8277. Are sunk in the sea Suph. That this signifies that they have shut themselves up in falsities from evil, is evident from the signification of “to be sunk,” here in the waters of the sea Suph, as being to shut themselves up in falsities from evil, for by the waters of that sea are signified falsities (n. 8137, 8138), and by “to be sunk” is signified to be shut up; for they who are in the hells are shut up and encompassed with falsities, like those who are sunk in waters.
