1 Po šių įvykių Viešpats prabilo į Abromą regėjime: “Nebijok, Abromai! Aš esu tavo skydas ir labai didelis atlygis!”

2 Abromas tarė: “Viešpatie Dieve! Ką Tu man duosi? Aš neturiu vaikų, mano namų paveldėtojas bus damaskietis Eliezeras.

3 Man nedavei vaikų, ir štai tarnas, gimęs mano namuose, yra mano įpėdinis”.

4 Viešpats atsakė jam: “Ne šitas bus tavo paveldėtojas, bet tas, kuris gims iš tavęs”.

5 Ir, išvedęs jį laukan, tarė: “Pažvelk į dangų ir, jei gali, suskaičiuok žvaigždes! Tiek bus tavo palikuonių!”

6 Abromas patikėjo Dievu, ir tai jam buvo įskaityta teisumu.

7 Dievas kalbėjo: “Aš esu Viešpats, kuris tave išvedžiau iš Chaldėjos miesto Ūro, kad tu paveldėtum šitą šalį”.

8 Abromas tarė: “Viešpatie Dieve! Iš kur galiu žinoti, kad ją paveldėsiu?”

9 Tada Jis tarė jam: “Atvesk man trejų metų karvę, trejų metų ožką, trejų metų aviną, balandį ir jauną karvelį”.

10 Abromas, atvedęs visus gyvulius, padalino pusiau ir padėjo kiekvieną gabalą vienas prieš kitą, tačiau paukščių nedalino.

11 Plėšrieji paukščiai atskrido prie mėsos, bet Abromas juos nubaidė.

12 Saulei leidžiantis, gilus miegas apėmė Abromą, siaubas ir didelė tamsa jį apėmė.

13 Tada Viešpats tarė Abromui: “Žinok, kad tavo palikuonys bus ateiviai svetimame krašte, jie vergaus ir bus spaudžiami keturis šimtus metų.

14 Tautą, kuriai jie vergaus, Aš teisiu, ir tada jie iš ten išeis su dideliu turtu.

15 O tu ramybėje nueisi pas savo tėvus ir būsi palaidotas, sulaukęs žilos senatvės.

16 Ketvirtoji karta sugrįš čia, nes amoritų nusikaltimų saikas dar nėra pilnas”.

17 Nusileidus saulei ir sutemus, štai pasirodė rūkstanti krosnis ir liepsnojantis deglas ir praėjo tarp tų mėsos gabalų.

18 dieną Viešpats padarė su Abromu sandorą, sakydamas: “Tavo palikuonims atidaviau visą žemę nuo Egipto upės iki didžiosios Eufrato upės:

19 kenitus, kenazus, kadmonitus,

20 hetitus, perizus, refajus,

21 amoritus, kanaaniečius, girgašus ir jebusiečius”.

1812. 'He believed in Jehovah' means the Lord's faith at that time. This is clear from the words themselves, and also from the train of thought in the internal sense, the train of thought being that while He lived in the world the Lord was engaged repeatedly in conflicts brought about by temptations, and was repeatedly victorious. And what is meant here by 'believing in Jehovah' is the truth that the Lord was filled repeatedly with an inmost confidence and faith that, because it was pure love out of which He was fighting for the salvation of the whole human race, He could not but be victorious. From the love out of which anyone fights it is known what his faith is. A person who fights out of any other love than love towards the neighbour and love towards the Lord's kingdom is not fighting out of faith, that is, he does not believe in Jehovah but in that which he loves; for the love itself for which he fights constitutes his faith. Take, for example, one who fights out of the love of becoming the greatest in heaven. He does not believe in Jehovah, but rather in himself, for wishing to become the greatest is wishing to have control over others. Thus he fights for control. It is the same with every other example that may be taken. From the love itself therefore out of which a person fights one may know what his faith is.

[2] The Lord however, in all His conflicts brought about by temptations, never fought out of self-love, that is, for Himself, but for all throughout the universe. He did not fight therefore to become the greatest in heaven, for that is contrary to Divine love. He scarcely did so to become the least. He fought solely so that all others might become something and be saved, as He Himself also declares in Mark,

The two sons of Zebedee said, Grant us to sit in Your glory, one on Your right hand and the other on Your left. Jesus said, Whoever would be great among you must be your minister, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of Man also came not to be ministered to but to minister, and to give His life 1 as the price of redemption for many. Mark 10:37, 43-45.

This is the love, that is, the faith, out of which the Lord fought, and which is meant by 'believing in Jehovah'.

2786. 'And went to the place of which God had told him' means the state at that time according to perception. This is clear from the meaning of 'place' as state, dealt with in 1273-1277, 1376-1381, 2625, and from the meaning of 'God's telling him' as perceiving from the Divine, dealt with in 2769, 2778. As regards the state itself, this is described in the present verse - the state which the Lord assumed when undergoing temptations, here that state when He underwent the severest and inmost temptations. The preliminary preparation for that state consisted in His entering a state of peace and innocence, and also in the preparation by Him of His natural man, and of His rational man too, so that these might serve the Divine Rational, to which He joined the merit of righteousness, and by doing these things raising Himself up.

[2] These matters cannot possibly be explained intelligibly or presented to the thought of anyone who does not know that many states exist together simultaneously, yet distinct and separate from one another, and who also does not know what a state of peace and innocence is, what the natural man is, and what the rational man is, as well as what the merit of righteousness is. He must first have a distinct idea of all of these, and must also know that from the Divine the Lord was able to bring Himself into whatever states He pleased, and that He prepared Himself to enter temptation by bringing about many states. Although these matters are with man enveloped in obscurity like that of night, they are bathed in light like that of day with the angels; for the angels, dwelling in the light of heaven flowing from the Lord, see countless things - each distinctly - within those matters and others like them, and from the affection flowing in at the same time experience indescribable joy. From this it may become clear how far removed man's ability to understand and perceive is from angels' ability to do so.
