And they rose upearly in the morning, and gat them up into the top of the mountain, saying, Lo, we be here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath promised: for we have sinned.

Verse 40. And secondly, in a state of external illustration, and in the excitement of selfish fear, they are willing to be obedient, and outwardly, at least, to adopt the heavenly life, and forsake their sin.
