1 At ang Panginoon ay nagsalita kay Moises, na sinasabi,

2 Pakabanalin mo sa akin ang lahat ng mga panganay, anomang nagbubukas ng bahay-bata sa mga anak ni Israel: maging sa tao at maging sa hayop ay akin.

3 At sinabi ni Moises sa bayan, Alalahanin ninyo ang araw na ito na inialis ninyo sa Egipto, sa bahay ng pagkaalipin; sapagka't sa pamamagitan ng lakas ng kamay ay hinango kayo ng Panginoon sa dakong ito, wala sinomang kakain ng tinapay na may lebadura.

4 Sa araw na ito ay umaalis kayo ng buwan ng Abib.

5 At mangyayari, na pagkadala sa iyo ng Panginoon sa lupain ng Cananeo, at ng Hetheo, at ng Amorrheo, at ng Hebreo, at ng Jebuseo, na kaniyang isinumpa sa iyong mga magulang, na ibibigay sa iyo, na lupang binubukalan ng gatas at pulot ay iyong ipangingilin ang paglilingkod na ito sa buwang ito.

6 Pitong araw na kakain ka ng tinapay na walang lebadura, at sa ikapitong araw ay magiging isang kapistahan sa Panginoon.

7 Tinapay na walang lebadura ang kakanin sa loob ng pitong araw, at huwag makakakita sa iyo, ng tinapay na may lebadura, ni makakakita ng lebadura sa iyo, sa lahat ng iyong mga hangganan.

8 At sasaysayin mo sa iyong anak sa araw na yaon, na iyong sasabihin: Dahil sa ginawa ng Panginoon sa akin nang ako'y umalis sa Egipto.

9 At sa iyo'y magiging pinakatanda sa ibabaw ng iyong kamay, at pinakaalaala sa pagitan ng iyong mga mata, upang ang kautusan ng Panginoon ay sumaiyong bibig: sapagka't sa pamamagitan ng malakas na kamay, ay inalis ka ng Panginoon sa Egipto.

10 Isasagawa mo nga ang palatuntunang ito sa kapanahunan nito taon taon.

11 At mangyayari, pagkadala sa iyo ng Panginoon sa lupain ng Cananeo, gaya ng isinumpa sa iyo at sa iyong mga magulang, at pagkabigay niyaon sa iyo,

12 Ay ihihiwalay mo para sa Panginoon yaong lahat na nagbubukas ng bahay-bata, at bawa't panganay na mayroon ka na mula sa hayop; ang mga lalake, ay sa Panginoon.

13 At bawa't panganay sa asno ay tutubusin mo ng isang kordero; at kung hindi mo tutubusin, ay iyo ngang babaliin ang kaniyang leeg: at lahat ng mga panganay na lalake sa iyong mga anak ay iyong tutubusin.

14 At mangyayari, na pagtatanong sa iyo ng iyong anak sa panahong darating, na sasabihin, Ano ito? na iyong sasabihin sa kaniya: Sa pamamagitan ng lakas ng kamay ay inilabas tayo ng Panginoon sa Egipto, sa bahay ng pagkaalipin.

15 At nangyari, nang magmatigas si Faraon na hindi kami tulutang yumaon, ay pinatay ng Panginoon ang lahat ng mga panganay sa lupain ng Egipto, ang panganay ng tao at gayon din ang panganay ng hayop: kaya't aking inihahain sa Panginoon ang lahat ng nagbubukas ng bahay-bata na mga lalake; nguni't lahat ng panganay ng aking anak ay aking tinutubos.

16 At magiging pinakatanda sa iyong kamay, at pinakaalaala sa pagitan ng iyong mga mata: sapagka't sa pamamagitan ng lakas ng kamay ay inilabas tayo ng Panginoon sa Egipto.

17 At nangyari, nang tulutan ni Faraon na ang bayan ay yumaon, na hindi sila pinatnubayan ng Dios sa daang patungo sa lupain ng mga Filisteo, bagaman malapit; sapagka't sinabi ng Dios, Baka sakaling ang bayan ay magsisi pagkakita ng pagbabaka, at magsipagbalik sa Egipto:

18 Kundi pinatnubayan ng Dios ang bayan sa palibot, sa daang patungo sa ilang sa tabi ng Dagat na Mapula: at ang mga anak ni Israel ay sumampang nangakasakbat mula sa lupain ng Egipto.

19 At dinala ni Moises ang mga buto ni Jose: sapagka't kaniyang ipinanumpang mahigpit sa mga anak ni Israel, na sinasabi, Tunay na dadalawin kayo ng Dios; at inyong isasampa ang aking mga buto mula rito na kasama ninyo.

20 At sila'y naglakbay mula sa Succoth, at humantong sa Etham, sa hangganan ng ilang.

21 At ang Panginoon ay nangunguna sa kanila sa araw, sa isang haliging ulap, upang patnubayan sila sa daan; at sa gabi, ay sa isang haliging apoy, upang tanglawan sila; upang sila'y makapaglakad sa araw at sa gabi.

22 Ang haliging ulap sa araw at ang haliging apoy sa gabi ay hindi humihiwalay sa harapan ng bayan.

8093. 'That God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines' means that the Divine saw to it that they should not pass on to the truth of faith that does not spring from good. This is clear from the meaning of 'God did not lead them by the way' as the Divine saw to it that they should not pass on to, for 'leading', when done by God, means providence, and 'the way' means truth, 627, 2333, in this instance passing on to it; and from the representation of 'the Philistines' as those who have a knowledge of the cognitions of faith but do not lead a life of charity, dealt with in 1197, 1198, 3412, 3413, thus those who possess the truth of faith that does not spring from good. The fact that 'the Philistines' and 'the land of the Philistines' have this meaning may be recognized from places in the Word where they are mentioned, in particular in Jeremiah 47:1-end, where they are described, also in Joel 3:5-6, as well as from the historical accounts in the Word referring to wars between the children of Israel and the Philistines, to the subjection of the children of Israel by the Philistines and then of the Philistines by the children of Israel. By 'the Philistines' in these places those who champion separated faith are represented, that is, people for whom the knowledge of cognitions of faith is all-important but not a life led in accordance with that knowledge, consequently people who teach and believe that a person is saved by faith alone.

[2] This particular belief about faith alone or separated faith is not new or something that belongs solely to the present time. It had come to exist in the ancient Churches, growing ever stronger along with evil in life. It is also described in various places in the Word, but by means of names, by Cain' first, in that he killed his brother Abel, 337, 340, 1179. In the internal representative sense of that story 'Cain' is that kind of faith, while 'Abel' is charity. Such faith is also described by 'Ham', when cursed by his father, 1062, 1063; after that by 'Reuben', in that he went up to his father's bed, 3870, 4601, and by 'Simeon and Levi', in that they killed Hamor and the men of Shechem and were for that reason cursed by their father, 3870, 6352. That faith is also described by 'the Egyptians' and by 'their firstborn', in that the latter were killed, 7766, 7778, and the former drowned in the Sea Suph. It is described too by 'the Philistines', 3412, 3413, and also by 'Tyre and Sidon', in various places in the Prophets; there a knowledge of the cognitions of faith is meant by 'the Philistines', and the cognitions themselves, interior and exterior, by 'Tyre and Sidon'. Lastly such faith is represented by 'Peter' when he denied the Lord three times, 6000, 6073(end). 1159. 'Every one according to his tongue, according to their families, as to their nations' means that they were ranged according to the character of each one, 'according to his tongue' meaning according to each one's individual belief, 'according to their families' meaning according to uprightness, 'as to their nations' meaning as to both belief and uprightness in general. This becomes clear from the meaning of 'tongue', and 'families', and 'nations' in the Word, which will in the Lord's Divine mercy be discussed later on. The reason why in the internal sense 'tongue' means individual belief, and so basic assumptions and persuasions, is that the tongue corresponds to the understanding part of man's mind, that is, to his thought, in the way that an effect corresponds to its cause. Such is the case not only with the influx of a person's thoughts into the movements of the tongue in speaking, but also with the influx of heaven, about which something from personal experience will in the Lord's Divine mercy be stated elsewhere.

[2] That 'families' in the internal sense means uprightness, as well as charity and love, arises from the fact that all things belonging to mutual love are in the heavens like blood relatives and relatives by marriage, and so are like families, see 685. This is why in the Word things belonging to love or charity are described as 'houses' and also as 'families', points which there is no need to pause over and confirm here. That 'a house' has this meaning, see 710.

[3] That 'nations' means both belief and uprightness in general is clear from the meaning of 'a nation' or 'nations' in the Word. In the good sense nations mean things of the new will and understanding, and so mean the goods of love and the truths of faith. But in the contrary sense evils and falsities are meant. The same applies to houses, families, and tongues, as may be confirmed from very many places in the Word. The reason is that the Most Ancient Church was distinguished into separate houses, families, and nations. A married couple with their children, together with menservants and maidservants, constituted one house. A number of houses in close proximity in turn constituted one family, while a number of families constituted a nation. Consequently nations meant all families taken together as a whole. The same applies in heaven, but all relationships there are determined by love to and faith in the Lord, 685.

[4] This then is how nations come to mean what they do in the internal sense, namely that which is general embracing things both of the will and of the understanding, or what amounts to the same, both the things of love and those of faith. Their meaning however depends on the families and houses of which they consist. For these points, see also what has been stated already in 470, 471, 483 From these considerations it is clear that 'nations' means both belief and uprightness in general, and that 'everyone according to his tongue, according to their families, and as to their nations' means the disposition of each person, family, and nation whose worship was derived from the Ancient Church.
