1 Nầy là lời phán cùng Giê-rê-mi về cả dân Giu-đa, trong năm thứ tư đời Giê-hô-gia-kim, con trai Giô-si-a, vua của Giu-đa; ấy là năm thứ nhứt đời Nê-bu-cát-nết-sa, vua nước Ba-by-lôn.

2 Ðấng tiên tri Giê-rê-mi rao truyền những lời nầy trước mặt dân Giu-đa và hết thảy dân cư Giê-ru-sa-lem rằng:

3 Từ năm thứ mười ba đời Giô-si-a, con trai A-môn, vua của Giu-đa, cho đến ngày nay có hai nươi ba năm, lời của Ðức Giê-hô-va phán cùng tôi. Từ lúc đó, tôi dậy sớm nói cùng các ngươi; nhưng các ngươi chẳng khứng nghe tôi.

4 Ðức Giê-hô-va đã sai các đầy tớ Ngài, là các tiên tri, đến cùng các ngươi, dậy sớm mà sai đến, nhưng các ngươi không nghe lời, không để tai mà nghe.

5 Các đấng ấy nói rằng: Mỗi người trong các ngươi hãy từ đường dữ mình trở lại; hãy bỏ điều ác của việc làm mình, và ở trong đất mà Ðức Giê-hô-va đã ban cho các ngươi và tổ phụ các ngươi từ xưa cho đến đời đời.

6 Chớ theo các thần khác đặng hầu việc và thờ lạy, chớ lấy việc tay mình làm ra mà chọc giận ta nữa, thì ta sẽ không làm hại chi các ngươi.

7 Ðức Giê-hô-va phán: Nhưng các ngươi chẳng nghe ta, mà lấy việc làm của tay mình chọc giận ta, và chuốc lấy tai hại cho mình.

8 Vậy nên, Ðức Giê-hô-va vạn quân phán như vầy: Vì các ngươi đã chẳng nghe lời ta,

9 nầy, ta sẽ sai đòi mọi họ hàng phương bắc cùng đầy tớ ta là Nê-bu-các-nết-sa, vua Ba-by-lôn, đến nghịch cùng đất nầy, nghịch cùng dân cư nó, và các nước ở chung quanh. Ta sẽ diệt hết chúng nó, làm chúng nó nên sự gở lạ, chê cười, và hoang vu đời đời. Ðức Giê-hô-va phán vậy.

10 Vả, ta sẽ làm cho trong vòng chúng nó hết tiếng reo vui và kêu-mừng, hết tiếng của rể mới và dâu mới, hết tiếng ầm ầm của cối xay và ánh sáng của đèn.

11 Cả đất nầy sẽ trở nên hoang vu gở lạ, các nước nầy sẽ phục sự vua Ba-by-lôn trong bảy mươi năm.

12 Ðức Giê-hô-va phán: Khi bảy mươi năm ấy sẽ mãn, ta sẽ phạt vua Ba-by-lôn và dân người, vì cớ tội ác chúng nó. Ta sẽ phạt xứ người Canh-đê và biến thành một nơi hoang vu đời đời.

13 Phàm lời ta đã phán nghịch cùng đất ấy, tức lời chép trong sách nầy, là lời Giê-rê-mi đã nói tiên tri nghịch cùng muôn nước, thì sẽ xảy đến cho đất ấy.

14 Vả, sẽ có nhiều nước và vua lớn bắt chính người Canh-đê làm tôi mọi, và ta sẽ báo chúng nó theo việc làm của chúng, và theo việc bởi tay chúng làm ra.

15 Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên có phán cùng tôi như vầy: Hãy lấy chén rượu của sự giận khỏi tay ta, khá cho các dân mà ta sai ngươi đến đều uống lấy.

16 Chúng nó sẽ uống, sẽ đi xiêu tó, và điên cuồng, vì cớ gươm dao mà ta sẽ sai đến giữa chúng nó.

17 Vậy tôi lấy chén khỏi tay Ðức Giê-hô-va, và khiến cho mọi nước mà Ðức Giê-hô-va sai tôi đến đều uống lấy:

18 cho Giê-ru-sa-lem và cho các thành của Giu-đa, cho các vua các quan trưởng nó, làm cho chúng nó hoang vu, gở lạ, bị chê cười, chịu rủa sả như ngày nay;

19 cho Pha-ra-ôn, vua nước Ê-díp-tô, cho những đầy tớ người, cho các quan trưởng và dân sự người;

20 cho mọi dân lộn, cho mọi vua xứ Uùt-xơ, cho mọi vua xứ Phi-li-tin: tức vua của Ách-ca-lôn, của Ga-xa, của Éc-rôn, và những kẻ còn sống sót ở Ách-đốt;

21 cho Ê-đôm, cho Mô-áp, cho con cái Am-môn;

22 cho các vua Ty-rơ, cho mọi vua ở Si-đôn, và cho mọi vua ở cù lao ngoài biển;

23 cho Ðê-đan, cho Thê-ma, cho Bu-xơ, cho những kẻ cạo tóc chung quanh đầu;

24 cho mọi vua A-ra-bi, cho các vua của các nước thuộc về các giống lộn ở đồng vắng;

25 cho mọi vua của Xim-ri, cho mọi vua của Ê-lam, cho mọi vua của Mê-đi;

26 cho mờ tối vua phương bắc, ở gần hoặc ở xa, cho vua nầy cùng với vua kia; sau lại, cho mọi nước thế gian ở trên mặt đất. Vua của Sê-sác cũng sẽ uống chén sau các vua kia.

27 Ngươi khá bảo họ rằng: Ðức Giê-hô-va vạn quân, Ðức Chúa Trời của Y-sơ-ra-ên, phán như vầy: Hãy uống đi hãy say, mửa, ngã xuống, đừng dậy nữa, vì cớ gươm dao mà ta sẽ sai đến giữa các ngươi!

28 Nếu họ không khứng lấy chén ở tay ngươi đặng uống, thì ngươi khá bảo rằng: Ðức Giê-hô-va vạn quân phán như vầy: Chắc các ngươi phải uống!

29 Vả, nầy, ấy là thành kia là thành được xưng bằng danh ta, mà ta bắt đầu xuống tai vạ; còn các ngươi, há khỏi hình phạt được cả sao? Không! các ngươi sẽ không khỏi hình phạt đâu; vì ta sẽ sai gươm dao đến trên mọi dân cư trên đất, Ðức Giê-hô-va vạn quân phán vậy.

30 Cho nên ngươi khá lấy mọi lời nầy nói tiên tri nghịch cùng họ, và bảo rằng: Ðức Giê-hô-va quát tháo từ nơi cao; phát tiếng từ chỗ ở thánh Ngài; quát tháo to nghịch cùng chuồng chiên; trổi tiếng kêu như những kẻ đạp trái nho, nghịch cùng hết thảy dân cư trên đất.

31 Tiếng om sòm sẽ vang ra đến cùng đất; vì Ðức Giê-hô-va tranh cạnh cùng các nước, phán xét mọi xác thịt, phó những kẻ dữ cho gươm dao, Ðức Giê-hô-va phán vậy.

32 Ðức Giê-hô-va vạn quân phán như vầy: Nầy, tai vạ sẽ từ một dân nầy qua một dân khác; một trận bão lớn dấy lên từ các nơi đầu cùng đất.

33 Thây của những kẻ mà Ðức Giê-hô-va đã giết trong ngày đó, sẽ đầy trên đất từ đầu nầy đến đầu kia; chẳng ai khóc, chẳng thâu liệm, chẳng chôn, sẽ làm phân trên mặt đất!

34 Hỡi những kẻ chăn, hãy than khóc, cất tiếng than van! Hỡi những kẻ dẫn bầy chiên, hãy lăn trong tro bụi! Vì ngày các ngươi bị giết, kỳ các ngươi bị tan lạc đã đến hạn; các ngươi sẽ ngã xuống như bình quí giá.

35 Kẻ chăn không bởi đâu trốn tránh, kẻ dẫn bầy chiên không bởi đâu thoát ra.

36 Kẻ chăn phát tiếng kêu, kẻ dẫn bầy chiên than khóc; vì Ðức Giê-hô-va phá hoang đồng cỏ họ,

37 và những chuồng chiên yên ổn đã bị bắt phải nín lặng bởi sự nóng giận của Ðức Giê-hô-va.

38 Ngài như sư tử đã ra khỏi chỗ kín mình. Ðất chúng nó đã trở nên gở lạ bởi sức mạnh rất hung đè nén, và cơn giận rất mãnh liệt.

4434. 'And his soul clung to Dinah, [the daughter of Jacob]' means the inclination to be joined to it. This is clear from the meaning of 'the soul clinging' as an inclination. It is evident that an inclination to be joined is meant because things connected with conjugial love imply in the internal sense the joining together of truth and good, and of good and truth. The reason why things connected with conjugial love imply in the internal sense that spiritual joining together is that conjugial love has its origin in the marriage of truth and good and of good and truth, see 2618, 2727-2729, 2737, 2803, 3132. Consequently the adulteration of good is meant by an act of adultery, and the falsification of truth by an act of whoredom described in the Word, 2466, 2729, 2750, 3399. From these considerations it may be seen that all the details mentioned in this chapter concerning Shechem and Dinah mean nothing else in the internal sense than the joining of truth, represented by 'Shechem', to the affection for truth, represented by 'Dinah', so that the words 'his soul clung to Dinah' mean the inclination to be joined to this affection.

[2] Since the subject in the whole of this chapter is Shechem's love towards Dinah and how he sought to make her his wife, and since things connected with conjugial love mean spiritual joining together, let it now be established from the Word that marriages and things that have a connection with marriages do not imply anything else: In John,

Let us be glad and exult, and let us give glory to Him, for the time of the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His Wife has made herself ready. Blessed are those who have been called to the marriage supper of the Lamb. Revelation 19:7, 9.

In the same book,

I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. One of the seven angels spoke to me, saying, Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb. He carried me away in the spirit onto a great and high mountain and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. Revelation 21:2, 9-10.

It is quite evident that betrothal and marriage in these places mean nothing other than the joining of the Lord to the Church, which is effected by means of truth and good. For 'the holy city' and 'the new Jerusalem' mean nothing other than the Church - 'city' meaning the truth of the Church, see 402, 2268, 2449, 2451, 2712, 2943, 3216, and 'Jerusalem' the spiritual Church, 402, 2117, 3654.

[3] In Malachi,

Judah has acted faithlessly, and abomination has been committed in Israel and in Jerusalem, for Judah has profaned the holiness of Jehovah, for he loved and married the daughter of a foreign god. Jehovah was a witness between you and the wife of your youth, against whom you have acted faithlessly. Malachi 2:11, 14-15.

'Loving and marrying the daughter of a foreign god' means joining oneself to falsity instead of truth, which is 'the wife of one's youth'.

[4] In Ezekiel,

You took your sons and your daughters whom you had borne to Me, and sacrificed them so as to be devoured. Was the matter of your acts of whoredom a small one? You are your mother's daughter who loathes her husband and her sons, and you are the sister of your sisters who loathed their husbands and their sons. Ezekiel 16:20, 45.

This refers to the abominations of Jerusalem which, because they were the product of evils and falsities, are described in this chapter by means of the kind of things that are the direct opposite of marriages, that is to say, acts of adultery and of whoredom. 'The husbands' whom they loathed are goods, 'the sons' truths, and 'the daughters' the affections for these.

[5] In Isaiah,

Sing, O barren one that did not bear; resound with singing and cry out for joy, O one that has not been in travail, for the sons of her that is desolate will be more than the sons of her that is married. You will not remember any more the reproach of your widowhood, for your Maker is your Husband, 1 Jehovah Zebaoth is His name, and your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel, the God of the whole earth He is called. For Jehovah has called you like a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth when she is put away, said your God. All your sons are taught by Jehovah, and much is the peace of your sons. Isaiah 54:1, 4-6, 13.

Since 'a marriage' means the joining together of truth and good and of good and truth, one may see what is meant by husband and wife, sons and daughters, widows, women who have been put away, and by bearing, giving birth, being desolate, and being barren; for all these expressions have some connection with marriage. The meaning in the spiritual sense of each of these expressions has been shown many times in the explanatory sections.

[6] In the same prophet,

For Zion's sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest. You will no more be called Deserted, but your land will be named Married, for Jehovah will take His pleasure in you, and your land will be married. Forasmuch as a young man will marry a virgin, your sons will marry you; and there will be the joy of a bridegroom over a bride, your God will rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:1, 4-5.

Anyone unacquainted with the internal sense of the Word may suppose that such imagery in the Word is simply an employment of comparisons like many of those used in everyday speech, and that this is the reason why the Church is compared to a daughter, a virgin, and a wife, and so why matters of faith and charity are compared to things which have some connection with marriage. But in the Word everything is representative of that which is spiritual or celestial, and it is a real correspondence; for the Word has come down from heaven, and because it has come down from there it is in origin something Divinely celestial and spiritual, to which everything in the sense of the letter corresponds. Consequently things connected with the heavenly marriage, which is good and truth joined together, pass into those that correspond to them, and so into those which have some connection with marriages on earth.

[7] This also explains why the Lord likened the kingdom of heaven - that is, His kingdom in heaven and His kingdom on earth, which is the Church - to a certain king, who arranged a wedding for his son and invited many to it, Matthew 22:2 and following verses, and also to ten virgins who took lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom, Matthew 25:1 and following verses. The Lord also referred to those who belong to the Church as 'the sons of the wedding',

Jesus said, Can the sons of the wedding mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. Matthew 9:15.

[8] For the same reasons the affection for good and the affection for truth are called 'the joy and gladness of a bridegroom and bride', for heavenly joy is the product of those affections and resides within them, as in Isaiah,

Your sons will marry you; and there will be the joy of a bridegroom over a bride, Jehovah your God will rejoice over you. Isaiah 62:5.

In Jeremiah,

The voice of joy and the voice of gladness, and the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the voice of those that say, Give thanks 2 to Jehovah, for Jehovah is good. Jeremiah 33:11.

In the same prophet,

I will make to cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, for the land will turn into a waste. Jeremiah 7:34; 16:9; 25:10.

And in John,

The light of a lamp will not shine in Babylon any more, and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride will not be heard in it any more. Revelation 18:23.

[9] Since marriages on earth correspond through truly conjugial love to the heavenly marriage which is that of good and truth, the laws laid down in the Word concerning betrothals and marriages correspond completely to the spiritual laws of the heavenly marriage, such as the law that men were to marry one wife only, Mark 10:2-8; Luke 16:18; for in the case of the heavenly marriage the situation is that no good can be joined to any but its own truth, or truth to any but its own good. If joined to any truth other than its own, good could not possibly be held together but would be torn apart and so would perish. In the spiritual Church 'wife' (uxor) represents good and 'man' (vir) represents truth, but in the celestial Church 'husband' (maritus) represents good and 'wife' (uxor) truth. Furthermore - and this is an arcanum - they not only represent those things but also in actual fact correspond to them.

[10] The laws also concerning marriages which have been laid down in the Old Testament have in a similar way a correspondence with the laws of the heavenly marriage, such as those in Exodus 21:7-11; 22:15-16, 17; 34:16; Numbers 36:6; Deuteronomy 7:3-4; 22:28-29; and also the laws about the forbidden degrees of affinity, Leviticus 18:6-20. In the Lord's Divine mercy these will be dealt with individually in some other place. The fact that the degrees and laws of marriages have their origin in the laws of truth and good which belong to the heavenly marriage and with which they correlate is evident in Ezekiel,

The priests the Levites shall not take as wives for themselves a widow or a woman that has been put away, but virgins from the seed of the house of Israel; only a widow who is the widow of a priest may they take. Ezekiel 44:22.

This refers to the holy city, the new Jerusalem, and to the heavenly Canaan which clearly mean the Lord's kingdom and His Church. Consequently 'the Levites' do not mean Levites, nor do 'a widow and a woman who has been put away' mean a widow and one put away, but the kind of things they correspond to.

2 Thus says Yahweh, The people who were left of the sword found favor in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him to rest.

3 Yahweh appeared of old to me, [saying], Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn you.

4 Again will I build you, and you shall be built, O virgin of Israel: again you shall be adorned with your tambourines, and shall go forth in the dances of those who make merry.

5 Again you shall plant vineyards on the mountains of Samaria; the planters shall plant, and shall enjoy [its fruit].

6 For there shall be a day, that the watchmen on the hills of Ephraim shall cry, Arise, and let us go up to Zion to Yahweh our God.

7 For thus says Yahweh, Sing with gladness for Jacob, and shout for the chief of the nations: publish, praise, and say, Yahweh, save your people, the remnant of Israel.

8 Behold, I will bring them from the north country, and gather them from the uttermost parts of the earth, [and] with them the blind and the lame, the woman with child and her who travails with child together: a great company shall they return here.

9 They shall come with weeping; and with petitions will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way in which they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

10 Hear the word of Yahweh, you nations, and declare it in the islands afar off; and say, He who scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as shepherd does his flock.

11 For Yahweh has ransomed Jacob, and redeemed him from the hand of him who was stronger than he.

12 They shall come and sing in the height of Zion, and shall flow to the goodness of Yahweh, to the grain, and to the new wine, and to the oil, and to the young of the flock and of the herd: and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.

13 Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, and the young men and the old together; for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.

14 I will satiate the soul of the priests with fatness, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, says Yahweh.

15 Thus says Yahweh: A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping, Rachel weeping for her children; she refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.

16 Thus says Yahweh: Refrain your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears; for your work shall be rewarded, says Yahweh; and they shall come again from the land of the enemy.

17 There is hope for your latter end, says Yahweh; and [your] children shall come again to their own border.

18 I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself [thus], You have chastised me, and I was chastised, as a calf unaccustomed [to the yoke]: turn me, and I shall be turned; for you are Yahweh my God.

19 Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I struck on my thigh: I was ashamed, yes, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

20 Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a darling child? for as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my heart yearns for him; I will surely have mercy on him, says Yahweh.

21 Set up road signs, make guideposts; set your heart toward the highway, even the way by which you went: turn again, virgin of Israel, turn again to these your cities.

22 How long will you go here and there, you backsliding daughter? for Yahweh has created a new thing in the earth: a woman shall encompass a man.

23 Thus says Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel, Yet again shall they use this speech in the land of Judah and in its cities, when I shall bring again their captivity: Yahweh bless you, habitation of righteousness, mountain of holiness.

24 Judah and all its cities shall dwell therein together, the farmers, and those who go about with flocks.

25 For I have satiated the weary soul, and every sorrowful soul have I replenished.

26 On this I awakened, and saw; and my sleep was sweet to me.

27 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man, and with the seed of animal.

28 It shall happen that, like as I have watched over them to pluck up and to break down and to overthrow and to destroy and to afflict, so will I watch over them to build and to plant, says Yahweh.

29 In those days they shall say no more, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge.

30 But everyone shall die for his own iniquity: every man who eats the sour grapes, his teeth shall be set on edge.

31 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband to them, says Yahweh.

33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says Yahweh: I will put my law in their inward parts, and in their heart will I write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people:

34 and they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know Yahweh; for they shall all Know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them, says Yahweh: for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin will I remember no more.

35 Thus says Yahweh, who gives the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, who stirs up the sea, so that its waves roar; Yahweh of Armies is his name:

36 If these ordinances depart from before me, says Yahweh, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me forever.

37 Thus says Yahweh: If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, then will I also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, says Yahweh.

38 Behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that the city shall be built to Yahweh from the tower of Hananel to the gate of the corner.

39 The measuring line shall go out further straight onward to the hill Gareb, and shall turn about to Goah.

40 The whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields to the brook Kidron, to the corner of the horse gate toward the east, shall be holy to Yahweh; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more forever.
