In Revelation 12:5, 'the male son' signifies truth conceived in the spiritual self, and born in the natural self. This is because conception and birth, in the Word, signify spiritual conception and birth. In general, these relate to what is good and true because nothing else is begotten and born of the Lord as a husband and from the church as a wife. Since 'the woman who brought forth' signifies the new church, it is clear that the male son signifies the doctrine of that church. The doctrine referred to here, is the doctrine of the New Jerusalem, published in London in 1758. It also refers to the doctrine concerning the Lord, and concerning the sacred scripture and a life according to the Ten Commandments.

2623. A son. That this signifies the Divine rational is evident from the signification of a “son.” In the internal sense of the Word a “son” signifies truth (n. 489, 491, 533); and as truth is the chief thing in the rational (n. 2072, 2189), the rational is also signified by a “son;” but here the Divine rational, in which principally there is good, which Isaac, who is the “son,” also represents (concerning which hereafter).
