1 Vậy, Môi-se gọi cả Y-sơ-ra-ên mà nói rằng: Hõi Y-sơ-ra-ên, hãy nghe những luật lệ và mạng lịnh mà ngày nay ta rao truyền nơi lỗ tai các ngươi; các ngươi phải học tập và cẩn thận làm theo những điều đó.

2 Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời chúng ta có lập giao ước cùng chúng ta tại Hô-rếp.

3 Chẳng phải cùng tổ phụ chúng ta mà Ðức Giê-hô-va đã lập giao ước nầy đâu, nhưng cùng hết thảy chúng ta hiện ngày nay còn sống đây.

4 Ðức Giê-hô-va tại trên núi từ giữa lửa, đã đối diện phán cùng các ngươi.

5 Ðang lúc đó, ta đứng giữa Ðức Giê-hô-va và các ngươi, đặng truyền lại lời của Ngài cho các ngươi; vì các ngươi sợ lửa, không lên trên núi. Ngài phán rằng:

6 Ta là Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi, đã rút ngươi ra khỏi xứ Ê-díp-tô, tức là khỏi nhà nô lệ.

7 Trước mặt ta ngươi chớ có các thần khác.

8 Ngươi chớ làm tượng chạm cho mình, cũng chớ làm tượng nào giống như những vật trên trời cao kia, hoặc ở nơi đất thấp nầy, hoặc trong nước dưới đất.

9 Ngươi chớ quì lạy trước các hình tượng đó, và cũng đừng hầu việc chúng nó; vì ta là Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi, tức là Ðức Chúa Trời kỵ tà, hễ ai ghét ta, ta sẽ nhơn tội tổ phụ phạt lại con cháu đến ba bốn đời,

10 và sẽ làm ơn đến ngàn đời cho những kẻ yêu mến ta và giữ các điều răn ta.

11 Ngươi chớ lấy danh của Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi mà làm chơi; vì Ðức Giê-hô-va không cầm bằng vô tội kẻ nào lấy danh Ngài mà làm chơi.

12 Hãy giữ ngày nghỉ đặng làm nên thánh, y như Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi đã phán dặn ngươi.

13 Ngươi hãy làm hết công việc mình trong sáu ngày;

14 nhưng ngày thứ bảy là ngày nghỉ của Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi: chớ làm một công việc nào hết, hoặc ngươi, con trai con gái, tôi trai tớ gái của ngươi, hoặc bò, lừa, hoặc một trong các súc vật của ngươi, hay là khách ở trong nhà ngươi, hầu cho tôi trai và tớ gái ngươi cũng được nghỉ như ngươi.

15 Khá nhớ rằng ngươi đã làm tôi mọi nơi xứ Ê-díp-tô, và Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi dùng tay quyền năng giơ thẳng ra đem ngươi ra khỏi đó; bởi cớ ấy cho nên Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi có dặn biểu ngươi phải giữ ngày nghỉ.

16 Hãy hiếu kính cha mẹ ngươi, như Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi có phán dặn, hầu cho ngươi được sống lâu và có phước trên đất mà Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời ngươi ban cho.

17 Ngươi chớ giết người.

18 Ngươi chớ phạm tội tà dâm.

19 Ngươi chớ trộm cướp.

20 Ngươi chớ làm chứng dối cho kẻ lân cận mình.

21 Ngươi chớ tham vợ của kẻ lân cận mình; chớ tham nhà của người, hoặc ruộng, tôi trai tớ gái, bò, lừa hay là vật chi thuộc về kẻ lân cận ngươi.

22 Tại trên núi, giữa lửa, mây và sự tối tăm, Ðức Giê-hô-va có dùng tiếng lớn phán những lời nầy cho cả hội các ngươi, Ngài không thêm chi hết; đoạn Ngài ghi các lời đó trên hai bảng đá, và trao cho ta.

23 Vả, trong khi cả núi phát lửa, các ngươi vừa nghe tiếng từ giữa nơi tối tăm phán ra, thì những quan trưởng của các chi phái, và những trưởng lão các ngươi đến gần ta mà nói rằng:

24 Kìa, Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời chúng tôi đã tỏ ra sự vinh hiển và sự oai nghiêm Ngài cho chúng tôi, và chúng tôi có nghe tiếng Ngài từ giữa lửa phán ra; ngày nay chúng tôi thấy rằng Ðức Chúa Trời có phán cùng loài người và loài người vẫn còn sống.

25 Nhưng bây giờ, cớ sao chúng tôi phải chết? vì đám lửa lớn nầy sẽ tiêu diệt chúng tôi hết. Ví bằng chúng tôi còn có nghe tiếng của Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời chúng tôi, thì chúng tôi phải chết.

26 Vì trong loài người, có ai đã nghe tiếng Ðức Chúa Trời sanh hoạt từ giữa lửa phán ra, như chúng tôi mà vẫn còn sống?

27 Vậy, ông hãy đi đến gần, nghe mọi điều Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời chúng tôi sẽ phán, rồi hãy truyền lại cho chúng tôi mọi điều Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời chúng tôi sẽ nghe và làm theo.

28 Ðang khi các ngươi bàn cùng ta, Ðức Giê-hô-va nghe những lời của các ngươi, nên phán cùng ta rằng: Ta có nghe những lời dân nầy bàn cùng ngươi; chúng nó nói như vậy lấy làm thậm phải.

29 Ồ! chớ chi dân nầy thường có một lòng kính sợ ta, hằng giữ theo các điều răn ta như thế, để chúng nó và con cháu chúng nó được phước đời đời!

30 Hãy đi nói cùng dân sự rằng: Khá trở về trại mình;

31 còn ngươi, hãy ở lại đây với ta, ta sẽ truyền các điều răn, luật lệ, và mạng lịnh mà ngươi sẽ dạy lại cho, để chúng nó làm theo các điều đó trong xứ ta sẽ ban cho họ nhận lấy.

32 Vậy, các ngươi khá cẩn thận làm theo, y như Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời các ngươi đã phán dặn các ngươi; chớ xây qua bên hữu, hoặc qua bên tả.

33 Các ngươi khá đi theo trọn đường mà Giê-hô-va Ðức Chúa Trời các ngươi đã chỉ cho, để các ngươi được sống, hưởng phước, và ở lâu dài trong xứ mà mình sẽ nhận được.

1298. 'They had brick for stone' means that they had falsity in place of truth. This is clear from the meaning of 'brick' as falsity, dealt with just above, and also from the meaning of 'stone' in the broad sense as truth, dealt with already in 643. The reason 'stones' meant truth was that the most ancient people used to mark out boundaries by means of stones and raise up stones to testify that something was so, that is, was the truth. This is clear from the stone which Jacob set up as a pillar, Genesis 28:22; 35:14; from the pillar of stones placed between Laban and Jacob, Genesis 31:46-47, 52; and from the altar which the children of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh erected beside the Jordan as an altar of witness, Joshua 22:10, 28, 34. Consequently 'stones' in the Word means truths, so much so that not only the stones of the altar but also the precious stones in the shoulder-pieces of Aaron's ephod and in the breastplate of judgement meant the holy truths of love.

[2] Regarding the altar, when sacrificial worship on altars was introduced, an altar in that case meant representative worship of the Lord in general. 'The stones' themselves however meant the holy truths belonging to that worship. This was why it was commanded that the altar had to be built of whole and not of hewn stones, and why it was forbidden to use any iron tool on them, Deuteronomy 27:5-7; Joshua 8:31. The reason was that hewn stones, and those on which an iron tool had been used, meant artificialities and thus fabrications in worship. That is to say, they meant things that derive from the proprium, or from the inventions of man's own thought and heart, which was to profane worship, as is clearly stated in Exodus 20:25. For the same reason no tool of iron was used on the stones of the Temple, 1 Kings 6:7.

[3] That the precious stones set in the shoulder-pieces of Aaron's ephod and in the breastplate of judgement in a similar way meant holy truths has been shown already in 114. This is clear also in Isaiah,

Behold, I will set your stones in carbuncle and lay your foundations in sapphires; and I will make your suns (windows) of ruby, and your gates into precious stones, and all your border into pleasant stones And all your sons will be taught by Jehovah, and great will be the peace of your sons. Isaiah 54:11-13

The stones mentioned here stand for holy truths, and this is why it is said that 'all your sons will be taught by Jehovah'. It is also the reason why it is said in John that the foundations of the wall of the city, holy Jerusalem, were adorned with every kind of precious stone, which are each mentioned by name, Revelation 21:19-20. 'The holy Jerusalem' stands for the Lord's kingdom in heaven and on earth, the foundations of which kingdom are holy truths. Holy truths were similarly meant by the tables of stone on which the commandments of the Law, or Ten Commandments, were written. This was why they were made of stone or had a stone base, concerning which see Exodus 24:12; 31:18; 34:1; Deuteronomy 5:22; 10:1; for the commandments themselves are nothing else than truths of faith.

[4] Now because stones in ancient times meant truths, and because later on when worship on pillars, on altars, and in the Temple began, pillars, altars, and the Temple meant holy truths, the Lord also is therefore called 'a Stone': In Moses,

The Mighty One of Jacob - from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel. Genesis 49:24.

In Isaiah,

The Lord Jehovih said, I am laying in Zion for a foundation a Stone, a tested Corner-Stone, precious, of sure foundation. Isaiah 28:16.

In David,

The Stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner Psalms 118:22.

The same is meant in Daniel 2:34-35, 45, by the stone cut out of the rock which smashed Nebuchadnezzar's statue to pieces.

[5] That 'stones' means truths is clear in Isaiah,

By this the iniquity of Jacob will be expiated, and this will be the full fruit to remove his sin, when He makes all the stones of the altar like chalk-stones scattered about. Isaiah 27:9.

'The stones of the altar' stands for truths in worship that have been dissipated. In the same prophet,

Make level the way of the people; level out, level out the highway; gather out the stones. Isaiah 62:10.

'The way' and 'the stones' stand for truths. In Jeremiah,

I am against you, O destroying mountain. I will roll you down from the rocks and I will make you into a mountain of burning. And they will not take from you a stone for a corner, nor a stone for foundations. Jeremiah 51:25-26.

This refers to Babel. 'A mountain of burning' is self-love. 'Taking no stone from it' means that there is no truth from this source.

Joshua 8

1 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Don't be afraid, neither be dismayed. Take all the people of war with you, and arise, go up to Ai. Behold, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, with his people, his city, and his land.

2 You shall do to Ai and her king as you did to Jericho and her king, except its spoil and its livestock, you shall take for a plunder for yourselves. Set an ambush for the city behind it."

3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up to Ai. Joshua chose thirty thousand men, the mighty men of valor, and sent them out by night.

4 He commanded them, saying, "Behold, you shall lie in ambush against the city, behind the city. Don't go very far from the city, but all of you be ready.

5 I, and all the people who are with me, will approach to the city. It shall happen, when they come out against us, as at the first, that we will flee before them.

6 They will come out after us, until we have drawn them away from the city; for they will say, 'They flee before us, like the first time.' So we will flee before them,

7 and you shall rise up from the ambush, and take possession of the city; for Yahweh your God will deliver it into your hand.

8 It shall be, when you have seized on the city, that you shall set the city on fire. You shall do this according to the word of Yahweh. Behold, I have commanded you."

9 Joshua sent them out; and they went to set up the ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua stayed among the people that night.

10 Joshua rose up early in the morning, mustered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.

11 All the people, even the men of war who were with him, went up, and drew near, and came before the city, and encamped on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between him and Ai.

12 He took about five thousand men, and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.

13 So they set the people, even all the army who was on the north of the city, and their ambush on the west of the city; and Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.

14 It happened, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hurried and rose up early, and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at the time appointed, before the Arabah; but he didn't know that there was an ambush against him behind the city.

15 Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.

16 All the people who were in the city were called together to pursue after them. They pursued Joshua, and were drawn away from the city.

17 There was not a man left in Ai or Beth El who didn't go out after Israel. They left the city open, and pursued Israel.

18 Yahweh said to Joshua, "Stretch out the javelin that is in your hand toward Ai, for I will give it into your hand." Joshua stretched out the javelin that was in his hand toward the city.

19 The ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand, and entered into the city, and took it. They hurried and set the city on fire.

20 When the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way. The people who fled to the wilderness turned back on the pursuers.

21 When Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city, and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again, and killed the men of Ai.

22 The others came out of the city against them, so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side, and some on that side. They struck them, so that they let none of them remain or escape.

23 They captured the king of Ai alive, and brought him to Joshua.

24 It happened, when Israel had made an end of killing all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness in which they pursued them, and they had all fallen by the edge of the sword, until they were consumed, that all Israel returned to Ai, and struck it with the edge of the sword.

25 All that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thousand, even all the men of Ai.

26 For Joshua didn't draw back his hand, with which he stretched out the javelin, until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai.

27 Only the livestock and the spoil of that city Israel took for prey to themselves, according to the word of Yahweh which he commanded Joshua.

28 So Joshua burnt Ai, and made it a heap forever, even a desolation, to this day.

29 He hanged the king of Ai on a tree until the evening, and at the sundown Joshua commanded, and they took his body down from the tree, and threw it at the entrance of the gate of the city, and raised a great heap of stones on it that remains to this day.

30 Then Joshua built an altar to Yahweh, the God of Israel, in Mount Ebal,

31 as Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses, an altar of uncut stones, on which no man had lifted up any iron. They offered burnt offerings on it to Yahweh, and sacrificed peace offerings.

32 He wrote there on the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

33 All Israel, and their elders and officers, and their judges, stood on this side of the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, who carried the ark of Yahweh's covenant, the foreigner as well as the native; half of them in front of Mount Gerizim, and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of Yahweh had commanded at the first, that they should bless the people of Israel.

34 Afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessing and the curse, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua didn't read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who were among them.
