, daß es schlachten soll; es ist gefegt, daß es blinken soll. O wie froh wollten wir sein, wenn er gleich alle Bäume zu Ruten machte über die bösen Kinder!

11 Aber er hat ein Schwert zu fegen gegeben, daß man es fassen soll; es ist geschärft und gefegt, daß man's dem Totschläger in die Hand gebe.

12 Schreie und heule, du Menschenkind; denn es gehet über mein Volk und über alle Regenten in Israel, die zum Schwert samt meinem Volk versammelt sind. Darum schlage auf deine Lenden:

13 Denn er hat sie oft gezüchtiget; was hat's geholfen? Es will der bösen Kinder Rute nicht helfen, spricht der HERR HERR.

14 Und du, Menschenkind, weissage und schlage deine Hände zusammen. Denn das Schwert wird zwiefach, ja dreifach kommen, ein Würgeschwert, ein Schwert großer Schlacht, das sie auch treffen wird in den Kammern, da sie hinfliehen.

15 Ich will das Schwert lassen klingen, daß die Herzen verzagen und viele fallen sollen an allen ihren Toren. Ach, wie glänzet es und hauet daher zur Schlacht!

16 Und sprechen: Haue drein, beide, zur Rechten und Linken, was vor dir ist!

17 Da will ich dann mit meinen Händen darob frohlocken und meinen Zorn gehen lassen. Ich, der HERR, hab es gesagt.

18 Und des HERRN Wort geschah zu mir und sprach:

19 Du Menschenkind, mache zween Wege, durch welche kommen soll das Schwert des Königs zu Babel; sie sollen aber alle beide aus einem Lande gehen.

20 Und stelle ein Zeichen vorne an den Weg zur Stadt, dahin es weisen soll; und mache den Weg, daß das Schwert komme gen Rabbath der Kinder Ammon und nach Juda, zu der festen Stadt Jerusalem.

21 Denn der König zu Babel wird sich an die Wegscheide stellen, vorne an den zween Wegen, daß er ihm wahrsagen lasse, mit den Pfeilen um das Los schieße, seinen Abgott frage und schaue die Leber an.

22 Und die Wahrsagung wird auf die rechte Seite gen Jerusalem deuten, daß er solle Böcke hinanführen lassen und Löcher machen und mit großem Geschrei sie überfalle und morde, und daß er Böcke führen solle wider die Tore und da Wall schütte und Bollwerk baue.

23 Aber es wird sie solch Wahrsagen falsch dünken, er schwöre, wie teuer er will. Er aber wird denken an die Missetat, daß er sie gewinne.

24 Darum spricht der HERR HERR also: Darum daß euer gedacht wird um eurer Missetat und euer Ungehorsam offenbart ist, daß man eure Sünde siehet in all eurem Tun, ja darum daß euer gedacht wird, werdet ihr mit Gewalt gefangen werden.

25 Und du, Fürst in Israel, der du verdammt und verurteilet bist, des Tag daherkommen wird, wenn die Missetat zum Ende kommen ist,

26 so spricht der HERR HERR: Tu weg den Hut und heb ab die Krone! Denn es wird weder der Hut noch die Krone bleiben, sondern der sich erhöhet hat, soll geniedriget werden, und der sich niedriget, soll erhöhet werden.

27 Ich will die Krone zunichte, zunichte, zunichte machen, bis der komme, der sie haben soll; dem will ich sie geben.

28 Und du, Menschenkind, weissage und sprich: So spricht der HERR HERR von den Kindern Ammon und von ihrer Schmach und sprich: Das Schwert, das Schwert ist gezückt, daß es schlachten soll; es ist gefegt, daß es würgen soll, und soll blinken,

29 darum daß du falsche Gesichte dir sagen lässest und Lügen weissagen, damit du auch übergeben werdest unter den erschlagenen Gottlosen, welchen ihr Tag kam, da die Missetat zum Ende kommen war.

30 Und ob es schon wieder in die Scheide gesteckt würde, so will ich dich doch richten an dem Ort, da du geschaffen, und im Lande, da du geboren bist.

31 Und will meinen Zorn über dich schütten, ich will das Feuer meines Grimms über dich aufblasen und will dich Leuten, die brennen und verderben können, überantworten.

32 Du mußt dem Feuer zur Speise werden, und dein Blut muß im Lande vergossen werden; und man wird dein nicht mehr gedenken. Denn ich, der HERR, hab es geredet.

759. "And the merchants of the earth have become rich owing to the potencies of her delights." This symbolizes the greater and lower in rank in the Roman Catholic hierarchy who by their dominion over sacred things strive for Divine majesty and superregal glory, who continually seek to establish it by multiplying the number of monasteries and possessions under their control, and by collecting and accumulating the world's treasures without end, and who thus procure for themselves physical and natural delights and gratifications by claiming for themselves a celestial and spiritual dominion.

The merchants of Babylon can only mean the greater and lower in rank in their church hierarchy, because in verse 23 of this chapter we are told that they are the great men of the earth. And the potencies of her delights with which they have become rich can only mean the dogmas that are the means by which they acquire for themselves dominion over people's souls, and so also over their possessions and wealth. People know that they collect these without end and swell their treasuries with them, and also that they make merchandise of the sanctities of the church, by selling salvation, for example, or heaven, in exchange for offerings and gifts made to monasteries and their saints and images, or in exchange for masses, indulgences and various dispensations.

[2] Who cannot see that if the papal dominion had not been broken at the time of the Protestant Reformation, Roman Catholics would have scraped together the possessions and wealth of all the kingdoms in the whole of Europe? And that then they would have made themselves the sole lords, and everyone else their servants? Do they not have the greatest part of their wealth from preceding centuries when they had power over emperors and kings, whom they could excommunicate and depose if they did not obey? And do they not still have annual incomes that are immense, and treasuries full of gold, silver, and precious stones?

The same barbarous lust for dominion is still lodged in the hearts of many of them, and is restrained only by a fear of its loss if it should extend beyond accepted limits.

Of what use, however, are such great incomes, treasures and possessions to them, other than to be delighted by them, to pride themselves on having them, and to establish their dominion to eternity?

It can be seen from this what is here symbolized by merchants of the earth who have become rich owing to the potencies of Babylon's delights.

They are called merchants also in Isaiah:

(The inhabitants of Babylon) are as stubble. Fire has burned them; they do not deliver their soul from the power of the flame... Such are... your merchants from your youth. (Isaiah 47:14-15)

[3] In the Word, to be a merchant or trader means, symbolically, to be engaged in procuring for oneself spiritual riches, which are concepts of truth and goodness, and in an opposite sense, concepts of falsity and evil, and to use the first to gain heaven, and the second to gain the world. For that reason the Lord likened the kingdom of heaven to a merchant seeking beautiful pearls (Matthew 13:45-46), and the people in the church to servants who were given talents with which to trade and gain more (Matthew 25:14-30), or who were given ten minas with which to likewise trade and gain more (Luke 19:12-26).

Moreover, because Tyre symbolizes the church in respect to its concepts of truth and goodness, therefore the whole of chapter twenty-seven in Ezekiel has trading and gain as its subject, and we are told concerning Tyre:

In your wisdom and your understanding you have gained... for yourself... gold and silver into your treasuries; and by the great wisdom in your trading you have increased your riches... (Ezekiel 28:4-5)

And elsewhere:

...Tyre... has been laid waste..., whose merchants are princes, and its traders the honorable of the earth. (Isaiah 23:1, 8)

Also, the corrupt church among Jews in the land of Canaan is called the land of trade (Ezekiel 16:3, 29; 21:30; 29:14).

1 The word of Yahweh came again to me, saying,

2 You, son of man, take up a lamentation over Tyre;

3 and tell Tyre, you who dwell at the entry of the sea, who are the merchant of the peoples to many islands, thus says the Lord Yahweh: You, Tyre, have said, I am perfect in beauty.

4 Your borders are in the heart of the seas; your builders have perfected your beauty.

5 They have made all your planks of fir trees from Senir; they have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.

6 Of the oaks of Bashan have they made your oars; they have made your benches of ivory inlaid in boxwood, from the islands of Kittim.

7 Of fine linen with embroidered work from Egypt was your sail, that it might be to you for a banner; blue and purple from the islands of Elishah was your awning.

8 The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers: your wise men, Tyre, were in you, they were your pilots.

9 The old men of Gebal and the wise men of it were in you your repairers of ship seams: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you to deal in your merchandise.

10 Persia and Lud and Put were in your army, your men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in you; they set forth your comeliness.

11 The men of Arvad with your army were on your walls all around, and valorous men were in your towers; they hanged their shields on your walls all around; they have perfected your beauty.

12 Tarshish was your merchant by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded for your wares.

13 Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were your traffickers; they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass for your merchandise.

14 They of the house of Togarmah traded for your wares with horses and war horses and mules.

15 The men of Dedan were your traffickers; many islands were the market of your hand: they brought you in exchange horns of ivory and ebony.

16 Syria was your merchant by reason of the multitude of your handiworks: they traded for your wares with emeralds, purple, and embroidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and rubies.

17 Judah, and the land of Israel, they were your traffickers: they traded for your merchandise wheat of Minnith, and confections, and honey, and oil, and balm.

18 Damascus was your merchant for the multitude of your handiworks, by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches, with the wine of Helbon, and white wool.

19 Vedan and Javan traded with yarn for your wares: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were among your merchandise.

20 Dedan was your trafficker in precious cloths for riding.

21 Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they were the merchants of your hand; in lambs, and rams, and goats, in these were they your merchants.

22 The traffickers of Sheba and Raamah, they were your traffickers; they traded for your wares with the chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold.

23 Haran and Canneh and Eden, the traffickers of Sheba, Asshur [and] Chilmad, were your traffickers.

24 These were your traffickers in choice wares, in wrappings of blue and embroidered work, and in chests of rich clothing, bound with cords and made of cedar, among your merchandise.

25 The ships of Tarshish were your caravans for your merchandise: and you were replenished, and made very glorious in the heart of the seas.

26 Your rowers have brought you into great waters: the east wind has broken you in the heart of the seas.

27 Your riches, and your wares, your merchandise, your mariners, and your pilots, your repairers of ship seams, and the dealers in your merchandise, and all your men of war, who are in you, with all your company which is in the midst of you, shall fall into the heart of the seas in the day of your ruin.

28 At the sound of the cry of your pilots the suburbs shall shake.

29 All who handled the oar, the mariners, [and] all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand on the land,

30 and shall cause their voice to be heard over you, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust on their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes:

31 and they shall make themselves bald for you, and clothe them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for you in bitterness of soul with bitter mourning.

32 In their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for you, and lament over you, [saying], Who is there like Tyre, like her who is brought to silence in the midst of the sea?

33 When your wares went forth out of the seas, you filled many peoples; you did enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of your riches and of your merchandise.

34 In the time that you were broken by the seas in the depths of the waters, your merchandise and all your company did fall in the midst of you.

35 All the inhabitants of the islands are astonished at you, and their kings are horribly afraid; they are troubled in their face.

36 The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; you are become a terror, and you shall nevermore have any being.
