Jonah 1

Სწავლა

And the word of Jehovah was to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

Arise, go to Nineveh, the great city, and proclaim against her; for their evil has come··up before Me.

And Jonah arose to run··away to Tarshish from the face of Jehovah, and went··down··to Joppah; and he found a ship going* to Tarshish; and he gave its hire, and went··down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from before Jehovah.

But Jehovah threw a great wind into the sea, and there was a great tempest in the sea, and the ship was reckoned to be broken.

And the mariners feared, and cried each··man to his god, and threw the vessels that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it from off them. But Jonah had gone··down into the paneled flanks of the ship; and he lay, and was··in··a··deep··sleep.

And the great shipmaster came··near to him, and said to him, What meanest thou, O deep··sleeper? Arise, call to thy God! Perhaps God will reflect on us, and we will not perish.

And they said, a man to his companion, Go and let the lots fall, and we will know for the sake of whom this evil is unto us. And they let the lots fall, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

And said they to him, Tell us, we pray thee, for whose cause this evil is unto us? What is thy work*, and whence dost thou come? What is thy land, and of what people art thou?

And he said to them, I am a Hebrew, and I fear Jehovah, the God of the heavens, who has made the sea and the dry land.

And the men feared with great fear, and said to him, What is this that thou hast done? For the men knew that he ran··away from the face of Jehovah, for he had told them.

And they said to him, What shall we do to thee, that the sea may be calm from upon us? For the sea goes and is··as··a··tempest.

And he said to them, Lift me and throw me into the sea, and the sea shall be calm for you; for I know that for my sake this great tempest is on you.

And the men dug··in with the oars to return it to the dry land, but they were· not ·able, for the sea went against them and was··as··a··tempest.

And they called to Jehovah, and said, We pray Thee, Jehovah, we pray Thee, let us not perish for the soul of this man, and put not upon us innocent blood; for Thou, O Jehovah, hast done as it delighted Thee.

And they lifted· Jonah ·up, and threw him into the sea; and the sea stood still from its perturbation*.

And the men feared Jehovah with great fear, and sacrificed a sacrifice to Jehovah, and vowed vows.

2:1 And Jehovah had provided a great fish* to swallow··up Jonah. And Jonah was in the bowels of the fish three days and three nights.
