212. "'And white garments, that you may be clothed.'" This symbolically means, in order to acquire for themselves genuine truths of wisdom.

To be shown that garments symbolize the truths clothing goodness, see no. 166 above, and that white is predicated of truths, no. 167. White garments, therefore, symbolize genuine truths of wisdom, and this because gold refined in fire symbolizes the goodness of celestial love, the truths accompanying this love being genuine truths of wisdom.

1 "Come down, and sit in the dust, virgin daughter of Babylon; sit on the ground without a throne, daughter of the Chaldeans: for you shall no more be called tender and delicate.

2 Take the millstones, and grind meal; remove your veil, strip off the train, uncover the leg, pass through the rivers.

3 Your nakedness shall be uncovered, yes, your shame shall be seen: I will take vengeance, and will spare no man."
