Nahum 1

Studie

1 The burden of Nineveh. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.

2 God is jealous, and Jehovah is an avenger; Jehovah is an avenger, and is a furious master; Jehovah is an avenger to His adversaries, and He bears··a··grudge against His enemies.

3 Jehovah is slow to anger, and of great power; and rendering··innocent He will not render··innocent. Jehovah has His way in the storm and in the tempest, and the clouds are the powdery dust of His feet.

4 He rebukes the sea, and makes it wasted, and dries··up all the rivers; Bashan languishes, and Carmel, and the blossom of Lebanon languishes.

5 The mountains quake before Him, and the hills dissolve, and the earth is burned* before Him, and the world and all who dwell in her.

6 Before His indignation, who can stand? And who can rise··up in the fierceness of His anger? His fury is poured··out as fire, and the rocks are torn··down by Him.

7 Jehovah is good, a stronghold in the day of adversity; and He knows those who have··confidence in Him.

8 But in a surpassing overflow He will make a complete end of its place, and darkness shall pursue His enemies.

9 What do you think toward Jehovah? He will make a complete end; adversity shall not rise··up two··times.

10 For while they be entangled by hooks, and as those inebriated by inebriating··drink, they shall be eaten··up as stubble fully dry.

11 From thee comes··out one who thinks evil against Jehovah, a counselor of Belial.

12 Thus says Jehovah: Though they be at··peace, and thus many, even thus shall they be shorn, and he shall pass··through. And though I have afflicted thee, I will not afflict thee any··more.

13 And now I will break his brace from upon thee, and will pull··off thy bonds.

14 And Jehovah has commanded concerning thee, that no more of thy name be sown; from the house of thy gods I will cut··off the graven image and the molten image; I will set thy grave, for thou art··vile.

15 2:1 Behold, on the mountains the feet of Him who brings· good ·tidings, who makes peace to be heard! Celebrate, Judah, thy celebrations; repay thy vows; for Belial shall not again pass··through thee any··more; he is altogether cut··off.

3022. Verses 3-4 And I will make you swear by Jehovah, the God of heaven and the God of the earth, that you do not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose midst I am dwelling, but that you go to my land and to the place of my nativity; and you shall take a wife for my son Isaac.

'And I will make you swear by Jehovah, the God of heaven and the God of the earth' means an utterly sacred binding to the Divine which existed in highest things and in the things derived from these. 'That you do not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites' means that the Divine Rational should not be joined to any affection incompatible with truth. 'In whose midst I am dwelling' means incompatible things in the maternal human that surround. 'But go to my land and to the place of my nativity' means to the Divine celestial and spiritual things which the Lord acquired to Himself. 'And you shall take a wife for my son Isaac' means that from this came the affection for truth which was to be joined to the affection for good belonging to the Rational.
