¹ യാക്കോബ് തന്റെ പിതാവു പരദേശിയായി പാര്‍ത്ത ദേശമായ കനാന്‍ ദേശത്തു വസിച്ചു.

² യാക്കോബിന്റെ വംശപാരമ്പര്യം എന്തെന്നാല്‍യോസേഫിന്നു പതിനേഴുവയസ്സായപ്പോള്‍ അവന്‍ തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരോടുകൂടെ ആടുകളെ മേയിച്ചുകൊണ്ടു ഒരു ബാലനായി തന്റെ അപ്പന്റെ ഭാര്യമാരായ ബില്‍ഹയുടെയും സില്പയുടെയും പുത്രന്മാരോടുകൂടെ ഇരുന്നു അവരെക്കുറിച്ചുള്ള ദുഃശ്രുതി യോസേഫ് അപ്പനോടു വന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

³ യോസേഫ് വാര്‍ദ്ധക്യത്തിലെ മകനാകകൊണ്ടു യിസ്രായേല്‍ എല്ലാമക്കളിലുംവെച്ചു അവനെ അധികം സ്നേഹിച്ചു ഒരു നിലയങ്കി അവന്നു ഉണ്ടാക്കിച്ചുകൊടുത്തു.

⁴ അപ്പന്‍ തങ്ങളെ എല്ലാവരെക്കാളും അവനെ അധികം സ്നേഹിക്കുന്നു എന്നു അവന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാര്‍ കണ്ടിട്ടു അവനെ പകെച്ചു; അവനോടു സമാധാനമായി സംസാരിപ്പാന്‍ അവര്‍ക്കും കഴിഞ്ഞില്ല.

⁵ യോസേഫ് ഒരു സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടു; അതു തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരോടു അറിയിച്ചതുകൊണ്ടു അവര്‍ അവനെ പിന്നെയും അധികം പകെച്ചു.

⁶ അവന്‍ അവരോടു പറഞ്ഞതുഞാന്‍ കണ്ട സ്വപ്നം കേട്ടുകൊള്‍വിന്‍ .

⁷ നാം വയലില്‍ കറ്റകെട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു; അപ്പോള്‍ എന്റെ കറ്റ എഴുന്നേറ്റു നിവിര്‍ന്നുനിന്നു; നിങ്ങളുടെ കറ്റകള്‍ ചുറ്റും നിന്നു എന്റെ കറ്റയെ നമസ്കരിച്ചു.

⁸ അവന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാര്‍ അവനോടുനീ ഞങ്ങളുടെ രാജാവാകുമോ? നീ ഞങ്ങളെ വാഴുമോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു, അവന്റെ സ്വപ്നങ്ങള്‍ നിമത്തവും അവന്റെ വാക്കുനിമിത്തവും അവനെ പിന്നെയും അധികം ദ്വേഷിച്ചു.

⁹ അവന്‍ മറ്റൊരു സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടു തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരോടു അറിയിച്ചുഞാന്‍ പിന്നെയും ഒരു സ്വപ്നം കണ്ടു; സൂര്യനും ചന്ദ്രനും പതിനൊന്നു നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളും എന്നെ നമസ്കരിച്ചു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

¹⁰ അവന്‍ അതു അപ്പനോടും സഹോദരന്മാരോടും അറിയിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ അപ്പന്‍ അവനെ ശാസിച്ചു അവനോടുനീ ഈ കണ്ട സ്വപ്നം എന്തു? ഞാനും നിന്റെ അമ്മയും നിന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരും സാഷ്ടാംഗം വീണു നിന്നെ നമസ്കരിപ്പാന്‍ വരുമോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

¹¹ അവന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാര്‍ക്കും അവനോടു അസൂയ തോന്നി; അപ്പനോ ഈ വാക്കു മനസ്സില്‍ സംഗ്രഹിച്ചു.

¹² അവന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാര്‍ അപ്പന്റെ ആടുകളെ മേയ്പാന്‍ ശെഖേമില്‍ പോയിരുന്നു.

¹³ യിസ്രായേല്‍ യോസേഫിനോടുനിന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാര്‍ ശെഖേമില്‍ ആടുമേയിക്കുന്നുണ്ടല്ലോ; വരിക, ഞാന്‍ നിന്നെ അവരുടെ അടുക്കല്‍ അയക്കും എന്നു പറഞ്ഞതിന്നു അവന്‍ അവനോടുഞാന്‍ പോകാം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

¹⁴ അവന്‍ അവനോടുനീ ചെന്നു നിന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാര്‍ക്കും സുഖം തന്നേയോ? ആടുകള്‍ നന്നായിരിക്കുന്നുവോ എന്നു നോക്കി, വന്നു വസ്തുത അറിയിക്കേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു ഹെബ്രോന്‍ താഴ്വരയില്‍ നിന്നു അവനെ അയച്ചു; അവന്‍ ശെഖേമില്‍ എത്തി.

¹⁵ അവന്‍ വെളിന്‍ പ്രദേശത്തു ചുറ്റിനടക്കുന്നതു ഒരുത്തന്‍ കണ്ടുനീ എന്തു അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നു എന്നു അവനോടു ചോദിച്ചു.

¹⁶ അതിന്നു അവന്‍ ഞാന്‍ എന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരെ അന്വേഷിക്കുന്നു; അവര്‍ എവിടെ ആടു മേയിക്കുന്നു എന്നു എന്നോടു അറിയിക്കേണമേ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

¹⁷ അവര്‍ ഇവിടെ നിന്നു പോയി; നാം ദോഥാനിലേക്കു പോക എന്നു അവര്‍ പറയുന്നതു ഞാന്‍ കേട്ടു എന്നു അവന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. അങ്ങനെ യോസേഫ് തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരെ അന്വേഷിച്ചു ചെന്നു ദോഥാനില്‍വെച്ചു കണ്ടു.

¹⁸ അവര്‍ അവനെ ദൂരത്തു നിന്നു കണ്ടിട്ടു അവനെ കൊല്ലേണ്ടതിന്നു അവന്‍ അടുത്തുവരുംമുമ്പെ അവന്നു വിരോധമായി ദുരാലോചന ചെയ്തു

¹⁹ അതാ, സ്വപ്നക്കാരന്‍ വരുന്നു; വരുവിന്‍ , നാം അവനെ കൊന്നു ഒരു കുഴിയില്‍ ഇട്ടുകളക;

²⁰ ഒരു ദുഷ്ടമൃഗം അവനെ തിന്നുകളഞ്ഞു എന്നു പറയാം; അവന്റെ സ്വപ്നങ്ങള്‍ എന്താകുമെന്നു നമുക്കു കാണാമല്ലോ എന്നു തമ്മില്‍ തമ്മില്‍ പറഞ്ഞു.

²¹ രൂബേന്‍ അതു കേട്ടിട്ടുനാം അവന്നു ജീവഹാനി വരുത്തരുതു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു അവനെ അവരുടെ കയ്യില്‍ നിന്നു വിടുവിച്ചു.

²² അവരുടെ കയ്യില്‍ നിന്നു അവനെ വിടുവിച്ചു അപ്പന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ കൊണ്ടു പോകേണമെന്നു കരുതിക്കൊണ്ടു രൂബേന്‍ അവരോടുരക്തം ചൊരിയിക്കരുതു; നിങ്ങള്‍ അവന്റെമേല്‍ കൈ വെക്കാതെ മരുഭൂമിയിലുള്ള ആ കുഴിയില്‍ അവനെ ഇടുവിന്‍ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

²³ യേസേഫ് തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരുടെ അടുക്കല്‍ വന്നപ്പോള്‍ അവന്‍ ഉടുത്തിരുന്ന നിലയങ്കി അവര്‍ ഊരി, അവനെ എടുത്തു ഒരു കുഴിയില്‍ ഇട്ടു.

²⁴ അതു വെള്ളമില്ലാത്ത പൊട്ടകൂഴി ആയിരുന്നു.

²⁵ അവര്‍ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിപ്പാന്‍ ഇരുന്നപ്പോള്‍ തലപൊക്കി നോക്കി, ഗിലെയാദില്‍നിന്നു സാംപ്രാണിയും സുഗന്ധപ്പശയും സന്നിനായകവും ഒട്ടകപ്പുറത്തു കയറ്റി മിസ്രയീമിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടുപോകുന്ന യിശ്മായേല്യരുടെ ഒരു യാത്രക്കൂട്ടം വരുന്നതു കണ്ടു.

²⁶ അപ്പോള്‍ യെഹൂദാ തന്റെ സഹോദരന്മാരോടുനാം നമ്മുടെ സഹോദരനെ കൊന്നു അവന്റെ രക്തം മറെച്ചിട്ടു എന്തു ഉപകാരം?

²⁷ വരുവിന്‍ , നാം അവനെ യിശ്മായേല്യര്‍ക്കും വിലക്കുക; നാം അവന്റെ മേല്‍ കൈ വെക്കരുതു; അവന്‍ നമ്മുടെ സഹോദരനും നമ്മുടെ മാംസവുമല്ലോ എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു; അവന്റെ സാഹോദരന്മാര്‍ അതിന്നു സമ്മതിച്ചു.

²⁸ മിദ്യാന്യകച്ചവടക്കാര്‍ കടന്നുപോകുമ്പോള്‍ അവര്‍ യോസേഫിനെ കുഴിയില്‍നിന്നു വലിച്ചു കയറ്റി, യിശ്മായേല്യര്‍ക്കും ഇരുപതു വെള്ളിക്കാശിന്നു വിറ്റു. അവര്‍ യോസേഫിനെ മിസ്രയീമിലേക്കു കൊണ്ടുപോയി.

²⁹ രൂബേന്‍ തിരികെ കുഴിയുടെ അടുക്കല്‍ ചെന്നപ്പോള്‍ യോസേഫ് കുഴിയില്‍ ഇല്ല എന്നു കണ്ടു തന്റെ വസ്ത്രം കീറി,

³⁰ സഹോദരന്മാരുടെ അടുക്കല്‍ വന്നുബാലനെ കാണുന്നില്ലല്ലോ; ഞാന്‍ ഇനി എവിടെ പോകേണ്ടു എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

³¹ പിന്നെ അവര്‍ ഒരു കോലാട്ടുകൊറ്റനെ കൊന്നു, യോസേഫിന്റെ അങ്കി എടുത്തു രക്തത്തില്‍ മുക്കി.

³² അവര്‍ നിലയങ്കി തങ്ങളുടെ അപ്പന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ കൊടുത്തയച്ചുഇതു ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്കു കണ്ടുകിട്ടി; ഇതു നിന്റെ മകന്റെ അങ്കിയോ അല്ലയോ എന്നു നോക്കേണം എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

³³ അവന്‍ അതു തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞുഇതു എന്റെ മകന്റെ അങ്കി തന്നേ; ഒരു ദുഷ്ടമൃഗം അവനെ തിന്നുകളഞ്ഞുയോസേഫിനെ പറിച്ചുകീറിപ്പോയി എന്നു പറഞ്ഞു.

³⁴ യാക്കോബ് വസ്ത്രം കീറി, അരയില്‍ രട്ടുശീല ചുറ്റി ഏറിയനാള്‍ തന്റെ മകനെച്ചൊല്ലി ദുഃഖിച്ചുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു

³⁵ അവന്റെ പുത്രന്മാരും പുത്രിമാരും എല്ലാം അവനെ ആശ്വസിപ്പിപ്പാന്‍ വന്നു; അവനോ ആശ്വാസം കൈക്കൊള്‍വാന്‍ മനസ്സില്ലാതെഞാന്‍ ദുഃഖത്തോടെ എന്റെ മകന്റെ അടുക്കല്‍ പാതാളത്തില്‍ ഇറങ്ങുമെന്നു പറഞ്ഞു. ഇങ്ങനെ അവന്റെ അപ്പന്‍ അവനെക്കുറിച്ചു കരഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു.

³⁶ എന്നാല്‍ മിദ്യാന്യര്‍ അവനെ മിസ്രയീമില്‍ ഫറവോന്റെ ഒരു ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനായി അകമ്പടി നായകനായ പോത്തീഫറിന്നു വിറ്റു.

¹ Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took [men]:

² and they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown;

³ and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them, "You take too much on yourself, since all the congregation are holy, everyone of them, and Yahweh is among them: why then lift yourselves up above the assembly of Yahweh?"

⁴ When Moses heard it, he fell on his face:

⁵ and he spoke to Korah and to all his company, saying, "In the morning Yahweh will show who are his, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near to him: even him whom he shall choose he will cause to come near to him.

⁶ Do this: take censers, Korah, and all his company;

⁷ and put fire in them, and put incense on them before Yahweh tomorrow: and it shall be that the man whom Yahweh chooses, he shall be holy. You have gone too far, you sons of Levi!"

⁸ Moses said to Korah, "Hear now, you sons of Levi!

⁹ Is it a small thing to you, that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of Yahweh, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them;

¹⁰ and that he has brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you? and do you seek the priesthood also?

¹¹ Therefore you and all your company are gathered together against Yahweh: and Aaron, what is he that you murmur against him?"

¹² Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said, "We won't come up:

¹³ is it a small thing that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but you must also make yourself a prince over us?

¹⁴ Moreover you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards: will you put out the eyes of these men? We won't come up."

¹⁵ Moses was very angry, and said to Yahweh, "Don't respect their offering: I have not taken one donkey from them, neither have I hurt one of them."

¹⁶ Moses said to Korah, "You and all your company go before Yahweh, you, and they, and Aaron, tomorrow:

¹⁷ and each man take his censer, and put incense on them, and each man bring before Yahweh his censer, two hundred fifty censers; you also, and Aaron, each his censer."

¹⁸ They each took his censer, and put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the Tent of Meeting with Moses and Aaron.

¹⁹ Korah assembled all the congregation against them to the door of the Tent of Meeting: and the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the congregation.

²⁰ Yahweh spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

²¹ "Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!"

²² They fell on their faces, and said, "God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you be angry with all the congregation?"

²³ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

²⁴ "Speak to the congregation, saying, 'Get away from around the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram!'"

²⁵ Moses rose up and went to Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him.

²⁶ He spoke to the congregation, saying, "Depart, please, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest you be consumed in all their sins!"

²⁷ So they went away from the tent of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side: and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, and their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.

²⁸ Moses said, "Hereby you shall know that Yahweh has sent me to do all these works; for [I have] not [done them] of my own mind.

²⁹ If these men die the common death of all men, or if they be visited after the visitation of all men; then Yahweh hasn't sent me.

³⁰ But if Yahweh make a new thing, and the ground open its mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain to them, and they go down alive into Sheol; then you shall understand that these men have despised Yahweh."

³¹ It happened, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground split apart that was under them;

³² and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men who appertained to Korah, and all their goods.

³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into Sheol: and the earth closed on them, and they perished from among the assembly.

³⁴ All Israel that were around them fled at the cry of them; for they said, "Lest the earth swallow us up!"

³⁵ Fire came forth from Yahweh, and devoured the two hundred fifty men who offered the incense.

³⁶ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

³⁷ "Speak to Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the censers out of the burning, and scatter the fire yonder; for they are holy,

³⁸ even the censers of these sinners against their own lives; and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar: for they offered them before Yahweh; therefore they are holy; and they shall be a sign to the children of Israel."

³⁹ Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers, which those who were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,

⁴⁰ to be a memorial to the children of Israel, to the end that no stranger, who isn't of the seed of Aaron, comes near to burn incense before Yahweh; that he not be as Korah, and as his company: as Yahweh spoke to him by Moses.

⁴¹ But on the next day all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying, "You have killed Yahweh's people!"

⁴² It happened, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the Tent of Meeting: and behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of Yahweh appeared.

⁴³ Moses and Aaron came to the front of the Tent of Meeting.

⁴⁴ Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

⁴⁵ "Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!" They fell on their faces.

⁴⁶ Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer, and put fire from off the altar in it, and lay incense on it, and carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from Yahweh! The plague has begun."

⁴⁷ Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and behold, the plague has begun among the people: and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.

⁴⁸ He stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.

⁴⁹ Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides those who died about the matter of Korah.

⁵⁰ Aaron returned to Moses to the door of the Tent of Meeting: and the plague was stayed.
