1 IL Signore parlò ancora a Mosè, dicendo:

2 Parla a tutta la raunanza de’ figliuoli d’Israele, e di’ loro: Siate santi; perciocchè io, il Signore Iddio vostro, son santo.

3 Porti ciascuno riverenza a sua madre, e a suo padre; e osservate i miei Sabati. Io sono il Signore Iddio vostro.

4 Non vi rivolgete agl’idoli, e non vi fate dii di getto. Io sono il Signore Iddio vostro.

5 E quando voi sacrificherete al Signore sacrificio da render grazie, sacrificatelo in maniera ch’egli sia gradito per voi.

6 Mangisi il giorno stesso che voi l’avrete sacrificato, e il giorno seguente; ma ciò che ne sarà avanzato fino al terzo giorno sia bruciato col fuoco.

7 E se pur se ne mangerà il terzo giorno, sarà fracidume; non sarà gradito.

8 E chiunque ne avrà mangiato porterà la sua iniquità; perciocchè egli avrà profanata una cosa sacra al Signore; e però sia quella persona ricisa da’ suoi popoli.

9 E quando voi mieterete la ricolta della vostra terra, non mietere affatto il canto del campo; e non ispigolar le spighe tralasciate dalla tua ricolta.

10 E non racimolar la tua vigna, nè raccoglierne i granelli; lasciali a’ poveri, e ai forestieri. Io sono il Signore Iddio vostro.

11 Niuno di voi rubi, nè menta, nè frodi il suo prossimo.

12 E non giurate falsamente per lo mio Nome, sì che tu profani il Nome dell’Iddio tuo. Io sono il Signore.

13 Non oppressare il tuo prossimo, e non rapirgli il suo; il pagamento dell’opera del tuo mercenario non dimori appresso di te la notte, infino alla mattina.

14 Non maledire il sordo, e non porre intoppo davanti al cieco; ma temi l’Iddio tuo. Io sono il Signore.

15 Non fate iniquità in giudicio; non aver riguardo alla qualità del povero; e non portare onore alla qualità del grande; rendi giusto giudicio al tuo prossimo.

16 Non andare sparlando d’altrui fra i tuoi popoli; e non levarti contro al sangue del tuo prossimo. Io sono il Signore.

17 Non odiare il tuo fratello nel tuo cuore; riprendi pure il tuo prossimo, e non caricarti di peccato per lui.

18 Non far vendetta, e non serbare odio a quei del tuo popolo; anzi ama il tuo prossimo come te stesso. Io sono il Signore.

19 Osservate i miei statuti: Non far coprire la tua bestia da altra di diversa specie; non seminare il tuo campo di diverse specie di semenze; e non portare addosso veste contesta di diverse materie.

20 Se alcuno giace carnalmente con donna, la quale essendo serva, sia stata sposata ad un uomo, senza essere stata riscattata, nè essere stata messa in libertà, sieno amendue castigati di scopatura; non sieno fatti morire; perciocchè colei non è stata messa in libertà.

21 E adduca colui al Signore, all’entrata del Tabernacolo della convenenza, un montone per sacrificio per la sua colpa.

22 E faccia il sacerdote, col montone del sacrificio per la colpa, purgamento davanti al Signore, per lui, del peccato ch’egli ha commesso; e il peccato ch’egli ha commesso gli sia perdonato.

23 Ora, quando voi sarete entrati nel paese, e avrete piantato qualche albero fruttifero, toglietegli il prepuzio, cioè il suo frutto; tenete quell’albero per incirconciso per tre anni; non mangisene del frutto.

24 E l’anno quarto sia tutto il frutto suo cosa sacra al Signore, da rendergli lode.

25 Ma l’anno quinto mangiate del suo frutto, cogliendo la sua rendita per voi. Io sono il Signore Iddio vostro.

26 Non mangiate nulla col sangue; non usate augurii, nè pronostichi.

27 Non vi tagliate a tondo i capelli da’ lati del capo; e non vi guastate i canti della barba.

28 Parimente non vi fate alcuna tagliatura nelle carni per un morto, e non vi fate bollatura alcuna addosso. Io sono il Signore.

29 Non contaminar la tua figliuola, recandola a fornicare; e il paese non fornichi, e non si empia di scelleratezze.

30 Osservate i miei Sabati; e riverite il mio Santuario. Io sono il Signore.

31 Non vi rivolgete agli spiriti di Pitone, e agl’indovini; e non li domandate, per contaminarvi con essi. Io sono il Signore Iddio vostro.

32 Levati su davanti al canuto, e onora l’aspetto del vecchio; e temi dell’Iddio tuo. Io sono il Signore.

33 E quando alcun forestiere dimorerà con voi nel vostro paese, non gli fate alcun torto.

34 Siavi il forestiere, che dimorerà con voi, come uno di voi che sia natio del paese; amalo come te stesso; conciossiachè voi siate stati forestieri nel paese di Egitto. Io sono il Signore Iddio vostro.

35 Non fate alcuna iniquità in giudicio, nè in misura di spazio, nè in peso, nè in misura di contenenza.

36 Abbiate bilance giuste, pesi giusti, efa giusto, e hin giusto. Io sono il Signore Iddio vostro, che vi ho tratti fuor del paese di Egitto.

37 Osservate adunque tutti i miei statuti e tutte le mie leggi, e mettetele in opera. Io sono il Signore.

   


To many Protestant and Evangelical Italians, the Bibles translated by Giovanni Diodati are an important part of their history. Diodati’s first Italian Bible edition was printed in 1607, and his second in 1641. He died in 1649. Throughout the 1800s two editions of Diodati’s text were printed by the British Foreign Bible Society. This is the more recent 1894 edition, translated by Claudiana.

196. And they shall walk with me in white, for they are worthy. That this signifies the spiritual life which they have procured by means of the knowledges of truth and good from the Word, is evident from the signification of walking, as being to live (concerning which see above, n. 97), and from the signification of in white, as being in truths, for whiteness and brightness in the Word are said of truths, concerning which we shall speak presently. By walking with Me in white, is signified spiritual life for spiritual life is the life of truth, that is, life according to truths, or according to the precepts of the Lord in the Word; also from the signification of for they are worthy, as being because they have spiritual life from the Lord. In the measure that any one receives from the Lord, in the same measure he is worthy, but in the measure that he receives from himself, that is, from his own, or from his proprium, in the same measure he is not worthy. Nothing else constitutes spiritual life with man but the knowledge of truth and good from the Word applied to life; and these are applied to life when a man makes them the laws of his life; for thus he looks to the Lord in everything and the Lord is present with him, and gives him intelligence and wisdom, with their affection and delight. For the Lord is in His own truths with man, because every truth proceeds from Him; and what proceeds from the Lord is His, so that it is Himself; therefore the Lord says,

"I am the truth and the life" (John 14:6).

"He that doeth truth cometh to the light, because [his works] are wrought in God" (John 3:21).

"The Word was with God, and God was the Word. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. He was the true light which lighteth every man. And the Word was made flesh" (John 1:1, 2, 4, 9, 14).

The Lord is called the Word because the Word signifies Divine truth, and He is also called the light, because Divine truth is the light of heaven; He is also called the life, because everything that lives, lives from that light; this also is the source of intelligence and wisdom to angels, in which their life consists. He who supposes that life is from any other source than the Divine which proceeds from the Lord, which in heaven is called Divine truth, and appears there as light, is much deceived. It is therefore evident how it is to be understood that God was the Word, that in Him was life, and that the life was the light of men.

[2] The reason why white in the Word is said of truths, is, because Divine truth is the light of heaven, as just said, and from the light of heaven arise whiteness and brightness. This is why,

When the Lord was transfigured before Peter, James, and John, "His face appeared as the sun, and His garments were white as the light" (Matthew 17:2), and as "white, and glistering" (Luke 9:29), "shining white as snow, so as no fuller on earth could whiten them" (Mark 9:3).

Also why

The raiment of the angels at the sepulchre of the Lord was white as snow (Matthew 28:3), and shining (Luke 24:4);

Why there appeared to John seven angels out of the temple clothed in linen clean and shining (Apoc. 15:6);

Why those who stood before the throne of the Lamb were arrayed in white robes (Apoc. 6:11; 7:9, 13, 14; 19:8)

Why the army of Him who sat on the white horse followed Him on white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean (Apoc. 14:14);

And why also the garments of Aaron were of linen, and he put them on when he went within the veil to the mercy seat (Leviticus 16:1-5, 32).

Linen, from its whiteness, also signifies truth (see Arcana Coelestia 7601, 9959). Because white signifies truth, and truths reveal falsities and evils in man, and so purify him, it is therefore said in David,

"Behold thou desirest truth in the reins, and in the hidden part thou makest me to know wisdom. Thou shalt purify me with hyssop that I may be clean; thou shalt wash me and I shall be whiter than snow" (Psalms 51:6, 7).

[3] Because the Nazarite represented the Lord as to Divine truth in ultimates, which upon earth is the Word in the sense of the letter, and this was falsified and perverted with the Jews, therefore it is said concerning them in the Lamentations,

"Her Nazarites were whiter than snow, they were brighter than milk, their bones were more ruddy than pearls, their polishing was of sapphire; but their form is obscured, that they are not known in the streets" (4:7, 8).

(That the Nazarites represented the Lord as to Divine truth, may be seen, Arcana Coelestia 6437; that the crown of the head of the Nazarite denotes Divine truth in ultimates, or the Word in the letter, n. 6437, 9407. That the hair which was of the Nazariteship, and was called the crown of the head of the Nazarite, denotes Divine truth in ultimates, n. 3301, 5247, 10044. That Divine truth in ultimates has strength and power, n. 9836; that hence the strength of Samson was in his hair, n. 3301.)

[4] Hence it is evident what is signified by the Nazarites being whiter than snow, and brighter than milk, and by the sapphire being the polishing of their bones, but that their form was obscured, so that they were not known in the streets. For whiteness and brightness signify Divine truth in its light, as said above; and bones, because they are the ultimates in man, being the supports of his whole body, correspond to the ultimates in heaven. For all things in man corresponding to all things in heaven (see the work, Heaven and Hell 87-102. Bones therefore signify the ultimates in the spiritual world, which are also the ultimates of Divine truth or the Word, Arcana Coelestia 5560-5564, 8005. Sapphire signifies what is translucent from truth, see n. 9407; and, not being known in the streets signifies Divine truth no longer appearing; for streets signify where the truths of doctrine are, n. 2336).

2761. That 'a white horse' means an understanding of the Word as regards its interior contents, or what amounts to the same, as regards the internal sense of the Word is clear from the meaning of 'a horse' as the understanding part of the mind. In prophetical parts of the Word 'a horse' and 'a rider' are referred to many times, but up to now nobody has known that 'a horse' means the understanding part of the mind, and 'a rider' one who has intelligence, as in the prophecy of Jacob, who by then was Israel, concerning Dan,

Dan will be a serpent on the road, a darting serpent on the path, biting the horse's heels; and its rider will fall backwards. I am awaiting Your salvation, O Jehovah. Genesis 49:17-18.

'A serpent' means one who reasons about Divine arcana on the basis of sensory evidence and factual knowledge, see 195. 'Road' and 'path' mean truth, 627, 2333, 'heel' means the lowest part of the natural, 259, 'horse' an understanding of the Word, and 'rider' one who teaches. From this it is evident what these prophetical words mean, namely that one who reasons about the truths of faith on the basis of sensory evidence and factual knowledge is interested solely in the lowest things belonging to the natural world and so believes nothing, which is 'falling backwards'. And this is why the words 'I am awaiting Your salvation, O Jehovah' are added.

[2] In Habakkuk,

O God, You ride on Your horses, Your chariots are salvation. You made Your horses to tread in the sea. Habakkuk 3:8, 15.

Here 'horses' stands for Divine Truths that are in the Word, 'chariots' for doctrine drawn from them, 'the sea' for cognitions, 28, 2120. And since these belong to an understanding of the Word from God, it is said, 'You made Your horses to tread in the sea'. Here, as in the quotation above from the Book of Revelation, horses are attributed to God, but this attribution would not be possible if they did not have such a meaning.

[3] In David,

Sing to God, sing praises to His name; exalt Him who rides on the clouds by His name lain. Psalms 68:4.

'Riding on the clouds' stands for an understanding of the Word as regards its interior contents or internal sense; for 'clouds' means the Word in the letter which has the internal sense within it - see the Preface to Genesis 18, where the meaning of 'the Lord's coming in the clouds of heaven with power and glory' is explained.

[4] In the same author,

Jehovah bowed the heavens and came down; and thick darkness was under His feet, and He rode on a cherub. Psalms 18:9-10.

'Thick darkness' here stands for clouds, 'riding on a cherub' for the Lord's providence preventing man's entering of himself into the mysteries of faith that are in the Word, 308. In Zechariah,

On that day there will be on the horse-bells, Holiness to Jehovah. Zechariah 14:20. 'The horse-bells' stands for an understanding of the spiritual things of the Word, which are holy.

[5] In Jeremiah,

There will enter through the gates of this city kings and princes seated on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they and their princes, the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem. And this city will be inhabited for ever. Jeremiah 17:25-26; 22:4.

'The city of Jerusalem' stands for the Lord's spiritual kingdom and Church. 'Kings' stands for truths, 1672, 2015, 2069, 'princes' for the first and foremost commandments of truth, 1482, 2089, 'David' for the Lord, 1888, 'men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem' for those in whom there exists good that flows from love, charity, and faith, 2268, 2451, 2712. Thus 'riding in chariots and on horses' stands for being furnished with the doctrine of truth received from an internal understanding of the Word.

[6] In Isaiah, Then will you take delight in Jehovah and I will cause you to ride over the high places of the earth and cause you to eat the heritage of Jacob. Isaiah 58:14.

'Riding over the high places of the earth' stands for intelligence. In David,

A love song. Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one, [gird on] your glory and majesty. And in your majesty go on, ride on the word of truth, and of the meekness of righteousness. And your right hand will teach you marvellous things. Psalms 45:1, 3-4.

'Riding on the word of truth' stands plainly for intelligence based on truth, 'on the word of the meekness of righteousness' for wisdom based on good.

[7] In Zechariah,

On that day, said Jehovah, I will strike every horse with panic, and its rider with madness. And on the house of Judah I will open My eyes, and every horse of the peoples I will strike with blindness. Zechariah 12:4.

Here also 'horse' plainly stands for the understanding which was to be 'stricken with panic and blindness', and 'rider' for him with intelligence who was to be 'stricken with madness'. In Hosea,

Take away all iniquity and accept that which is good, and we will render the praises 1 of our lips. Asshur will not save us, we will not ride on horses, and we will no more say Our God' to the work of our hands. Hosea 14:2-3.

'Asshur' stands for reasoning, 119, 1186, 'horse' for self-intelligence. 'Horse' and 'rider' are referred to in very many other places besides these.
