1 Luego que oyó el hijo de Saúl que Abner había sido muerto en Hebrón, las manos se le descoyuntaron, y fue atemorizado todo Israel.

2 Y tenía el hijo de Saúl dos varones, los cuales eran capitanes de compañía, el nombre de uno era Baana, y el del otro Recab, hijos de Rimón beerotita, de los hijos de Benjamín (porque Beerot era contada con Benjamín;

3 estos beerotitas se habían huido a Gitaim, y habían sido peregrinos allí hasta entonces.)

4 Y Jonatán, hijo de Saúl, tenía un hijo lisiado de los pies de edad de cinco años, que cuando la noticia de la muerte de Saúl y de Jonatán vino de Jezreel, le tomó su ama y huyó; y como iba huyendo de prisa, cayó el niño y quedó cojo. Su nombre era Mefi-boset.

5 Los hijos, pues , de Rimón beerotita, Recab y Baana, fueron y entraron en el mayor calor del día en casa de Is-boset, el cual estaba durmiendo en su cámara la siesta.

6 Entonces entraron ellos en medio de la casa en hábito de mercaderes de grano, y le hirieron en la quinta costilla , y se escaparon Recab y Baana su hermano.

7 Los cuales como entraron en la casa, estando él en su cama en su cámara de dormir, lo hirieron y mataron, y le cortaron la cabeza. Y tomando la cabeza caminaron toda la noche por el camino de la campiña.

8 Y trajeron la cabeza de Is-boset a David en Hebrón, y dijeron al rey: He aquí la cabeza de Is-boset hijo de Saúl tu enemigo, que procuraba matarte; y el SEÑOR ha vengado hoy a mi SEÑOR el rey, de Saúl y de su simiente.

9 Y David respondió a Recab y a su hermano Baana, hijos de Rimón Beerotita, y les dijo: Vive el SEÑOR que ha redimido mi alma de toda angustia,

10 que cuando uno me dio nuevas, diciendo: He aquí Saúl es muerto imaginándose que traía buenas nuevas, yo lo prendí, y le maté en Siclag en pago de la nueva.

11 ¿Cuánto más a los malos hombres que mataron a un hombre justo en su casa, y sobre su cama? Ahora pues, ¿no tengo yo de demandar su sangre de vuestras manos, y quitaros de la tierra?

12 Entonces David mandó a los jóvenes, y ellos los mataron, y les cortaron las manos y los pies, y los colgaron sobre el estanque, en Hebrón. Luego tomaron la cabeza de Is-boset, y la enterraron en el sepulcro de Abner en Hebrón.

6983. 'Neither since yesterday, nor since the day before' means that he has lacked it - the gift of speech - from eternity. This is clear from the meaning of 'since yesterday and since the day before' as from eternity. The reason why 'since yesterday and since the day before' means from eternity is that a period of time is meant by these words, in particular past time; but time spoken of in connection with the Lord or the Divine does not mean a period of time but what is eternal. There are two things proper to the natural order which have no existence in heaven, and even less in the Divine, namely space and time. For their non-existence in heaven and the existence of states instead - states of being instead of 'space', and states of coming-into-being or manifestation instead of 'time' - see 2625, 3938; and for the fact that areas of space and periods of time in heaven are states, 1274, 1382, 2625, 2788, 2837, 3254, 3356, 3387, 3404, 3827, 4321, 4814, 4882, 4901, 4916, 5605, 6110. But within the Divine which is above the heavens the absence of space and time is even more complete; for not even states exist within Him. Instead of space there is what is infinite, and instead of time what is eternal. These two are what periods of time or areas of space in the world correspond to, and are what states of being and of coming-into-being in the heavens correspond to.

[2] The fact that in the Word 'yesterday' and 'the day before' do not mean yesterday and the day before but past time in general is clear from places where those words are used, as in Joshua,

The waters of the Jordan returned to their place, and went as yesterday [and] the day before 1 over all its banks. Joshua 4:18.

In the first Book of Samuel,

It happened, when all who knew Saul from yesterday and the day before 2 saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets . . . 1 Samuel 10:11.

In the second Book of Samuel,

The tribes of Israel said to David, Both yesterday and the day before, 3 when Saul was king over us, you were the one bringing Israel out and back. 2 Samuel 5:1-2.

In these places and elsewhere 'yesterday [and] the day before' stands for previously or past time. Now since 'yesterday and the day before' means time past, and the subject in the highest sense is the Lord, who in respect of the Divine Law or Divine Truth is represented by 'Moses', it is evident that 'since yesterday and since the day before' means from eternity. Eternity, meant by 'yesterday', is described in David as follows,

A thousand years in Your eyes are but as yesterday when it is past. Psalms 90:4.

5415. 'For the famine was in the land of Canaan' means that a desolation existed so far as things of the Church in the natural were concerned. This is clear from the meaning of 'the famine' as an absence of cognitions and consequently as a desolation, dealt with in 3364, 5277, 5279, 5281, 5300, 5349, 5360, 5376; and from the meaning of 'the land of Canaan' as the Church, dealt with in 3686, 3705, 4447. And as the Church is meant, what belongs to the Church is meant also. So it is that 'the famine was in the land of Canaan' means a desolation so far as things of the Church are concerned. The reason the desolation exists in the natural is that the words used here have reference to the sons of Jacob, by whom aspects of the external Church are meant, 5409, and consequently such things as belong to the Church within the natural.
