Numbers 36

Studie

1 And the heads of the fathers of the families of the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came··near and spoke before Moses, and before the chiefs, the heads of the fathers of the sons of Israel;

2 and they said, Jehovah commanded my lord to give the land for an inheritance by lot to the sons of Israel; and my lord was commanded by Jehovah to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.

3 And if they be for wives to one of the sons of the other tribes of the sons of Israel, then shall their inheritance be diminished from the inheritance of our fathers, and shall be added over the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall be; and it shall be diminished from the lot of our inheritance.

4 And if the jubilee of the sons of Israel shall be, then shall their inheritance be added over the inheritance of the tribe to which they shall be; and their inheritance shall diminish from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.

5 And Moses commanded the sons of Israel by the mouth of Jehovah, saying, The tribe of the sons of Joseph has spoken rightly.

6 This is the word which Jehovah commands for the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, Let them be for wives to whomever is good in their eyes; but surely to the family of the tribe of their father shall they be for wives.

7 And the inheritance of the sons of Israel shall not turn··around from tribe to tribe; for each··man of the sons of Israel shall stick to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.

8 And every daughter who possesses an inheritance from the tribes of the sons of Israel shall be for a wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, so··that the sons of Israel may possess every man the inheritance of his fathers.

9 And the inheritance shall not turn··around from one tribe to another tribe; for each··man of the tribes of the sons of Israel shall stick to his own inheritance.

10 As Jehovah commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelophehad;

11 and Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad, were wives to the sons of their uncles.

12 they would be for wives of the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance was in the tribe of the family of their father.

13 These are the commandments and the judgments, which Jehovah commanded by the hand of Moses to the sons of Israel in the deserts of Moab by Jordan near Jericho.

Command

Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze

To command is to give an order that something must be done, and is directed to an individual, or a group. It is an imperative, not a suggestion. Commanding can be done in two ways, or from two differing motives. It often comes in an organization, where it is used to impose an order that is necessary to do the organization's work, such as a business, or government or an army, and can be legitimate, or is used in a family by parents to maintain an orderly home. But it can also be used by a person who loves power and having gotten it in some way, loves to impose his or her will on others for selfish gratification. So one motive is love of a use, or of good, and the other is for the love of self, or possessions. The Lord, from His infinite love, has given mankind commandments because He is order itself, and knows that our happiness to eternity depends on our acceptance of His order of creation, which ultimately is the only order that exists.
