1 Когда умер Аод, сыны Израилевы стали опять делать злое пред очами Господа.

2 И предал их Господь в руки Иавина, царя Ханаанского, который царствовал в Асоре; военачальником у него был Сисара, который жил в Харошеф-Гоиме.

3 И возопили сыны Израилевы к Господу, ибо у него было девятьсот железных колесниц, и он жестоко угнетал сынов Израилевых двадцать лет.

4 В то время была судьею Израиля Девора пророчица, жена Лапидофова;

5 она жила под Пальмою Девориною, между Рамою и Вефилем, на горе Ефремовой; и приходили к ней сыны Израилевы на суд.

6 Девора послала и призвала Варака, сына Авиноамова, из Кедеса Неффалимова, и сказала ему: повелевает тебе Господь Бог Израилев: пойди, взойди на гору Фавор и возьми с собою десять тысяч человек из сынов Неффалимовых и сынов Завулоновых;

7 а Я приведу к тебе, к потоку Киссону, Сисару, военачальника Иавинова, и колесницы его и многолюдное войско его, и предам его в руки твои.

8 Варак сказал ей: если ты пойдешь со мною, пойду; а если не пойдешь со мною, не пойду.

9 Она сказала ему : пойти пойду с тобою; только не тебе уже будет слава на сем пути, в который ты идешь; но в руки женщины предаст Господь Сисару. И встала Девора и пошла с Вараком в Кедес.

10 Варак созвал Завулонян и Неффалимлян в Кедес, и пошли вслед за ним десять тысяч человек, и Девора пошла с ним.

11 Хевер Кенеянин отделился тогда от Кенеян, сынов Ховава, родственника Моисеева, и раскинул шатер свой у дубравы в Цаанниме близ Кедеса.

12 И донесли Сисаре, что Варак, сын Авиноамов, взошел на гору Фавор.

13 Сисара созвал все колесницы свои, девятьсот железных колесниц,и весь народ, который у него, из Харошеф-Гоима к потоку Киссону.

14 И сказала Девора Вараку: встань, ибо это тот день, в который Господь предаст Сисару в руки твои; Сам Господь пойдет пред тобою. И сошел Варак с горы Фавора, и за ним десять тысяч человек.

15 Тогда Господь привел в замешательство Сисару и все колесницы его и все ополчение его от меча Варакова, и сошел Сисара с колесницы и побежал пеший.

16 Варак преследовал колесницы его и ополчение до Харошеф-Гоима, и пало все ополчение Сисарино от меча, не осталось никого.

17 Сисара же убежал пеший в шатер Иаили, жены Хевера Кенеянина; ибо между Иавином, царем Асорским, и домом Хевера Кенеянина был мир.

18 И вышла Иаиль навстречу Сисаре и сказала ему: зайди, господин мой, зайди ко мне, не бойся. Он зашел к ней в шатер, и онапокрыла его ковром.

19 Сисара сказал ей: дай мне немного воды напиться, я пить хочу. Она развязала мех с молоком, и напоила его и опять покрыла его.

20 Сисара сказал ей: стань у дверей шатра, и если кто придет и спросит у тебя и скажет: „нет ли здесь кого?", ты скажи: „нет".

21 Иаиль, жена Хеверова, взяла кол от шатра, и взяла молот в руку свою, и подошла к нему тихонько, и вонзила кол в високего так, что приколола к земле; а он спал от усталости – и умер.

22 И вот, Варак гонится за Сисарою. Иаиль вышла навстречу ему и сказала ему: войди, я покажу тебе человека, которого ты ищешь. Он вошел к ней, и вот, Сисара лежит мертвый, и кол в виске его.

23 И смирил Бог в тот день Иавина, царя Ханаанского, пред сынами Израилевыми.

24 Рука сынов Израилевых усиливалась более и более над Иавином, царем Ханаанским, доколе не истребили они Иавина, царя Ханаанского.

Exploring the Meaning of Judges 4

Judges 4: Deborah

Yet again, the children of Israel had disobeyed the Lord. At this point in time, they had been under the yoke of Jabin, a Canaanite king, for twenty years. He had nine hundred chariots of iron, and was apparently very powerful.

The Lord raised up Deborah, a prophetess, to free the Israelites from oppression under Jabin. The text says that she would pass judgements for the children of Israel while she sat under the palm tree of Deborah.

Deborah summoned Barak, an army officer, and told him to go with ten thousand men from the tribes of Naphtali and Zebulun to fight King Jabin’s armies. Barak said he would only go if Deborah went as well, so she agreed to join him. Deborah then prophesied that Sisera, the enemy commander, would be defeated by a woman.

The two armies clashed at by the River Kishon, and all of Sisera’s men were killed. Sisera then fled to the tent of Heber, an Israelite who was on peaceful terms with King Jabin. Jael, Heber’s wife, invited Sisera to come in with the comforting words, “fear not”. She covered him with a blanket, gave him milk to drink, and let him sleep there.

Then Jael quietly took a tent peg and drove it into Sisera’s temple using a hammer, so that the peg stuck in the earth. When Barak came to the tent, pursuing Sisera, Jael went out to tell him, “come, and I will show you the man you seek.” And she showed him Sisera, dead, with a peg through his temple.

So Jabin’s army was defeated that day, and Israel grew stronger until their oppression under Jabin came to an end.

Deborah is an especially significant character in the Bible, because she was the only female judge of Israel. It was very unusual for a woman in those times to rise to power, yet she truly earned the respect of her people. Deborah, as a woman, stands for the nurturing power of the Word to strengthen us during regeneration. Her name means ‘a bee’, but this comes from a word meaning ‘to speak’ – here, to speak the Word. Bees make honey; honey is nutritious; God’s word is our nourishment (see Swedenborg’s work, Arcana Caelestia 3424[2]).

The fact that Deborah judged from under a palm tree may seem like a passing detail, but even this contributes to the spiritual meaning of the story. Palm trees stand for the divine truths of the Word, which means that Deborah was judging the people from her understanding of the Lord’s truths.

King Jabin’s nine hundred iron chariots represent the apparent power of false beliefs, thoughts and persuasions over us. The number ‘nine’ stands for something which is complete, and ‘iron’ here stands for either natural truths or falsities. A ‘chariot’, being pulled by a horse, always stands for a set of teachings or doctrine. These three symbols add to the picture of a very powerful enemy: false ideas and views that can weaken and overwhelm us (Arcana Caelestia 4720[2]).

The spiritual meaning of the complex arrangement between Barak and Deborah is that we can only deal with our spiritual conflicts if we take the Word’s power (Deborah) with us. Barak, a man, represents the power of truth, but Deborah says a woman will gain victory over Sisera. The feminine stands for the power of love: our charity, our affection for good, and our wish to be useful. These qualities are always essential in our spiritual life (see Swedenborg’s work, Apocalypse Explained 1120[2]).

The story about Jael and Sisera is really about actively resisting the temptations of evil in our lives. Jael, a woman, stands for the power of good to overcome what is false in our mind. Driving the tent peg through Sisera’s head stands for the complete destruction of what is false. Driving it right through and into the ground stands for the power of good in our life and in our regeneration, because the ground represents our actions (Arcana Caelestia 268).

When Barak and Jael meet, it stands for the unity between good (Jael, a woman) and truth (Barak, a man). This unity of good and truth appears again at the start of the next chapter, in which Deborah and Barak sing of Israel’s victory.

17. All my experience in heaven bears witness to the fact that the divine nature that comes from the Lord, affects angels, and constitutes heaven, is love. In fact, all the people there are forms of love and thoughtfulness. They look indescribably beautiful. Love radiates from their faces, from their speech, from every detail of their behavior. 1

Further, there are surrounding auras of spiritual life that emanate from every angel and from every spirit and envelop them. By means of these auras one can recognize even from a distance the quality of the affections of their loves, since these auras flow out from the life of their affection and consequent thought - that is, from the life of their love and consequent faith. The auras that emanate from angels are so full of love that they touch the deepest reaches of life of the people they meet. I have been aware of them a number of times, and they have moved me deeply. 2

I have been able to see that love was the source of angels' life because all the people in the other life turn in a direction determined by their own love. People engaged in a love for the Lord and a love for their neighbor are constantly turning toward the Lord, while people who are engaged in self-love are constantly turning their backs to the Lord. This holds true no matter which way they turn, since in the other life spatial relationships are determined by people's inner natures. These also determine geographical regions, whose boundaries are not drawn the way they are in the physical world but depend on which way people are facing. Actually, it is not angels who turn to the Lord but the Lord who turns toward himself the people who love to do whatever has its source in him. 3 , But there will be more on this subject below, when we discuss geographical regions in the other life.
