1 Vả, Ðức Giê-hô-va có phán cùng Áp-ram rằng: Ngươi hãy ra khỏi quê hương, vòng bà con và nhà cha ngươi, mà đi đến xứ ta sẽ chỉ cho.

2 Ta sẽ làm cho ngươi nên một dân lớn; ta sẽ ban phước cho ngươi, cùng làm nổi danh ngươi, và ngươi sẽ thành một nguồn phước.

3 Ta sẽ ban phước cho người nào chúc phước cho ngươi, rủa sả kẻ nào rủa sả ngươi; và các chi tộc nơi thế gian sẽ nhờ ngươi mà được phước.

4 ồi Áp-ram đi, theo như lời Ðức Giê-hô-va đã phán dạy; Lót đồng đi với người. Khi Áp-ram ra khỏi Cha-ran, tuổi người được bảy mươi lăm.

5 Áp-ram dẫn Sa-rai, vợ mình, Lót, cháu mình, cả gia tài đã thâu góp, và các đầy tớ đã được tại Cha-ran, từ đó ra, để đi đến xứ Ca-na-an; rồi, chúng đều đến xứ Ca-na-an.

6 Áp-ram trải qua xứ nầy, đến cây dẻ bộp của Mô-rê, tại Si-chem. Vả, lúc đó, dân Ca-na-an ở tại xứ.

7 Ðức Giê-hô-va hiện ra cùng Áp-ram mà phán rằng: Ta sẽ ban cho dòng dõi ngươi đất nầy! ồi tại đó Áp-ram lập một bàn thờ cho Ðức Giê-hô-va, là Ðấng đã hiện đến cùng người.

8 Từ đó, người đi qua núi ở về phía đông Bê-tên, rồi đóng trại; phía tây có Bê-tên, phía đông có A-hi. Ðoạn, người lập tại đó một bàn thờ cho Ðức Giê-hô-va và cầu khẩn danh Ngài.

9 Kế sau, Áp-ram vừa đi vừa đóng trại lần lần đến Nam phương.

10 Bấy giờ, trong xứ bị cơn đói kém; sự đói kém ấy lớn, nên Áp-ram xuống xứ Ê-díp-tô mà kiều ngụ.

11 Khi hầu vào đất Ê-díp-tô, Áp-ram bèn nói cùng Sa-rai, vợ mình, rằng: Nầy, ta biết ngươi là một người đờn bà đẹp.

12 Gặp khi nào dân Ê-díp-tô thấy ngươi, họ sẽ nói rằng: Ấy là vợ hắn đó; họ sẽ giết ta, nhưng để cho ngươi sống.

13 Ta xin hãy xưng ngươi là em gái ta, hầu cho sẽ vì ngươi mà ta được trọng đãi và giữ toàn mạng ta.

14 Áp-ram vừa đến xứ Ê-díp-tô, dân Ê-díp-tô nhìn thấy người đờn bà đó đẹp lắm.

15 Các triều thần của Pha-ra-ôn cùng thấy người và trằm-trồ trước mặt vua; đoạn người đờn bà bị dẫn vào cung Pha-ra-ôn.

16 Vì cớ người, nên Pha-ra-ôn hậu đãi Áp-ram, và Áp-ram được nhiều chiên, bò, lừa đực, lừa cái, lạc đà, tôi trai và tớ gái.

17 Song vì Sa-rai, vợ Áp-ram, nên Ðức Giê-hô-va hành phạt Pha-ra-ôn cùng nhà người bị tai họa lớn.

18 Pha-ra-ôn bèn đòi Áp-ram hỏi rằng: Ngươi đã làm chi cho ta vậy? Sao không tâu với ta rằng là vợ ngươi?

19 Sao đã nói rằng: người đó là em gái tôi? nên nỗi ta đã lấy nàng làm vợ. Bây giờ, vợ ngươi đây; hãy nhận lấy và đi đi.

20 Ðoạn, Pha-ra-ôn hạ lịnh cho quan quân đưa vợ chồng Áp-ram cùng hết thảy tài vật của người đi.

2721. Verse 33 And he planted a grove in Beersheba, and there he called on the name of [Jehovah,] the God of Eternity.

'He planted a grove in Beersheba' means doctrine with the cognitions composing it and the nature of it. 'And he called on the name of [Jehovah,] the God of Eternity' means worship from it.

108. Whenever the most ancient people compared man to a garden they would also compare wisdom and everything connected with it to rivers. Yet they did not merely compare but actually called them such since it was characteristic of their speech to do so. At a later time the Prophets in a similar way sometimes compared them, and sometimes actually called them, by these names, as in Isaiah,

Your light will rise in the darkness, and your thick darkness will be as the daylight; and you will be like a watered garden and like a spring of waters whose waters fail not. Isaiah 58:10-11.

This refers to people who receive love and faith. Also,

Like valleys that are planted, like gardens beside a river, like aloes 1 Jehovah has planted, like cedars beside the waters. Numbers 24:6.

This refers to people who are regenerate. In Jeremiah,

Blessed is the man who trusts in Jehovah. He will be like a tree planted beside the waters, which will send out its roots above the stream. Jeremiah 17:7-8.

An instance of regenerate people not being compared to, but actually being called, a garden and a tree beside the rivers occurs in Ezekiel,

The waters caused it to grow, the depth of the waters made it grow tall, the river leading around the place of its planting, and he sent out his lines of water to all the trees of the field. It became beautiful in its greatness, in the length of its branches, for its root was towards many waters. The cedars did not overshadow it in the garden of God, the fir trees were not equal to its branches, and the plane trees were not like its boughs. No tree in the garden of God was equal to it in its beauty. I made it beautiful in the mass of its branches, and all the trees of Eden which are in the garden of God envied it. Ezekiel 31:4, 7-9.

From these quotations it is clear that when the most ancient people likened man, or what is the same, the things that are in man, to a garden, they also added the waters and rivers by which it was watered, and that by 'waters and rivers' they understood the things which would cause growth.
