Ezechiël 26

1 En het gebeurde in het elfde jaar, op den eersten der maand, dat des HEEREN woord tot mij geschiedde, zeggende:

2 Mensenkind! daarom dat Tyrus van Jeruzalem gezegd heeft: Heah! zij is verbroken, de poort der volken; zij is tot mij omgewend; ik zal vervuld worden, zij is verwoest!

3 Daarom, alzo zegt de Heere Heere: Ziet, Ik wil aan u, o Tyrus! en Ik zal vele heidenen tegen u doen opkomen, alsof Ik de zee met haar golven deed opkomen.

4 Die zullen de muren van Tyrus verderven, en haar torens afbreken; ja, Ik zal haar stof van haar wegvagen, en zal haar tot een gladde steenrots maken.

5 Zij zal in het midden der zee zijn tot uitspreiding van netten; want Ik heb het gesproken, spreekt de Heere Heere; en zij zal den heidenen ten roof worden.

6 En haar dochteren, die in het veld zijn, zullen met het zwaard gedood worden; en zij zullen weten, dat Ik de HEERE ben.

7 Want alzo zegt de Heere Heere: Ziet, Ik zal Nebukadrezar, den koning van Babel, den koning der koningen, van het noorden, tegen Tyrus brengen, met paarden en met wagenen, en met ruiteren, en krijgs vergaderingen, en veel volks.

8 Hij zal uw dochteren op het veld met het zwaard doden, en hij zal sterkten tegen u maken, en een wal tegen u opwerpen, en rondassen tegen u opheffen.

9 En hij zal muurbrekers tegen uw muren stellen, en uw torens met zijn zwaarden afbreken.

10 Vanwege de menigte zijner paarden zal u derzelver stof bedekken; uw muren zullen beven vanwege het gedruis der ruiteren, en wielen, en wagenen, als hij door uw poorten zal intrekken, gelijk door de ingangen ener doorbrokene stad.

11 Hij zal met de hoeven zijner paarden al uw straten vertreden; uw volk zal hij met het zwaard doden, en elk een van de kolommen uwer sterkten zal ter aarde nederstorten.

12 En zij zullen uw vermogen roven, en uw koopmanswaren plunderen, en uw muren afbreken, en uw kostelijke huizen omwerpen; en uw stenen, en uw hout, en uw stof zullen zij in het midden der wateren werpen.

13 Zo zal Ik het gedeun uwer liederen doen ophouden, en het geklank uwer harpen zal niet meer gehoord worden.

14 Ja, Ik zal u maken tot een gladde steenrots; gij zult zijn tot uitspreiding der netten, gij zult niet meer gebouwd worden; want Ik, de HEERE, heb het gesproken, spreekt de HEERE HEERE.

15 Alzo zegt de Heere Heere tot Tyrus: Zullen niet de eilanden van het geluid uws vals beven, als de dodelijk verwonde zal kermen, wanneer men in het midden van u schrikkelijk zal moorden?

16 En alle vorsten der zee zullen afdalen van hun tronen, en hun mantels van zich doen, en hun gestikte klederen uittrekken; met sidderingen zullen zij bekleed worden, op de aarde zullen zij nederzitten, en te elken ogenblik sidderen, en over u ontzet zijn;

17 En zij zullen een klaaglied over u opheffen, en tot u zeggen: Hoe zijt gij uit de zeeen vergaan, gij welbewoonde, gij beroemde stad, die sterk geweest is ter zee, zij en haar inwoners; die hunlieder schrik gaven aan allen, die in haar woonden!

18 Nu zullen de eilanden sidderen ten dage uws vals; ja, de eilanden, die in de zee zijn, zullen beroerd worden vanwege uw uitgang.

19 Want alzo zegt de Heere Heere: Als Ik u zal stellen tot een verwoeste stad, gelijk de steden, die niet bewoond worden; als Ik een afgrond over u zal doen opkomen, en de grote wateren u zullen overdekken,

20 Dan zal Ik u doen nederdalen met degenen die in den kuil nederdalen tot het oude volk, en zal u doen nederliggen in de onderste plaatsen der aarde, in de woeste plaatsen, die van ouds geweest zijn, met degenen, die in den kuil nederdalen, opdat gij niet bewoond wordt; en Ik zal het sieraad herstellen in het land der levenden.

21 Maar u zal Ik tot een groten schrik stellen, en gij zult er niet meer zijn; als gij gezocht wordt, zo zult gij niet meer gevonden worden in eeuwigheid, spreekt de Heere Heere.

774. "Every kind of thyine wood, 1 every kind of ivory vessel." This symbolically means that these Roman Catholics no longer have these because they do not have any of the natural goods and truths to which such things correspond.

This statement is similar to the ones explained in nos. 772 and 773 above, the only difference being that the valuables named first mean spiritual goods and truths (as explained in no. 772 above), and that those named second mean celestial goods and truths (as explained just above in no. 773), while those named now - thyine wood and ivory vessel - mean natural goods and truths.

[2] To explain: There are three degrees of wisdom and love, and so three degrees of truth and goodness. We call the first degree celestial, the second spiritual, and the third natural. These three degrees are present from birth in every person, and they are present in general also in heaven and in the church. Because of this there are three heavens, a highest one, an intermediate one, and a lowest one, altogether distinct from each other in accordance with these degrees. The same is true of the Lord's church on earth. But this is not the place to explain the nature of the church with people in the celestial degree, with people in the spiritual degree, and with people in the natural degree. See instead what we said about them in Angelic Wisdom Regarding Divine Love and Wisdom, Part Three, where we dealt with degrees. Here we will say only that in the case of people coming from Babylon, they have no spiritual goods and truths, no celestial goods and truths, and not even any natural goods and truths.

Spiritual goods and truths are mentioned first, because many of those coming from Babylon can be spiritual, provided they hold the Word holy at heart, as they do with the mouth. But they cannot become celestial, because they do not turn to the Lord, but turn to people living and dead and worship them. It is for this reason that celestial goods and truths are mentioned second.

[3] Thyine wood symbolizes natural good because wood in the Word symbolizes goodness, and stone truth, and thyine wood derives its name from a word meaning two, and the number two also symbolizes goodness.

The good symbolized is natural good, because wood is not a valuable material like gold, silver, precious stones, pearls, fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet. The same is true of stone. The case is similar with ivory, which symbolizes natural truth. Ivory symbolizes natural truth because it is white and can be polished, and because it protrudes from the mouth of an elephant and also constitutes its might. In order for ivory to symbolize the natural truth of the goodness symbolized by thyine wood, the text specifies a vessel of ivory, as a vessel symbolizes something that contains, here truth that contains good.

[4] That wood symbolizes goodness can be seen to some extent from the following considerations: That the bitter waters at Marah were made sweet by casting in something wooden (Exodus 15:25). That the tables of stone on which the Law was written were placed in an ark made of acacia wood (Exodus 25:10-16). That the Temple in Jerusalem was roofed with wood and paneled inside with wood (1 Kings 6:9, 15). And that the altar in the wilderness was made of wood (Exodus 27:1, 6).

It can be seen to some extent also from the following:

...the stone will cry out from the wall, and the beam from the wood answers it. (Habakkuk 2:11)

They will plunder your riches and pillage your merchandise..., and they will cast your stones and your timber... into the midst of the sea. (Ezekiel 26:12)

The prophet Ezekiel was told to take a piece of wood and write on it the names of Judah and the children of Israel, and also on another piece of wood the names of Joseph and Ephraim; and that the Lord Jehovih would make them into one piece of wood (Ezekiel 37:16, 19).

We drink our water in exchange for silver, and our wood comes at a price. (Lamentations 5:4)

If someone goes with his neighbor into a forest..., and the ax head (falls) from the wooden handle...(onto) his neighbor so that he dies, he shall flee to (a city of refuge). (Deuteronomy 19:5)

The latter is said because wood symbolizes goodness, and so because the person did not kill his neighbor out of evil or with evil intention, therefore, but by accident, being impelled by good. And so on elsewhere.

[5] In an opposite sense, however, wood symbolizes something evil or cursed. So for example, they made graven images out of wood and worshiped them (Deuteronomy 4:23-28; Isaiah 37:19; 40:20; Jeremiah 10:3, 8; Ezekiel 20:32). Also, being hanged from a tree was a curse (Deuteronomy 21:22-23).

That ivory symbolizes natural truth can be seen moreover from passages which mention ivory, such as Ezekiel 27:6, 15; Amos 3:15; 6:4; Psalms 45:8.

1 The word of Yahweh came again to me, saying,

2 You, son of man, take up a lamentation over Tyre;

3 and tell Tyre, you who dwell at the entry of the sea, who are the merchant of the peoples to many islands, thus says the Lord Yahweh: You, Tyre, have said, I am perfect in beauty.

4 Your borders are in the heart of the seas; your builders have perfected your beauty.

5 They have made all your planks of fir trees from Senir; they have taken a cedar from Lebanon to make a mast for you.

6 Of the oaks of Bashan have they made your oars; they have made your benches of ivory inlaid in boxwood, from the islands of Kittim.

7 Of fine linen with embroidered work from Egypt was your sail, that it might be to you for a banner; blue and purple from the islands of Elishah was your awning.

8 The inhabitants of Sidon and Arvad were your rowers: your wise men, Tyre, were in you, they were your pilots.

9 The old men of Gebal and the wise men of it were in you your repairers of ship seams: all the ships of the sea with their mariners were in you to deal in your merchandise.

10 Persia and Lud and Put were in your army, your men of war: they hanged the shield and helmet in you; they set forth your comeliness.

11 The men of Arvad with your army were on your walls all around, and valorous men were in your towers; they hanged their shields on your walls all around; they have perfected your beauty.

12 Tarshish was your merchant by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches; with silver, iron, tin, and lead, they traded for your wares.

13 Javan, Tubal, and Meshech, they were your traffickers; they traded the persons of men and vessels of brass for your merchandise.

14 They of the house of Togarmah traded for your wares with horses and war horses and mules.

15 The men of Dedan were your traffickers; many islands were the market of your hand: they brought you in exchange horns of ivory and ebony.

16 Syria was your merchant by reason of the multitude of your handiworks: they traded for your wares with emeralds, purple, and embroidered work, and fine linen, and coral, and rubies.

17 Judah, and the land of Israel, they were your traffickers: they traded for your merchandise wheat of Minnith, and confections, and honey, and oil, and balm.

18 Damascus was your merchant for the multitude of your handiworks, by reason of the multitude of all kinds of riches, with the wine of Helbon, and white wool.

19 Vedan and Javan traded with yarn for your wares: bright iron, cassia, and calamus, were among your merchandise.

20 Dedan was your trafficker in precious cloths for riding.

21 Arabia, and all the princes of Kedar, they were the merchants of your hand; in lambs, and rams, and goats, in these were they your merchants.

22 The traffickers of Sheba and Raamah, they were your traffickers; they traded for your wares with the chief of all spices, and with all precious stones, and gold.

23 Haran and Canneh and Eden, the traffickers of Sheba, Asshur [and] Chilmad, were your traffickers.

24 These were your traffickers in choice wares, in wrappings of blue and embroidered work, and in chests of rich clothing, bound with cords and made of cedar, among your merchandise.

25 The ships of Tarshish were your caravans for your merchandise: and you were replenished, and made very glorious in the heart of the seas.

26 Your rowers have brought you into great waters: the east wind has broken you in the heart of the seas.

27 Your riches, and your wares, your merchandise, your mariners, and your pilots, your repairers of ship seams, and the dealers in your merchandise, and all your men of war, who are in you, with all your company which is in the midst of you, shall fall into the heart of the seas in the day of your ruin.

28 At the sound of the cry of your pilots the suburbs shall shake.

29 All who handled the oar, the mariners, [and] all the pilots of the sea, shall come down from their ships; they shall stand on the land,

30 and shall cause their voice to be heard over you, and shall cry bitterly, and shall cast up dust on their heads, they shall wallow themselves in the ashes:

31 and they shall make themselves bald for you, and clothe them with sackcloth, and they shall weep for you in bitterness of soul with bitter mourning.

32 In their wailing they shall take up a lamentation for you, and lament over you, [saying], Who is there like Tyre, like her who is brought to silence in the midst of the sea?

33 When your wares went forth out of the seas, you filled many peoples; you did enrich the kings of the earth with the multitude of your riches and of your merchandise.

34 In the time that you were broken by the seas in the depths of the waters, your merchandise and all your company did fall in the midst of you.

35 All the inhabitants of the islands are astonished at you, and their kings are horribly afraid; they are troubled in their face.

36 The merchants among the peoples hiss at you; you are become a terror, and you shall nevermore have any being.
