1 Quibus transgressis, dixit Dominus ad Josue :

2 Elige duodecim viros singulos per singulas tribus :

3 et præcipe eis ut tollant de medio Jordanis alveo, ubi steterunt pedes sacerdotum, duodecim durissimos lapides, quos ponetis in loco castrorum, ubi fixeritis hac nocte tentoria.

4 Vocavitque Josue duodecim viros, quos elegerat de filiis Israël, singulos de singulis tribubus,

5 et ait ad eos : Ite ante arcam Domini Dei vestri ad Jordanis medium, et portate inde singuli singulos lapides in humeris vestris, juxta numerum filiorum Israël,

6 ut sit signum inter vos : et quando interrogaverint vos filii vestri cras, dicentes : Quid sibi volunt isti lapides ?

7 respondebitis eis : Defecerunt aquæ Jordanis ante arcam fœderis Domini, cum transiret eum : idcirco positi sunt lapides isti in monimentum filiorum Israël usque in æternum.

8 Fecerunt ergo filii Israël sicut præcepit eis Josue, portantes de medio Jordanis alveo duodecim lapides, ut Dominus ei imperarat, juxta numerum filiorum Israël, usque ad locum in quo castrametati sunt, ibique posuerunt eos.

9 Alios quoque duodecim lapides posuit Josue in medio Jordanis alveo, ubi steterunt sacerdotes, qui portabant arcam fœderis : et sunt ibi usque in præsentem diem.

10 Sacerdotes autem qui portabant arcam, stabant in Jordanis medio, donec omnia complerentur, quæ Josue, ut loqueretur ad populum, præceperat Dominus, et dixerat ei Moyses. Festinavitque populus, et transiit.

11 Cumque transissent omnes, transivit et arca Domini, sacerdotesque pergebant ante populum.

12 Filii quoque Ruben, et Gad, et dimidia tribus Manasse, armati præcedebant filios Israël, sicut eis præceperat Moyses :

13 et quadraginta pugnatorum millia per turmas, et cuneos, incedebant per plana atque campestria urbis Jericho.

14 In die illo magnificavit Dominus Josue coram omni Israël, ut timerent eum, sicut timuerant Moysen, dum adviveret.

15 Dixitque ad eum :

16 Præcipe sacerdotibus, qui portant arcam fœderis, ut ascendant de Jordane.

17 Qui præcepit eis, dicens : Ascendite de Jordane.

18 Cumque ascendissent portantes arcam fœderis Domini, et siccam humum calcare cœpissent, reversæ sunt aquæ in alveum suum, et fluebant sicut ante consueverant.

19 Populus autem ascendit de Jordane decimo die mensis primi, et castrametati sunt in Galgalis contra orientalem plagam urbis Jericho.

20 Duodecim quoque lapides, quos de Jordanis alveo sumpserant, posuit Josue in Galgalis,

21 et dixit ad filios Israël : Quando interrogaverint filii vestri cras patres suos, et dixerint eis : Quid sibi volunt lapides isti ?

22 docebitis eos, atque dicetis : Per arentem alveum transivit Israël Jordanem istum,

23 siccante Domino Deo vestro aquas ejus in conspectu vestro, donec transiretis :

24 sicut fecerat prius in mari Rubro, quod siccavit donec transiremus :

25 ut discant omnes terrarum populi fortissimam Domini manum, ut et vos timeatis Dominum Deum vestrum omni tempore.

Exploring the Meaning of Joshua 4

Joshua 4: Twelve stones are taken from the river Jordan

In this chapter we pick up on the command to take twelve men, one from each tribe, which was mentioned in chapter 3. The task is for each man to pick up a large stone from where the priests’ feet stand, and take it across, and put it in the lodging place. These stones will be as memorial stones so that later generations who ask what these stones mean will be told about the miracle of the Lord in the crossing of the river Jordan.

Later, the Israelites camped at Gilgal and Joshua set the twelve stones up as a permanent memorial.

A ‘stone’ is a piece of hard rock. It corresponds to a truth; for us it stands for a truth which we have made ours and which guides us in our life (Apocalypse Revealed 231). It might be the truth that the Lord’s providence is involved in everything that happens. It could be the great truth that we will live for ever, or that God came on earth as a human being and overcame the power of hell. These and other truths are rock hard truths or stones.

But here, it is a stone which has been washed and worked on by the waters of the river Jordan, and over much time has become fashioned and rounded by erosion. So, it could be a life-truth, for example that we are to show respect to other people. That’s a great truth, but now it is connected with our understanding of the Lord. So we are to show respect to other people because each and every person has been created by God for a unique purpose. And we can also add that we know how it feels when other people respect us.

So we assemble our twelve memorial stones. These are to be recalled, remembered, revisited by us again and again as time passes. “Yes, God brought me here from where I was before.” (Arcana Caelestia 1988). This meaning of the stones helps us with the apparent contradiction in the chapter between Joshua 4:9 where “the stones are set up in the Jordan and are there to this day” and verse Joshua 4:20 where “Joshua sets up the twelves stones from out of the Jordan, in Gilgal.” Stones can’t be in two places at once, but yes, spiritually they can and need to be.

We need to always remember and be mindful of how the Lord works with us in giving us truths for our life. Everything is the Lord! These are stones in the Jordan. Yet we need to always remember that we are to live, act, and turn away from any evil as if it is only us making that decision and doing it. These are the stones set up at Gilgal (Apocalypse Explained 700[14]). Both of them are involved in our regeneration and spiritual life.

Then we are told that the men of the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh went across the Jordan armed and went before all the other tribes. This links with several other mentions of these tribes who had chosen to live back over the Jordan and not in the land of Canaan. They stand for our outward life and our life in the world which, while it is not directly spiritual, must have qualities that come from God’s truths. Here, those qualities come from being willing to go in and fight to help take the land (Arcana Caelestia 2184).

Verse 13 says that about 40,000 prepared for war and crossed the river Jordan before the Lord for battle. Here is a number. Numbers in the Word are helpful clues to the inner meaning. The number 40 always stands for some kind of temptation or crisis in the Word – for example, Jesus was in the wilderness 40 days and 40 nights, tempted. Here, 40 has grown to become 40,000 but it has the same meaning of temptation (Arcana Caelestia 2273). Our spiritual life and regeneration will certainly take us into various temptations (‘battles’) and the Lord allows them so that we grow stronger through them. The whole conquest of Canaan is nothing else!

ŽE byly opravdu nade vše svaté, lze spatřit i z toho, že sám Hospodin, tedy Pán, sestoupil v ohni a s anděly na horu Sínaj a že je odtud zvučným hlasem vyhlásil; že se lidé po tři dny připravovali, aby vše viděli a slyšeli; že hora byla ohraničena, aby nikdo nepřistoupil blíž a nezemřel; že ani kněží, ani starší se nesměli přiblížit, ale jen samotný Mojžíš; že tyto zákony byly napsány Božím prstem na dvě kamenné desky; že Mojžíšovi zářil obličej, když je podruhé snášel z hory; že desky byly uloženy do schrány a tam do nejvnitřnějšího svatostánku, na schránu byl umístěn příkrov a na něj cherubové ze zlata; že tato velesvatyně, jak ji nazvali, byla tím nejposvátnějším v jejich církvi; že venku před oponou, kterou byla zastřena, byly umístěny předměty představující svaté věci nebe a církve, tedy zlatý svícen se sedmi lampami, zlatý oltář s kaditelnicí a stůl obložený zlatem, na kterém ležely předkladné chleby, a kolem visely opony z purpurově fialové, nachové a karmínové látky. Svatost tomuto svatostánku propůjčoval pouze Zákon ve schráně.

Pro tuto svatost ze Zákona ve schráně se celý izraelský lid na příkaz utábořil kolem svatostánku v pořadí podle svých kmenů a takto seřazen za ním pochodoval; v noci nad ním stál oblak a ve dne oheň. Pro svatost tohoto Zákona a pro Svou přítomnost v něm Pán mluvil s Mojžíšem nad příkrovem mezi cheruby. Schrána byla pojmenována Hospodin tam; a Áronovi bylo dovoleno vejít za oponu pouze s oběťmi a se zápalem.

Protože tento Zákon byl svátostí církve, David přinesl schránu na horu Sion, a potom ji uložil uprostřed chrámu v Jeruzalémě, kde tvořila jeho svatyni. Pro Pánovu přítomnost v Zákoně a kolem něj se skrze schránu děly zázraky - rozdělily se například vody Jordánu a zatímco schrána spočívala uprostřed řeky, lid přecházel suchou nohou. Jejím přenášením padly zdi Jericha, skácel se před ní Dágon, bůh Pelištejců, a pak s uraženou hlavou zůstal ležet na prahu chrámu; bylo skrze ni pobito mnoho tisíc mužů z Bét-šemeše, kromě mnoha dalšího. To vše se stalo pouze skrze Pánovu přítomnost v Jeho deseti slovech, jež tvoří předpisy desatera.
